Where to Get Used Maternity Clothes

A woman wearing a maternity suit While we’ve obviously talked a lot about maternity clothing over the years, including the key pieces to buy and the best places to buy them (and even where to rent maternity workwear!), today’s topic is one we haven’t discussed before: where to get used maternity clothes.

Where did/do you buy most of your maternity clothes? Did you buy them new, get them used, or borrow from someone who no longer needed hers? How long were you able to wear your “normal” clothes before you had to switch to maternity?

On the flip side — if you sold your old maternity clothes, where did you sell them?

4 Online Places To Get Used Maternity Clothes

Here are four great online options to buy used maternity clothes…

eBay

You can find an overwhelming amount of used maternity clothing on eBay — some sold in lots where you can buy, for example, several shirts or pants at a great price. There are, uh, search 300,000 results –but fortunately, there are a ton of filters you can use to cut down the number of choices you’re faced with. Besides the obvious things like size, color, and type of item, you can filter by condition (new with tags, new without tags, new with defects, preowned), auction vs. Buy It Now, free shipping, local pickup, free returns, authenticity guarantee, and much more.

Some brands that are plentiful on eBay are A Pea in the Pod, Gap, Ingrid & Isabel, H&M, Old Navy, and Liz Lange for Target. You can find more upscale brands on the site, but in much smaller quantities.

Example item: Gap Maternity three-quarter-sleeve wrap dress (new with tags), $14.95

Isabella Oliver

Considering that it’s a brand that focuses on ethical and sustainable practices, it’s not surprising that Isabella Oliver has a section of their website that sells “pre-loved” clothing (in “good, second-hand condition”). Right now, there’s not a huge selection available, but there’s a nice variety — two dresses, two tops, a coat, a pair of pants, and a pair of jeans. Half of the profits go to charities that support mothers and mothers-to-be.

The company also has a “Pass the Parcel” program that encourages moms to pass along their maternity clothing to a friend — you’l need to fill out a form online and post a pic of the clothing to Instagram with the hashtag #iopasstheparcel (also, nominate someone to do the same), and you’ll receive a $20 gift card to their sister brand, Baukjen.

Example item: Kym Maternity Dress, $57

Poshmark

Poshmark is a great place to find a huge selection of used clothing, including maternity. Poshmark’s search filters are not nearly as thorough as eBay’s, but you can still indicate the basics, and you can also choose “new with tags” if that’s what you’re looking for. The site has a ton of brands available, including Seraphine, Isabella Oliver, Leota, Motherhood Maternity, ASOS Maternity, Gap, H&M, Old Navy, and more. You’re more likely to find more upscale brands here than on eBay.

I’ve never bought maternity wear on Poshmark, but I’ve bought a few other items over the past few years and usually had good luck. (One item smelled very strongly of perfume, but I was able a refund.) Also, I’ve usually been able to make an offer and save a bit of money from the original asking price, so definitely try that! Note that the descriptions are sometimes pretty sparse, but you can post specific questions for sellers on the item pages.

Example item: Seraphine tailored black cropped maternity pants, $60

thredUP

thredUp calls itself “the world’s largest online secondhand shopping destination” — and the maternity section of the site offers more than 8,000 pieces. Some of their main maternity brands are Gap, Old Navy, Motherhood Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, and Liz Lange for Target. I like how thredUP provides more search filters than Poshmark does, including four condition classifications (new with tags, like-new, gently used, signs of wear), material, pattern, and more. You can also sort your results by “recently discounted.”

thredUP also offers an interesting “Goody Boxes” option, which sends you 10 “like new” items that are chosen just for you. It sounds like a used-clothing version of a service like Stitch Fix — you only pay for what you keep, free returns are included for seven days, and the styling fee ($10) is applied to what you buy. (When I was pregnant, I would have loved to have given that a try!)

Example item: A Pea in the Pod long-sleeve button-down shirt (excellent condition), $16.09

Local Spots to Check If You’re Looking to Get Used Maternity Clothes

You may have a maternity or maternity/kids’ thrift store or consignment shop in your area, and this is an especially great option if you know you’ll only be pregnant once and don’t need pieces that will last for a few pregnancies. When I was pregnant, I found a small store that sold maternity clothing and went there often, as needed. The offerings weren’t exactly amazing, but I got many things there that I wore the heck out of.

Also, join local Facebook groups that post maternity clothing for sale (or for free), and check Craigslist, too. Sales put on by local mothers/parents groups (e.g., groups for parents of twins/multiples) can be hit or miss but worth checking out.

While you’re still pregnant, check if your employer has a working mothers/working parents affinity group — their members may have a tradition of passing along big bags of maternity clothing. Score!

You can also find independent thrift and consignment shops online, such as Motherhood Closet, MaternityTraders.com, Bellies to Babies, and Belly Bean. (Note that neither I nor Kat have tried these sites.)

Where are your favorite places to get used maternity clothes? What have been your favorite finds? Have you gotten any hand-me-downs from neighbors, friends, family members, or coworkers? If you SOLD used maternity clothes, where did you had the most luck?

I both bought and sold maternity clothes on Poshmark and found it to be super easy! I also got some hand me downs from our local mom’s group (and then similarly gave away some pieces in that manner)
