News update - boisterous boysSome of the articles of interest to working mothers that we’ve seen around the web recently…

  • In the NYT’s Motherlode blog, Lynn Messina wonders about the effects of the “boys will be boys” mindset — i.e., boys are wild, boisterous, etc. — on our daughters.
  • After our discussion of vanity after kids on Wednesday, it was interesting to read Already Pretty’s post on why caring about your appearance is valuable to self-care.
  • Working Mother tells you how to eke out some flex time — even in a corporate gig.
  • Bloomberg Businessweek tells us how to regain the hours of 9-11 p.m. for ourselves (and stop working in the evenings).
  • If anyone reading is in the “caregiving daughter” stage of your parents’ lives, Hello Ladies’ list of what to bring with you may be helpful.
  • I never thought I’d heard Julia Roberts recommend a crockpot, and yet… she and other celebrity moms have some great advice for new mom Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today Show (and Kat’s old writing teacher at Georgetown University Law Center).

  1. Interesting Take says

I thought it was interesting that the Motherlode author took away from the situation that the behavior of her sons was something that should be held up as ideal for both genders, rather than the behavior of the girls. It’s always weird to me when the typically accepted stereotypically male behavior is idealized automatically. Maybe her boys need to be held to the standard that they can be quiet and self controlled too? Rather than expecting that girls need to be more boisterous?

I guess its because I went into the article expecting the author to criticize “boys will be boys”, considering how many awful behaviors that mindset has been used to excuse.

That is a great point. I think it’s the same reason that it’s a lot more socially acceptable for girls to wear “boy” clothes than for boys to wear “girl” clothes – a general societal preference for maleness.
