Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. (It’s even harder if you’re seeking maternity workwear essentials!) In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

It’s been a couple of years since we last recommended the best maternity pants for the office — so it’s time for another roundup of stylish maternity pants for work! While some days you may find it’s easiest to throw on a comfy but work-appropriate maternity dress, you’ll probably want some variety in your maternity work wardrobe — especially since you might end up wearing some items over and over (and over) — so comfortable maternity pants are key.

What do you think are the most stylish maternity pants for work, readers? Which workwear brands do you wish made maternity clothing? What were your favorite maternity pants for the office?

When You’ll Need Maternity Pants for the Office

It’s important to note that you don’t have to switch to maternity pants as soon as you discover you can’t button your regular pants anymore — you can rely on the age-old rubber-band/hairband trick to keep wearing your pants unbuttoned, or use a Bellaband or similar product.

(Some women may just be able to go up a size or two in regular pants — this heavily depends both on your own body type as well as how you’re carrying the baby, though, so don’t be too surprised if at a certain point you do need maternity pants for the office. There ARE a ton of great pull-on pants for the office, though, which may be more forgiving for a growing belly.)

The Different Types of Office Maternity Pants

Once you’re ready for actual maternity pants, you’ll have two main choices: under-the-belly and over-the-belly styles. You can also find pants with stretchy side panels, but they’re not as common. A lot of it is personal preference — and yours may change as you go through your pregnancy.

(Kat’s written before about her vast preference was for over-the-belly styles, but again, it is personal preference!)

A Closer Look at the Best Maternity Pants for the Office

The Best Affordable Maternity Pants for the Office: Amazon

All maternity pants are pretty affordable, to be honest, but if you’re planning on only having one kid, you REALLY may not want to spend a ton on maternity pants, or maternity clothes, in general.

Amazon seller Tapata gets great reviews, and stands out not only for their affordable prices (around $39 per pant), but the fact that they also come in three different lengths, 28″-32.” Nice.

Other styles at a similar price point include pants at H&M, ASOS Maternity, and the $39 full-panel pixie ankle pants from Old Navy.

The Most Stylish Maternity Pants for the Office: Hatch Maternity

Readers are big fans of Hatch for stylish maternity pants — and they offer a little more variety in styles and colors than many maternity brands, ranging from cashmere joggers to white skinny jeans. The pictured Stiletto Work Pant has a below-the-bump style (with elastic in the back) with both front and back pockets. The pants are machine washable and are made in the U.S.A.

Hatch uses their own, sizing system (updated), but basically covers pre-pregnancy sizes 0-16.

The pants are $198 at Hatch.com as well as spots like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks. And yes, that’s pricier than a lot of maternity pants, but if you’re planning on having more than one child, they’d be a great investment piece for your pregnancy wardrobe.

Other maternity pants that are a bit of a splurge include MARION Maternity (and they have petites!), Nom Maternity, Storq, Isabella Oliver, and Seraphine.

Other trendy, stylish maternity pants at a more affordable price point: Angel Maternity.

The Best Maternity Pants for the Office If You Have Classic Style: Seraphine

These Seraphine pants have often been among some of the Corporette readers’ most-bought products — and it’s easy to see why. A sleek, polished style (love that pintuck detail), plus pockets… yes please.

The pants are available in black and navy for $125; the brand also occasionally offers the pants on Amazon.

The Best Washable Wool Maternity Pants: Lands’ End

Somehow, I never knew that Lands’ End sold maternity clothes until I saw a reader’s comment about it on our previous maternity-pants post. As you might expect, their maternity offerings aren’t the most stylish out there, but they have classic basics like these wool pants, as well as chinos, and they’re very affordable — prices range from $44-$95, but they often go on sale.

Also: Old Navy Pixie Maternity Pants

Readers have recommended Old Navy’s maternity pants, including the maternity version of their best-selling Pixie pants, pictured. The pants have a wide size range of 0–20, as well as several different styles and inseam lengths. The cotton/rayon/spandex blend is machine washable and dryer-safe.

Sister site Gap often has maternity pants as well (in fact, they had some of our favorite maternity trousers for a long time!) but as of 2024 their looks are pretty casual.

Also: Motherhood Maternity Secret Belly Pants

Many readers are fans of Motherhood Maternity’s Secret Fit Belly pants. The pictured straight-leg style is machine washable and sometimes comes in plus sizes.

The pants are also available at Amazon (straight sizes) for under $40.
