I realize I am not yet OUT of the diaper bag years (Harry is almost 9 months) — but it feels a bit silly to purchase MORE diaper bags at this point. Yet, gosh, this one is cute. I love that lightweight LeSportsac nylon, the lovely print, the nice big size. Ladies, how many diaper bags is TOO many diaper bags? This one is part of the Nordstrom clearance sale — was $138, now $92. LeSportsac ‘Ryan’ Baby Bag (Psst: 6pm has other colors on sale if you’re not feeling the stripe, priced $76-$104. Nordstrom has the camo print on sale here, as well.)Sales of note for 9.10.24

I guess it depends on how many bags you have already. I carried a textured leather Coach bag for the first 6 or so months. Once we started doing a lot more activities where the bag would need to go on the ground or be left with stroller parking, we switched to a less conspicuous, more durable nylon messenger style (SkipHop I think). For the last year or so before he was potty trained, we just used a small backpack that he could carry and had a nylon dopp kit pouch for a couple of diapers and a small pack of wipes. Diaper bags take a lot of abuse.

Am I a terrible person if I leave our apartment while my husband sleep trains our ten month old? I just don’t want to do it, and I don’t think I can bear it. I also don’t want to give in in the middle, because I know that is just cruel to the little guy. I really just want to go to my moms, get a good night of sleep, and pretend it isn’t happening.
Meg Murry says
My husband sent me away when he started with sleep training, because otherwise I was just sitting in the living room with tears running down my face because I couldn’t go to my baby who was crying. Not a terrible person, if your husband is ok with it.
Lyssa says
Definitely not a terrible person, but you should probably makes sure that he gets a night or so off, too (unless there’s a real reason not to of some sort).
JMDS says
Yea, I’m just planning (maybe) one night away. I’m sure I will cave and end up staying, but like to dream about a full nights sleep in my parents cozy guest bed, and that this 9 month sleep regression never happened.

Were you here yesterday? We were all telling 1 mom to make her husband do it.
You’ll be fine, kid’ll be fine, husband’ll be fine.

I never used a diaper bag. I have a backpack that I shove things into for long trips and for short trips I usually just take the diaper changing thing, a bottle, and a food pouch (and sometimes I don’t even take the last two things). Am I missing something?

I am looking to finally get replacement for my 10-year old Longchamp Le Pliage bag (RIP – the zipper finally got stuck and there are some hole issues in the bottom corners that I lovingly ignored for a while). This bag was a total catchall – for work, for travel, for shopping, etc. But I noticed that the straps on the current large Le Pliage bags appear to be shorter (9″) than mine (maybe 12″?). Am I going crazy? Was there a change? Is there a different model I should be looking at? Halp!
JJ says
Not sure about the changes to the Longchamp bag, but I carried a Tumi Quintessential Tote everyday for work, shopping, travel, etc. for over 8 years before it finally bit the dust. I loved it, and they go on sale on Ruelala and Haute Look all the time.
bc says
there are two didferent handle lengths on the le pliage.
Tunnel says
Are you talking about the obvious different between the short handle (4″ drop) and the long handle (9″ drop), or are you saying that there are two different long handle lengths?

FYI – Longchamp will repair their bag for free.

Wondering at what point solid foods start to replace some amount of formula/bm in babys diet? My baby’s five months, and been doing great with oatmeal for about ten days now, so we’re going to try sweet potatoes this weekend. I’m not sure if that means we should do less milk or if that doesn’t happen until they are eating more than a tablespoon at a time. Any other advice for starting solids?
CHJ says
It took a long time for my son to start eating enough solids that it replaced his milk intake. Maybe around 9-10 months? In the meantime, we just had him try a new food every 2-3 days and kept cycling through the foods he had already tried. Sometimes he would eat a lot and sometimes he wouldn’t, so we didn’t stress it and kept giving him the same amount of milk. If you’re doing bottles, you’ll gradually see that s/he starts taking less milk, but I wouldn’t worry about decreasing it intentionally before then.
Also, I highly recommend the website Wholesome Baby Food for all sorts of info about starting solids. They are focused on making your own baby food, but they have lots of useful information and charts about how to ramp up on solids.

Thanks to all. Great website!

It comes much closer to a year. I also like the “Food Fights” book by Drs. Jana and Shu for all sorts of practical tips on feeding wee ones.
pockets says
My baby is a year old, eats 3 meals a day, and still drinks the same amount of milk she drank when we started solids. I read somewhere that solids don’t really replace milk at this age and a baby drinking less milk (i.e., replacing milk with solids) is actually a cause for concern.
Liz says
We started solids at 7 mo with our daughter who is now 8 mo. It seems like she is finally starting to eat some of what she is getting in her mouth ( doing a combination of blw and purees). I had heard at LLL meetings that 90% of calories should still come from BM till 1 yr. But when will she need less milk?? I would love to drop a pumping session bt 1 yr. Pumping is taking so much time and I feel like its impacting my abilitly to participate fully in all day meetings and its such a hassle to deal with when I am working outside of the office.
Meg Murry says
It totally varies from kid to kid as to how they take to solids. Start asking your daycare/nanny if she is actually finishing bottles or if she needs to be encouraged to drink so she doesn’t waste it.
Also, no shame if you start adding 1 formula bottle a day or even all formula at daycare – I found combo feeding and dropping my reliance on the pump made b-feeding so much more pleasant for me because it took the stress off, and we were able to continue nursing until 15 months.
POSITA says
My daughter’s milk consumption peaked at about 25 ounces of pumped milk per work day around 7 months and then decreased to about 9 ounces of pumped milk at 1 year. She still nursed morning, night and weekends. She had no interest in her bottle so she was happy to eat food instead of get a bottle. (She always always hated it but begrudgingly gave in around 4 months when I went back to work). We just followed her lead and it was a pretty natural transition. We gave up trying to give her a bottle at 1 year and started giving sippy of whole milk a few times a day.
I think there is a pretty bit range for this transition. The other baby in her nanny share took a lot longer to give up his bottle (he might still get it at bedtime at 18 months; I’m not sure). He drank more milk longer because he was eating less food. He was more attached to the bottle for comfort reasons, much pickier about food and had more trouble with the motor skills of feeding himself, chewing and swallowing. I think all you can do is to make it fun and follow their lead. It will happen eventually.

I’m so glad it is Friday. I’m 10 weeks now, exhausted, nauseous, constipated, and miserable. I left work at 4pm yesterday because I was so weak I couldn’t think. I’m usually better in the morning, but today I got here at 7:30, took my zofran, and promptly threw up at 8. I can’t leave early today, too many meetings, but I can probably get out by about 3 or 4. Ugh. I just can’t.
JMDS says
Have you tried taking the zofran at night? I took reglan with my first pregnancy, and while it wasn’t a cure all, i found that taking it at bedtime would really help with the morning morning sickness, which meant that i could eat and drink throughout the day and would have some energy from that.
Keep in mind, the reglan made me so tired I could ONLY take it at night, but just a thought.
PregAnon says
Not a bad idea. This is the first morning I’ve had morning sickness in the morning – usually I’m ok until about 11 (I know, weird). Today I think it is just the end of the week, I’m tired, my co-worker is irritating the crap out of me, and I want to go to bed…and all of those things added up to me running to the bathroom! That is a really good idea though, I’ll try that tonight.
JMDS says
Good luck and feel better!!!

I took the Zofran with food and the other meds – the prenatal vitamin, DHA, anything else…

The constipation was no joke and didn’t help my general malaise. On the advice of my OB, I took a couple of Colace nightly with my prenatal basically the entire pregnancy.

I only have one diaper bag, and it is this one! I like it, although I wish it had an extra internal pocket or two — maybe one that zips or otherwise closes.
