This is the kind of maternity dress that does about ten things. Add a cardigan or blazer and subdued jewelry and shoes, and wear it to work. Add sandals and a wrap and wear it on a vacation. Add a sparkly necklace and some killer heels and wear it on date night. I like the high V here, and something about the wrap looks particularly flattering. It’s $128 at Nordstrom, and also comes in two prints. Tart Maternity ‘Valentia’ Twist Front Maternity Dress Building a maternity wardrobe for work? OK, we are going to potty train our almost three year old boy this weekend. Planning a trip to Target on Friday so he can pick out a little chair and some underwear and M&Ms.
Best tips? Tricks? Really dreading this…

The toilet seat with the flip-down insert worked much better for us than the potty chair. We ordered one from One Step Ahead, but I am pretty sure that Home Depot now carries them alongside the regular toilet seats. A stepstool is very helpful if you choose to go this route.
We put pull-ups over the underwear while training to reduce the mess while allowing kiddo to feel the wetness. We separated day and night training and didn’t bother to try night training until she was regularly waking up with dry pull-ups, which was maybe a year after she was trained during the day.
Good luck!
Edna Mazur says
Ooh I’ll have to look into the insert and pick up some pull-ups. We already have the stool for brushing teeth and hand washing. He doesn’t ever wake up dry so we are definitely not going to try night training until he shows signs of being physically ready there. Thanks for the tips.
avocado says
You can use diapers over the underwear too if that’s what you have on hand–they might even fit better than the pull-ups.

With my boy, I left him naked and when he started to pee I freaked out and put him on the big toilet. It actually worked out, because he found the sound of the pee hitting the water to be so hilarious that he was potty trained from then on. Took a bit longer to work out the nighttime stuff, but day time was a breeze. Of course this was almost 100% luck, I am under no illusions that I’m some potty training genius and that if everyone only tried this it would work or anything.
Boys are so weird.
Betty says
Boys are strange creatures. Along this line: teach him to sit first. Teaching standing is much easier in the summer when you can teach them to pee on a tree (provided you don’t live in a city or have some type of private outdoor space).

We did the no clothes method over Christmas break. My 3 yo was so ready for the peeing and it really took no effort on our part. We did a sticker chart that got progressively harder to get a prize and we loaded him with juice, which he never otherwise gets. He had lots of opportunities the first day, which led to a lot of successes. We went for a short trip out on day two and I was so super stressed about him peeing on everything. He didn’t.
We’re still working on poop though, right now we get a fun surprise in his underwear every 1-2 morning. Not sure what to do about that . . . I just wish potty training could magically happen overnight, but at 3 years 3 months I figure we couldn’t wait any longer. We will see how his first day of daycare goes today.
anon says
We tried at 3 and had tons of accidents, especially poop accidents, and gave up and tried again at 3.5, when it was 100% better. He night trained himself around 4, no problems. You CAN wait longer, really, if daycare is on board.

This dress looks great. I’m not pregnant but if I was I’d totally be checking it out! Like Kat said, seems very versatile (in my imagination where it’s always warm and sunny, at least).
Need encouragement from the hive says
Looking for encouragement, ladies.
I want to say that I recognize there are people out there with actual fertility struggles, and I am in no way comparing my feelings to the emotional turmoil they are going through.
However, I got pregnant with my first unintentionally when I was in my very early 20s and on the pill. I elected to keep the pregnancy, but it was of course a bit of a rough road, because duh. Fast forward 7 years and I’m married to a wonderful man, have a great job, am financially and emotionally stable and ready to do this again! I assumed it would be easy, hey I got pregnant without trying the first time! It will of course happen when I do it on purpose! I “timed” the trying “perfectly” with how our leave system works, thought I was such a genius who had it all under control! Now we’re on month 4 of trying and it feels like the universe is teasing me. I know that’s not that long to try and it’s perfectly normal, I just had admittedly unrealistic expectations going in to this. It seems a bit unfair that my body won’t cooperate when I’m with someone who really deserves to father a child. blargh. Not to mention I’m quite the planner and the 2WW is practically unbearable. Any tips or encouragement?
H says
Four months really isn’t that long. And pregnancy really isn’t something you can plan since it isn’t an exact science. It is a bit frustrating because you’re looking forward in your life, but I say just keep trying and keep living.
anon says
I think i read somewhere that even if everything is timed perfectly right and working perfectly well, you only have a 1 in 4 or 5 chance of getting pregnant. (This is foggy memories, not hard science, so take this with a grain of salt – or better, do some googling). I think I got pregnant on month 4 of trying. It was hard to wait, but it only has to work once. And as a mother, you should know by now that babies love nothing more than foiling our best laid plans! ;) Good luck.

Birthday gift suggestions for a 4 year-old girl? My daughter’s birthday next week and being so close to Christmas, I am plum out of ideas. She mentioned wanting a baby doll, of which she has a few, but I’m looking into a Bitty Baby. Is it worth the $? So pricey for a baby doll!
Pogo says
My 3yo niece loves her Bitty Baby, but the in-laws bought it for her so money is no concern (lol). I dont think you have to buy the branded clothes for it – you can find knock-offs that still fit the size. Same for getting a little crib, high chair, whatever.
It was very sweet to see her get all her dolls swaddled in her old blankets and put down to “nap”. She was pretending to be the teacher in the baby room at school! So cute.

Magnatiles, lincoln logs, or duplos?
anon says
My 4 year old son is super into trains but the Magnatiles seem popular with both genders. Several 4 year olds girls I know apparently got Fashion Plates for Christmas, which I remember fondly from my own childhood. Dress-up clothes, Spirograph, Board games (Zingo, SpotIt Jr, Busytown), doll accessories… Corelle makes nice baby dolls, maybe not much cheaper than Bitty though.
Spirograph says
Yes, Spirographs are great. :)
+1 to Magnatiles being popular with everyone, but it’s surprisingly expensive to buy enough to build anything beyond the super-basic. Another thing that has been a big hit with both genders is kinetic sand. It really is easy to clean up (we only have flat rugs, I don’t know about thick pile carpet). We got a pack of little molds to build castles and cities, and just dump it in a low, wide storage bin to play.
anon says
We actually got PlayMags from Amazon – they seem just as good.
AnonMN says
We got a huge set (100pc) of magna tiles for Christmas and it has been a huge hit.

My husband had a vasectomy yesterday. Not having another child is the right decision for our family, and I know that and supported the decision. But, I have to admit that I am a bit heartbroken. Since before our first, I always thought I wanted three children. My husband and son have had massive health issues in the last year that will majorly impact our lives going forward. Intellectually I know this was the right decision, but part of me feels sad and teary. Ugh. Happy New Year?
Anonymous says
… and this is why my husband hasn’t gotten snipped yet. I just can’t, emotionally, at the moment. Hugs to you — everyone I know who has done this (or whose partner has) was ultimately very happy with their decision, but it sounds like the instant buyer’s remorse is very common, like it is with every Big Decision that is Very Final.

Any suggestions on books for dealing with discipline for 4-5yr olds? My husband and I have different styles, and I think he’s harsher/expects more than is developmentally appropriate for our son at times. I have more of a background in childcare than he does, but he still expects me to always ‘back him up’ – and I don’t always think his approach is correct.
I think reading/discussing the book and our approach to discipline together would be very helpful for us both – especially any advice for avoiding power struggles/de-escalation techniques.
Sarabeth says
This is geared for a wider range of ages, but I like “No Drama Discipline,” and I think it would be a good fit for your situation. The author emphasizes turning power struggles into learning opportunities and prioritizing connection over confrontation.
Betty says
My favorite book is “How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk.” Its available via audible/audiobook.
