Readers, let’s discuss: How do you feel about your OWN screen time? Do you feel like you’re constantly glued to a phone with your kids and setting a bad example? Do you feel like your brain is going to mush because you’re just scrolling social media or playing silly little games? Do tell…
For my $.02: YES and YES. In terms of limiting my own screen time, I’ve just started using our Circle for MYSELF. (We have a first edition, so it’s super old; here’s a link to a newer one; if you have a mesh network like Google WiFi or Orbi, the capabilities may be included; you can read more here.)
But essentially, I set it up to automatically turn off my WiFi at 10:30 p.m. on weeknights on both my phone and my iPad. This cuts down the major things that I’m guilty of binging on at night — TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and the very stupid iPad game Delicious World.
I actually have it set to turn the WiFi back ON at 11:45 p.m, because sometimes in the middle of the night I wake up and need to stress-Google something (am I the only one who does this?) — plus by 11:45 I’m usually asleep or enveloped in my book on Kindle.

In terms of my brain turning to mush, what I’ve started doing is getting audiobooks to listen to; this works well if I’m playing a game or scrolling Instagram. The books I get are generally more erudite than the fun romance books I read (last week I was listening to Rebecca Traister’s Good and Mad (so good!); this week I’m listening to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime), so it feels better. (Podcasts can also be great here; I love NPR’s Throughline and never get a chance to listen to it.)
In terms of setting a bad example to my kids…. can I take a pass on that one? I definitely spend way too much time attached to a screen, as my kids do these days (yay 2020/2021!). We do board games or chess when we can, but at this moment I’m ok with us all unwinding the way we want to until the world is back to normal again. I do have some coloring books and other little crafting projects, which I suppose I should try to do more of.
Readers, how about you — what are your thoughts on screen time for moms? Do you try to limit your own screen time, and if so, how?
