I love the more subdued, textured patterns and colors that LeSportsac is coming out with lately. Take, for example, this Everygirl tote, made out of their classic nylon. At 12.25″ x 7″ x 12″, it isn’t huge but strikes me as plenty big for all of your stuff and — in early days, at least — for use as a diaper bag, one that your partner would be happy to grab. (Am I the only one whose baby diaper bag was miniscule but toddler diaper bag is huge? Also, do you guys have any interest in seeing what’s IN my diaper bag?) The tote also comes in a nice navy nylon with a floral texture, as well as about 7 other colors, from $82 to $102. (6PM has a few more colors, included a muted gray with a floral texture, for $71.) There are baby diaper bags and toddler diaper bags? I just thought that there were diaper bags.
We have a toddler, and I was thinking of trying to find some sort of tiny diaper bag, just with emergency supplies (a diaper, wipes, a changing pad, a couple of snacks) – like the baby equivalent of a wristlet – so that we could just leave the big general one in the car when we’re out and about. We rarely need it, and usually go back to the car anyway to change diapers if possible (changing in the back of an SUV is easier than in a public restroom). I guess I could just use a purse, but I’d like it to be something that my husband could carry, too.

When we got to the toddler stage, we used a kids backpack with a change of clothes, snacks, and diaper changing stuff. For diapers, I used either a diapees& wipees pouch or a small dopp kit. We generally just left those in the car along with the changing pad.

We use this for a baby wristlet, and it works very well. http://www.amazon.com/Skip-Hop-Changing-Station-Chevron/dp/B00B7XUVOE/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1411742796&sr=1-1&keywords=skip+hop+changing+station

We have one of those, too. We keep it on the bottom of a small shelf right next to our front door, so we can grab it to throw in the stroller or car on our way out – it’s so much smaller and easier than a diaper bag. Mine has a big velcro closure, and is a little bit expandable, so I can fold an extra set of clothes into it, and I use the buckle strap to attach it to my purse handle if I’m carrying a smaller purse.
For our actual diaper bag, we have a very diaper bag-looking one. I used it more frequently when LO was younger, but then I realized he doesn’t need as much stuff as I think he does (I was BF, so no bottles, and he sucks his thumb, so no pacifiers. A couple extra tiny onesies and a burp cloth were just as easy to shove in my purse). If we’re going to be out for a whole day, or if we’re traveling, I swap the contents of my purse into it and pack more snacks, a sippy cup, more clothes, etc etc… but for errands or quick trips out, it’s more bother than it’s worth to me. Although I’ll probably take it back out again when I have 2 kids worth of stuff to schlep.
Both our cars have a couple diapers, a pack of wipes, and a change of clothes tucked in a seat pocket, just in case we’re forgetful. Learned that one the hard way, of course. Now that I think of it, we should swap out the clothes for warmer ones since summer is slipping away…

I just saw a good review of the Elari Diaper Wallet, which sounds like it might be what you wants.

Kat, I’d be interested in what’s in your diaper bag (infant and toddler). Our bag is huge, and I would love to downsize. I’d also be interested in which bags people love. We got a highly rated Skip Hop one, but I’m kind of eh about it…or maybe I’m just not organizing it in the best way?
JJ says
Ohhh good idea. I started with a (gifted) Marc Jacobs bag that was huge, but I liked it. It was just too big for every day use and so we use it when we travel. I then used a Skip Hop bag for a long time (the Versa), which I thought was perfect for one toddler. My mother-in-law gifted me a grey, patent leather Coach baby tote bag that is covered in the embossed Coach symbol. It’s completely not my style (and the interior isn’t all that useful), but I use it on occassion to keep the MIL happy.
Once we had two under two years old, I started using a StorkSak Olivia in Champagne. It’s been perfect now that the baby is a year old. I can throw a bottle in the side pockets, and there are plenty of interior pockets to keep things organized. It gets a little tight if I have a change of clothes in there for the kids, but otherwise it’s been great. My only complaint (and something that I should have seen coming) is that the champagne colored nylon is really starting to show some wear and tear.

I’d be interested in how the “two under two” diaper bag works – we are quickly approaching that scenario, and seeing how stuffed (and nearly worn out) the current bag is, I’m very open to what will work good for families that are nearly always on the go!
The cheapest thing that works will work for me – I’m a lover of LLBean, anything backpack-style.

We were 2 under 3, but our oldest wasn’t PT’d yet so the diaper bag probably looked the same as for a 2u2 family. It was basically the same as when we had one baby with the addition of 1-2 snacks, a small waterbottle/sippy, an extra change of clothes, and 1-2 larger diapers.
We didn’t need a bigger bag because in generally we were more efficient in packing by then. For example, I didn’t carry around the f’ing nursing cover. By then I didn’t use one in the majority of circumstances and in the odd situation that I did want one, I used the muslin blanket that also functioned as a carseat/stroller cover.

Our diaper bag was actually a give-away from the hospital for giving birth there, lol. It’s surprisingly perfect (we liked it better than the one we bought), and we see lots of other families in the area using it too. What I like about it specifically (aside from the general wipeable and internal pockets requirements):
– adjustable strap (husband likes crossbody, I like shoulder, and we’re not the same height anyway)
– zippered top without flap
– external bottle pockets on both sides (easy access, one for each kid)
– brown, so completely husband-friendly. My husband’s not all manly-manly, but even he hated carrying the cream and green one that I bought (thinking it was neutral…)

I’ve loved the Lug Tuk Tuk – expecting twins though and wondering if it will be big enough – any moms of multiples who can comment on how much extra stuff you need for two vs. one infant? I was thinking that double the stuff is probably a bit much?
Msj says
I’ve never had just one so don’t know how it compares but now we are using a Northface backpack for our infant twins. I also have the OG bag if I need something more sophisticated, but in general prefer the backpack because it can also be used when baby wearing .
I am bfeeding (so no bottles, although I occasionally throw in a bottle of formula for emergencies) and cloth diapers (so more bulky).
TwinsMOM says
I have 14 month old twins and we do seem to pack twice as much stuff – you never know when both babies are going to have a blow out, or need new outfits, or get hungry/thirsty. I think the only thing that you get an economy of scale on is diaper cream! We use the Skip Hop Bento for everyday around town and the Ju Ju Be Prepared for longer outings/travel. The Lug Tuk Tuk looks like it should work!
Nonny says
We should have a “show your diaper bag” day – we could send photos of our diaper bag contents to Kat in advance, she could put them up as a post, and we could get ideas from one another.
Gosh, this sounds nerdy. But I think it would be fun.

Can someone recommend a picture book blog or list? Building up some books (kindle) to take with 12 month old on a trip. Could use your favourite titles too. :)
Barn says
I’d check Amazon — I’m sure people have made lists about this!
I don’t know whether all of these have Kindle editions, but here are my son’s (17 month) current favorites:
The Big Red Barn (I actually hate this book, but he loves it, and I’ve read it about 3x a day for months.)
Jamberry
1 2 3 Go! (Fisher Price)
Little Blue Truck
Never Tease a Weasel
Green Eggs and Ham
One Fish Two Fish
We have a few about animals, and they are all big hits.

At that age we did better with physical books, the ones that have things you can touch and feel. Tails (and the related books), If I were a ____, Peek a Who, etc. My kids also really loved books with pictures in it, so I would order little photobooks with pictures of family members (and themselves) – they loved that.
DD also really likes it when I read any of the Piggie and Elephant or the pigeon books to her brothers, probably because I make all kinds of weird faces when I do. Anything by Mo Willems is a hit in our house.
