Something on your mind? Chat about it here. Tis the season, ladies: time to review every hat, scarf, muffler, glove and mitten you’ve ever bought for anyone in your family because — if you’re me — despite your best efforts to keep things organized (in Ziploc bags of course) they’ve all wound up in a tangled mass at the bottom of the closet. I just did the big hat/glove review for our family, and while I truly, truly don’t need anyMORE hats… this big bright red one just seems so happy. It’s $48 at Nordstrom, but note that there’s a very similar $15 option with a lot of great reviews also. Weekend Slog says
Every weekend feels like a slog through a long chore list at our home. Our kids (4 and 6) are happy to play in their playroom while my husband and I do our “chores,” or run errands with us. We have recently tried to add something “fun” into each weekend, but it doesn’t always happen. We have a cleaner come every week, but between laundry, errands, cooking for the week and trying to squeeze in a run, the weekends feel equally exhausting, if not more so, than the week. Any commiseration or suggestions?

Commiseration! DH helps me out a lot, but the weekend can easily get eaten up by chores. One thing that really helps us is being diligent about chores during the week – esp laundry and floor cleaning. We also commit to doing one fun thing each weekend, whether the chores get done or not.

Weekends are such a slog. I love them, and I’m always looking forward to them, but by the time Sunday night rolls around I’m frustrated because I never feel refreshed. I think this is the hardest thing about being a parent.
We’ve tried to simplify and focus on one or two big things each weekend day. We do laundry throughout the week, typically, so that’s not a thing for us. I don’t know the answer, though. Hopefully as the kids get older they can help more, and then otherwise it’s just cutting out the things you don’t really need to do and being okay with that. Oh – and building in a lazy half-day (like, this Sunday morning, we’re all going to hang out around the house in our pajamas with NO obligations) every few weeks. Or maybe just once a month.

I gave up on cooking for the week on the weekends. It takes up *so* much time. Now I rely more on quick meals (pasta, burritos), pre-made meals like the casseroles from Fresh Direct, and meal delivery services (NOT meal kits, but pre-made meals). I feel guilty about the environmental impact of all the packing materials, but this has really reduced my stress and freed up time for me to exercise, volunteer, and do more family activities so I’m OK with the trade-off for now.

My husband works on Saturday mornings, so we make a huge effort to have family time without chores on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. It makes a huge difference in how we feel about the weekend.

Total commiseration. Our weekends are broken up into blocks of exercise (yay!), errands, laundry, grocery shopping, food prep, etc. It’s basically a slog about 80% of the time.
Laundry on Friday night or Saturday night (when we’re most likely just sitting around anyway) helps remove that from the list of daytime chores that need to happen.

Laundry service! Started doing it a couple of months ago and it has been life changing. They pick up dirty clothes, launder and fold them, and return them 24 hours later. Best $60 a week spent for us. We use Rinse but there are many competitors out there. We don’t have laundry in unit so doing this has saved us numerous hours.

Like the other commenters I try to shift laundry to the workweek. I try to do one load a day Weds-Fri, which usually takes care of me and the kiddo (and sometimes the towels). Hubs does his own laundry. I’ve also streamlined dinner like TTC vent above. I love to cook but have other things I want/need to be doing with the time. If I do cook I like to make sure we can get a couple of meals out of it (like freezing half or making a new, easy dish with the leftovers).

I just got fitted for a pair of custom orthotics because my bunions are finally causing problems. Any suggestions for cute, supportive shoes that have a wide/wider toe box? Or cute/comfortable shoes that are available in wide sizes? Arch support is great, but if I can fit my orthotics or slim fit orthotics I’ll manage. I’m okay with wearing flats, I’m not okay with limiting myself to sneakers. Thanks!

Try the website Barking Dog Shoes (Dot) Com – they recommend shoes for “problem” feet and usually have a link to all their categories for orthotic-friendly/bunion friendly shoes.
