my mid-elementary aged kids were excited to find out that they are getting another cousin, but my SIL is terminating her pregnancy due to fetal complications. what is the best way to explain this to a kid? we don’t live near their aunt, but will be seeing her soon at a large/public family event, so also how do I make sure they don’t say the wrong thing?

Last night DS was playing around with DH and DS said, “You sound like Jack!” I asked who Jack was and he said he is a kid in his Kindergarten class who “doesn’t know how to talk,” so he makes grunting sounds. We didn’t know how to address it in the moment but I want to talk to him and let him know it’s not ok to make fun of people who have disabilities, whether to their face or behind their back. How do I communicate this to a six-year old?

Are your school-aged kids required to take home their school laptop to charge on a daily basis? What grades? Public or private school?

coming off the reading comment below (and congrats to your son!), my 10YO has never been a strong reader, does fine, but doesn’t like it. I really can’t get him to read other than what is required for school. I’ve tried all different types of books. He seems to be embarrassed about having needed some extra help learning in 1st and 2nd grade still, so I think would be HIGHLY resistant but should I push a tutor or assessment on him? (his school is not recommending but I always have lingering ‘could this be mild dyslexia?’ worries).

What do you tell a teen who is annoyed that a peer is a pathological liar? There is a girl that my daughter used to be close friends with who constantly tells lies of increasing preposterousness. They are in the same activities and we are friendly with her parents, so their paths cross regularly. My daughter is annoyed by the lies and keeps asking me why this kid does it. I don’t think the parents know, or at least they don’t know the full extent of the lying They are obviously unaware of some of the lies she is telling the other kids, and they repeat lies she has told them as the truth. I am NOT going to get involved by telling them “actually, my kid was there and says that your kid absolutely did not do what she told you she did at school.” Other than “keep your distance as much as possible” and “she says what she wishes were true, not what’s actually true” I don’t know what to say when my daughter complains about it.

What are your priorities when choosing a daycare for an infant? Right now we’re considering location, cost, daily hours of operation, and whether the facility is recommended by a friend or in local Facebook groups. What else am I missing? I’m pregnant with our first child and I have no idea what questions we’re supposed to be asking.

I hate sports just as much now as I did when I quit as a kid. Too much small talk, too many people I don’t know or don’t like. The social negatives far outweigh any physical or social positives.

I’ll keep showing up, because this is my problem, not my kids’. But add in an impossible practice timeslot, and I am not happy about this.

Hoping this can be a brag post (or a- if your kinder isn’t reading, it’ll be ok). Reading didn’t come naturally to my kiddo. I wasted money on a tutor between kindergarten and first. He got some extra support at school for a few months in first and second grade

And now- we just got his third grade state wide test scores from last year and he’s reading at a middle school level.

This board tends to talk about kindergartners starting and already reading simple chapter books, so hopefully it’s reassuring to hear a different story.

I have a WWYD. My kid wants to do her school talent show – she wants to sing and dance to a song, but it’s very much improv dancing with the occasional lyric thrown in. She’s six and I admire her confidence and also am like makes sense for her to just want to be silly at this age. The school has auditions and I’ve been trying to do some expectation management.

But the school, a K-6 private school, keeps sending out emails saying things like:

“ Please check in with your child and have them practice their talent or routine with you. Students are expected to have a planned and practiced routine for their audition to be a part of the show.”

Now I don’t even know if should let her audition. We’ve also been dealing with some medical stuff for her that has sucked up any extra time or energy we had so we’re not putting together a real routine in the two days before auditions, and nor does she want that. What would you do?

My just turned 3 year old seems to be highly emotional. She had multiple temper tantrums a day, for seemingly no reason. For example, she had one at preschool pickup yesterday but wasn’t asking for anything. When I asked her about it after she calmed down, she couldn’t tell me why it happened. Any advice? Books you recommend?

Her teachers say she has been a sweet quiet girl in class since school started a month ago, but that is not my experience at all. She’s like a tornado at home, who can’t sit still for a moment.

I think the answer here is say nothing, but wanted a gut check.

My daughters (10, 13) are friends with a pair of sisters (10, 13). On multiple occasions, I’ve overheard the sisters, both separately and together, talk about how their parents like/love their older brother (16) the best. He’s the favorite child, they do his activities and don’t care about mine, they spend all their time and money on him, etc.

Thing is…it’s true. Or at the very least, I have the very same impression they do and I don’t live in the house! He plays hockey and is on some elite track. Some examples:
– His parents are always at his games (he played for like 3 separate leagues growing up)
– As a freshman, he got recruited to a hockey specific high school. His parents paid for it (sisters go to public school). Even worse, he had to be driven 45 minutes each way every day. His parents traded in their car for a new one with better gas mileage for the specific purpose of driving him. His sisters, who previously were driven to school, had to start taking the bus so their brother got driven.
– This summer, he was invited to an international hockey tournament. His dad took him to europe for 3 weeks. His sisters did not go. They also didn’t do anything else because…
– Brother got into a hockey related boarding school. It’s super expensive. Their formerly SAHM got a job to pay for the boarding school. She now works all the time and so the girls just like sat around most of the summer while she worked (sometimes she would bring them along, it’s sort of a kid friendly type of place to be- think like working at a camp).
– The girls always talk about how the only vacations they ever take are to places where their brother has hockey. This is 100% accurate. Like, I can tell the parents are trying to make it fun for them but they are there for hockey.
– the youngest literally said “well i’m the 3rd. and i don’t play hockey. sometimes they forget i’m here.”

I’m pretty friendly with the parents. Is this something that I bring up and if so, how?

Does anyone have a good US president book for kids (and erm, maybe adults?). Both my university students and my son asked me presidential questions I couldn’t answer yesterday, so I might need a primer as well.

I told both about how my AP US teacher spent 3 weeks on Columbus and then had us play chess until after Christmas, when he got fired. “And that’s why CB UK is hazy on the details of the US constitution”.

TLDR – I have a 6 year old boy, at what age do I have to stop being naked around him?

I have three boys – the oldest of which is 6. I am solo most mornings because of work schedules. I get up at 5, do lunches and run on the treadmill before showering and getting them ready in earnest starting at 7. Out the door at 8.

My oldest is an early riser and is up by 6. He is fine to bop around and play on his own/eat the breakfast I put out while I tun/get ready.

He pops in and out to ask me questions, while I am showering and getting ready.

At what age do I need to stop being naked around him?

I really need my morning runs for my own well being and getting up at 4 so I can be completely ready before the gets up is not realistic.

So far he does not comment on my body beyond thinking tushes are generally hilarious.

Thanks!
