I was intrigued on Monday when, in our discussion of everyone’s favorite online shopping sites, Boden got a number of shoutouts — I’ve admired their clothes a bunch but have yet to pull the trigger. They’re a frequent source for Washable Wednesday, though, so I may just have to. This Ravello top comes in a number of fun prints and bright colors, and looks like it has an easy fit — and it’s machine washable. It was $78, but is now marked to $39-$62 at Boden. I’m wearing this top today! I have 8 of them. They fit great and I have a hard time finding tops that fit well.
KJ says
I have 6 of them! I find the cut to be great for hiding a tummy.
CapHillAnon says
I’ve got a few myself, and just bought another one yesterday with the 20% off and free shipping code that Diana Barry posted a few days ago: 3G7X
Pigpen's Mama says
What do y’all recommend for sizing? I’m generally a Large post-baby in Ann Taylor, BR etc, but they can run just a little big at times (and small at other times, because sizing is FUN like that).
Broad shoulders and a 36/38 small C cup.
anne-on says
I’d probably go with a 8-10? I find their clothes to be most hit or miss in the arm/shoulder area. If you lift weights or have larger arms definitely size up. Plus the online reviews are fabulous, almost every review I’ve read is great about highlighting a weird fit or fabric issue.
KJ says
I have broad shoulders and wear a 40F bra, an XL in most brands. I wear a 14 Ravello top.
I got one a few years ago that was the same size as my others but noticeably much larger – I ended up wearing it as a maternity top. I think their sizing has gotten more consistent over the last couple of years though, and I haven’t had that problem again.
Anonymous says
Thanks! Went with a 10! And a few other things for me and the wee little Pigpen made their way into my shopping cart.
Let’s just hope we can get a few wearings out of them before they get permanently stained with some mysterious orange substance!
DC Mom says
Can anyone recommend books on how to raise a toddler?
I read Brain Rules when I was pregnant and loved it! (recommended here)
Two Cents says
This top has such great reviews overall but I also read that the top is a little boxy and not fitted. I look best in fitted tops. Anyone care to comment?
CT says
I ordered the Ravello top but sent it back for just that reason. I’m shorter with hourglass figure so the boxy-ness of the shirt just wasn’t flattering.
HSAL says
Had my 28 week appointment today with the glucose screening, rhogam shot, and a TDAP booster. I’m incredibly proud that there were no tears! (I sobbed during my first pregnancy blood draw – intense needle fear). Wish me luck on not needing the three hour glucose tolerance test!
Maternity Sizing says
Anyone have tips for maternity sizing? Is it different than regular sizing? I’ve considered buying some items online but have no idea what size I am. I used to wear a small top, but not sure if that would still be the case with the larger chest and stomach.
Clementine says
It varies from brand to brand, but in general if you wore a small you should probably start by trying on a small. For reference, I’m tall and wore a 6 or 8 in dresses pre-preg, an 8 in pants and usually a small or a medium in tops/sweaters. I’m about halfway through and my chest has gotten significantly larger (like p*rn star larger).
I’ve found that A Pea in the Pod runs small- mediums there tend to be tight on me.
Seraphine runs TTS- I bought an 8/medium in dresses just to make sure it fit all the way through pregnancy and it’s great.
Isabella Oliver- The dress i got in I purposefully ordered in a size up to make a body con dress more work appropriate- I got a 4 and probably would have fit into a 3 just fine.
Motherhood runs generous- I expect mediums (which are loose right now) will fit me for a long while.
Gap and Old Navy tops and dresses seem to run large (I got Mediums, probably should have gotten smalls), but their pants run TTS.
Good luck!
CapHillAnon says
I look better in fitted tops too, and Ravello works well for me. I tuck it in, and it has a nice drape. I don’t find it too boxy, but YMMV. As CT noted, it probably works less well for shorter torsos / hourglasses–but it seems pretty universal. There are a few people in my office with very different shapes who rock it.
CapHillAnon says
This was meant to be for Two Cents and CT’s conversation about the Ravello top.
CT says
And just to add on to CapHillAnon’s comment – Boden makes returns pretty easy so it doesn’t hurt to try for yourself. It’s hard to find nicer-material shirts that are washable and have flattering sleeves — my search still continues but I’d have bought one in every color had it worked out!
anne-on says
And not that I needed to spend more money on shoes, but Boden had some incredibly cute loafers, flats, and mid-heeled pumps. I ordered a few for fall that I’m hoping work for my increasingly crabby feet!

Potentially flame-y question: Do you leave your toddler home alone during his nap or bedtime?
I’m talking like 15 minutes to go on a jog or something, or walk around the neighborhood on a phone call? My gut reaction is NO! what if there’s a fire/ break-in/ something happens to me while I’m out! But my other insanely busy working mom who can’t figure out when else to go for said jog is like, stop living your life in fear and get out of the house because staying inside is making you crazy thinking of all the things you can’t do while he sleeps.
So, do you? Would you? Within certain parameters? NEVER?!
hoola hoopa says
Never. Never ever.
I’ll roam as far as the baby monitor will go, which is basically pulling weeds in the yard.
CHJ says
I agree with hoola hoopa – never ever ever. I’ll walk my dog as far as the baby monitor will reach, which is the end of our driveway.
Can your partner/grandma/babysitter watch the monitor while you go for a run? It sounds like you’re going stir crazy and just want to go running on a lovely day, and I can understand that completely!
Chronic Overachiever says
My son is almost a year. I have left him sleeping in his crib many times to take the dog outside. My yard is not fenced, so I take my leashed dog outside and walk around the yard. I will sometimes cross the street to speak to my neighbor if she is tending to her garden, but I do not let my house out of sight.
Recently, I have sat on my porch or lounged in my backyard when my son was napping on weekends. I would not walk around the block or go for a jog, but maybe you could exercise in your yard?
Chronic Overachiever says
I just want to add…yes I have my baby monitor with me!
Maddie Ross says
I definitely sit outside on my back porch with my husband and drink wine, run to the mailbox at the end of our driveway, and sometimes weed the flower beds while my daughter is asleep inside at night or during nap. I would never leave my actual property though. When she was little, while I was on maternity leave, our driveway is super long and I constantly fight myself about going to get the mail while she slept. Ultimately, I had to let go and be ok with being out of the house for 2 minutes (which frankly was less time than I would be in the shower or using the potty).
FPP says
I think it’s fine logically (baby sleeps great and is confined to her crib, and we live in a doorman building), but I can’t get myself to do it. Would love to run across the street to get coffee, and I don’t think it’s evil, and yet….
OCAssociate says
This is one of those things where I think objectively it’s fine, but can’t bring myself to actually do it. Especially since husband remembers his mom visiting neighbors while he was napping as a kid – he’d wake up and be alone and scared.
Do you have the baby monitor app on your phone? You just leave a phone/ipad, etc. in the room with the kid, and set it to call your phone when there’s noise. That would make it easier to go on a short walk – you’d know if you needed to race home.
KJ says
I go out and do yardwork while the baby is sleeping, but not out of the range of the monitor. When I want to exercise, I do videos or jog on a treadmill in the basement.
fff says
Many states would likely make this illegal. We go in the yard with a monitor, but don’t leave our own property.
Pigpen's Mama says
We (husband and I) will walk around the cul-de-sac we live in after baby has gone to bed. The cul-de-sac is effectively the size of a small block, but you can see our door the whole time. We take the monitor with us, but it does cut out for about half the walk, so we’re out of range for a few minutes and out of the house for only 20. Also, our neighborhood is usually reasonably active at that time, so there is almost always at least one other person out and about.
I wouldn’t go out of eyesight of our house, nor would I do anything where I could get hurt/delayed.
We may also not do it when she’s older and would notice we were gone if she woke up and could get out of bed or call out to us — right now we wait a few minutes if she’s fussing even if we’re home before deciding if we need to go settler her, so I don’t think she’d even know we were gone if she did wake up.
NewMomAnon says
I live in an apartment building and I’ve gone to my mailbox or down to the parking garage (both out of range of the monitor) while kiddo is sleeping at night. Both of those trips are 5-7 minute max, and I let her try to self-settle for 10 minutes if she wakes up at night, so she wouldn’t have any reason to know that I was gone if she wakes up. But I’ve decided I can’t get a dog in part because I would feel uncomfortable leaving her alone while I take the dog out for a night time potty break. That will just have to wait until we have a house with a fenced yard or walk out.
But yeah – I would definitely not feel comfortable leaving the house to go jogging while kiddo sleeps. But I know the feeling – it’s such a waste to have to sit around NOT INTERACTING with the kiddo but not able to go anywhere. Can you pay a neighbor kid just to sit around for an hour and watch TV while you go running? Easiest babysitting gig ever.
TK says
Haven’t, but have been tempted. It’s been 5 months since the guy woke up at night after being put to bed – what are the chances that the ONE TIME he decides to wake up / learns how to climb out of the crib / figures out how the undo the baby gate at the top of the stairs and plunge to his death be the time that I’m out of the house for 10 minutes? Pretty slim. But still no, haven’t.
anne-on says
The furthest away I’ve ever gone without the monitor was downstairs to get a package from our front desk when we lived in an apartment and I was terrified (for no good reason of course) the whole time. I can see going out in the yard or walking your dog in a yard with a monitor, but jogging without one would make me too nervous.
Samantha says
I had an old version of the Ravello top (from 2 years ago) and my one complaint is that it needed ironing if you tossed it in the wash. Anyone care to comment on the current Ravello?
MJ says
Yes, it wrinkles quite a bit after washing. I still like it though.
