I am going to put it mildly when I say it is very difficult to soothe a teething baby. They’re cranky, uncomfortable, and may have other symptoms concurrently as well. Like almost all babies, when my son was teething he chewed on anything he could get his hands on. The most frustrating part of a baby chewing on something is when they inevitably drop whatever they were chewing on and then start crying. I ordered this Munch Mitt while my son was teething, and I wish I could have been the one to invent it. You put it on their hand like a mitten, and the top part near the fingertips is silicone and has bumps and ridges for them to chew on. The rest of the “mitt” is that crinkly material that babies love. It is available on Amazon.com for $13.99, is eligible for Prime, and comes in many fun colors and patterns. How do you keep cardigans from wrinkling? I don’t hang them up so I don’t get the shoulder bumps, but in my drawers they will eventually get wrinkled. I don’t have time in the mornings to break out the iron – are there any other quick fixes when you look like a wrinkled mess?
TheElms says
I hang cardigans. To avoid the shoulder bumps you need to use different hangers. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Joy-Mangano-Shirt-Huggable-Hangers/dp/B0772ZZJ5H/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1538746526&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=joy+mangano+hanger&psc=1
mascot says
I hang mine- maybe try different hangers to see if some work better than others. For morning wrinkles, I toss stuff in the dryer and use the steam option. Or spray with wrinkle release spray and hang until dry.
anon says
A fabric steamer is faster than ironing, but I know it’s still an extra step in the morning.
I have a few cardigans from Calvin Klein (found at a Macy’s-type store) that are made of a magical fabric blend that resists wrinkles really well. My silk-cashmere cardi from BR also fares well. I’ve pretty much given up on buying cotton cardis; I can’t keep them looking nice enough.
anon in brooklyn says
I have a steamer and it only takes a couple minutes. Much faster than ironing.
Anon says
Recommendations on steamers to look at?
Anonymous says
Not the same anon, but I’ve had a Rowenta stand steamer for over 7 years that I love and is still going strong.
anon in brooklyn says
I have this handheld one. https://www.amazon.com/Secura-Instant-Steam-Stainless-Soleplate-Accessories/dp/B01M08KH92/ref=sr_1_19?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1538751642&sr=1-19&keywords=clothing+steamer

I’ve had the same Conair upright steamer that I bought for $50 for 6 years and it’s going strong. I highly recommend getting an upright over a travel model – it’s a lot more convenient if you plan to use it daily or near-daily.
anon says
I’ve had this problem since I started working 10+ years ago. My solution has always been to just iron/dryer steam the sweaters I plan on wearing for the week.
The velvet hangers do help though.
Anonymous says
I hang mine on hangers after they dry, and that generally doesn’t cause shoulder bumps. When they are drying I hang them either flat or sort of folded in half on a drying rack.

Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations yesterday on aprons! I was not patient enough for etsy or creative enough to make them myself, so I ordered from Williams Sonoma!

11 month old baby, refusing the bottle at daycare. I breastfeed at home, and that’s going fine. She has always taken the bottle OK before, so what’s going on now!? I’ve been experimenting all week with fresh, frozen, even formula. I have sent milk in a cup, which she refuses as well. She’s eating solids fine, but definitely not in great enough quantity to suddenly replace the 9oz a day she was drinking during her 6-7 hours at daycare. Any ideas to end this hunger strike?
mascot says
Could be all sorts of things- teeth, distracted, earache, reverse cycle, it’s Tuesday. Maybe offer a bit more fat/calcium/protein in the solids. Does she otherwise like the cup for milk? Some kids take a while to realize that to a cup can serve more than water. If she’s not dehydrated and seems like she’s satisfied with eating, I’d probably wait her out for a bit and see if this phase passes.
Anonymous says
Any ideas for getting more nutrients in her? I did eggs last night for dinner which she devoured along with almost an entire banana. I’ve been sending beans at lunchtime and yogurt. Today I sent oatmeal to try and sneak some BM in that way.
She doesn’t seem dehydrated, and per teacher isn’t seeming crabby/hungry, but it just makes no sense to me that she is suddenly OK without a bottle. Really hoping it’s a fluke from this week rather than her new normal.
Anonymous says
My 11 mo old just started reverse cycling. It’s horrible. Is she nursing more at night?
Anonymous says
Yeah, she has been, but I want to end it hah. I need more sleep!
AwayEmily says
Have you tried switching to a faster flow nipple? Maybe that could jump-start things.
Anonymous says
Thanks! I did send her with a different bottle today which is a little faster. We’ll see if that does anything. I think half the battle is getting her to put the nipple in her mouth – right now she just shoves the bottle away with her hand.
Pogo says
+1, whenever we had a strike, this was the cause. Major hugs to you. I know how tough this is.

My daughter is younger, but a friend has an 11 month old that sometimes only wants solids at daycare and sometimes only wants milk and they’ve just been letting him have whatever he wants and he’s been fine. And he’s at daycare for 8-9 hours. 6 hours really isn’t that long for her to go without milk, if she’s eating solids and drinking water.
Anonymous says
The sudden drop from 9oz a day to zero at daycare is concerning though. It isn’t like she gradually weaned off, she just decided Monday she wasn’t doing it anymore.
Anonymous says
That’s what my friend’s son did – he was taking 8-12 oz and then some days he started wanting no milk and then some days 8 oz again. I think it would be more concerning if she wasn’t eating anything, but sometimes they get very into solids for a bit.
lsw says
We LOVED the munch mitt. Highly recommend. My son was more into the crinkly sound than anything else but it was great for that period where he was shoving his hand in his mouth so much that it was getting blisters.
Anonymous says
It had a short lifetime for us – maybe 4-6 months? But during that time it was CRITICAL. I found it especially helpful for travel (both air and car) because I didn’t have to worry about him dropping or losing it.
Leatty says
Favorite activities to do with sick toddlers? My 15 month old has a low grade fever, runny nose, and is mildly fussy, but otherwise seems fine. Since she can’t go to daycare today, I need to find ways to keep her entertained indoors (still in the 90s here). Any suggestions would be appreciated!
AnotherAnon says
Finger paint, bubbles, riding the push tricycle around the house, and helping me do chores like laundry or sweeping are all big hits when we have to stay indoors.
FVNC says
Our 18 mo old is also home sick today and was home yesterday too. We just returned from a loooooong trip to the grocery store. He loves riding in the cart, so it worked well for killing an hour. Yesterday was in the 90s where we live and I took him to a shaded playground anyway with a big water bottle. We had exhausted all indoor activities.
Anonymous says
playing with water in the sink or the bath are good options when all other ideas are exhausted

Agree that teething, earache, or mouth sores (from a virus) are a likely culprit – something causing pain. It will probably pass in a couple days.

It’s getting cold and I suppose I need to send my 8-mo to school in something other than bare feet. I had Robeez for my first but I wasn’t thrilled with the quality or the softness given the price. Is there a knockoff version somewhere? Or a magic pair of baby socks that don’t come off?
Anoner says
check etsy for knock off robeez. also i loved the zutano booties for my babe when he was little. so soft and generally stayed on pretty well
Redux says
+1 to zutanos! If babe is not yet walking zutanos are great, but they have no tread so are very slippery on wood or tile. Once my babies started walking we put them in robeez in the cooler months. Target has a knock off robeez that are totally adequate and half the price of robeez.
AnotherAnon says
I sent my LO to day care in footie pjs at that age. But it’s not that cold here.
Anon says
+1. Or look for footed pants. H&M and Carters usually have them, and maybe you can find some cheap ones on Amazon.
Anonymous says
We layered socks under them sometimes. But that gets a little annoying as they get more mobile and the fabric sticks together.
Anonymous says
Yeah, we didn’t do shoes until more like 12-13 months, but we did Nike sneakers. She was learning to walk at that time, so they were good. For a slipper type item, I cannot recommend Moccon brand baby slippers enough. My child wore them the winter she was in the 13-16 month range, and they were so great. We’d put them over socks and her leggings. She won’t keep anything like that on now though (at 3).
Below is a link to one example, but if you search “moccon baby slippers” on Amazon, you’ll get tons of patterns.
https://www.amazon.com/Mocc-Ons-Moccasin-Style-Slipper/dp/B00662PO8E/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1538751525&sr=8-12&keywords=moccons+baby+slippers
anon in brooklyn says
For socks that don’t come off, I used knee socks all winter for baby. The extra layer on the legs was nice for the carrier too.
Anonymous says
How about those sock slipper things? Hanna Andersson sells them but I know I’ve seen them for less elsewhere.
Anon says
Someone recommended zutano booties to me for this purpose

+1 Baby converse also stay on and are adorable.

Has anyone lived in Stockholm (or even visited)? I’m considering a job there but have never been. I’d love first-hand feedback! Family-friendliness, housing availability and general culture especially of interest.
Anonymous says
I’ve visited, but not lived there. I loved it as a tourist – it’s a beautiful city, friendly people, and easy access to the rest of Europe. Cost of living is very high though. And you’d need to check into how taxes work and health insurance and stuff like that – Sweden of course has a lot of social services for citizens but I’m not sure an expat would be eligible and private health insurance might be insanely expensive. Friends moved to Israel and are paying $3k/month for health insurance because they’re not eligible for national health care.

Happy Friday Wise-Hive! Questions for today:
1) DS is 10.5 months. Takes sippy for water ok. How did y’all switch to 100% sippy for cow’s milk at 1? Did you mix bottles/sippy or just go cold turkey? Our ped told us to wait until the 1-year mark for cow’s milk, and not introduce any earlier.
2) Did kiddos experience nap regressions once BF was dropped? For background, on weekends, I nurse DS before naps, mostly because it’s been a few hours and is time for his feed. This will stop once he’s weaned. No night feeds since 5-6 months/sleep training. Sometimes the nursing makes him more drowsy/fall asleep, otherwise he rolls around for a bit after nursing a falls asleep on his own. At daycare, his bottles/naps aren’t synced, and we have done CIO (and apply that as necessary during the regressions…welp). I’ve found that so far, I’m pretty laid back about most things, but sleep I am a bit…particular.
Pogo says
Following for #1. LO is 14mo and still drinks his cow’s milk in a bottle. He can use a straw, and a sippy cup, but still doesn’t seem to get the same volume down as he does with the bottle, so he’s frustrated by it and clearly prefers the bottle. As far as transitioning to cow’s milk, I think we gave him 50/50 BM/cow’s milk at daycare for a couple weeks.
For #2, I just started putting him down without nursing. He never seemed to have a problem. However, this could be because he’s a good sleeper so ymmv. He still demands his bottle upon waking though, both at daycare and at home. See #1. We have no plan yet for this…
Anonymous says
For #1, we just did cold turkey – that generally works best for our child’s personality. He wasn’t very interested in water at that age (not until almost 2!!) So hadn’t had much sippy cup experience. Just gave him one with a rubber spout and he was cranky for a couple days and then fine. Then switched to take n toss.
Moms Solo says
We did a week-long transition to cow milk in bottles for a week (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full) at 12 months, and then switched cold turkey to only sippy cups. He already took water from sippy. However, he refused to drink milk from a sippy and has still refused to do so to this day (8 months later) but we never tried to switch back to bottles are anything. He just eats cheese/yogurt etc. No nap regression for us, but we nap/sleep trained around 6 months, and the last feed we dropped was the first thing in the morning feed.
AnotherAnon says
Around 12 months (at the insistence of the pedi that the bottle needed to go) we just went cold turkey on bottles and switched to take n toss (I couldn’t get him to drink from a 360 cup at that point, otherwise I would have started with those). I introduced the sippy with milk at naptime and went from there. IMHO just trading the sippy cup for the bottle cold turkey is your best bet.

Fun question for you all – I’ve got a birthday coming up, and normally I’d celebrate by spending a weekend in our closest city with girlfriends who still live there. My husband will generally join for one night’s dinner out, but we have a ‘girls weekend’ for the most part. This year the timing won’t work as we’ve got a family wedding right after my birthday and need to travel. So – what would you do for a girl’s weekend at home?
I’m thinking sleeping in, having breakfast at my favorite french bakery, window shopping and maybe a foot massage or facial? Anything else you’d want to do with a free weekend day I’m not thinking of? Low cost options preferred (travel for 4 to family member’s destination wedding almost immediately after!)
anon says
Exercise class or leisurely jog with a friend? See a matinee (show or movie)? But yeah sipping coffee alone at a bakery sounds glorious.

I’m that crazy person who is excited about Christmas starting on December 26 so I’m already thinking presents. I can’t tell anyone in my actual family so I’m telling a group of internet strangers that I can’t wait to give my family their HA matching pajamas this year. They have a train print! My son is obsessed – OBSESSED – with trains, and his older sister (12) and we parents have a lot of fun with it. So now we’re all getting train pajamas for our PJ gift this year. My son is going to lose his mind. He loves trains *and* loves wearing matching shoes with Dad, so I think he’s going to get super excited about our whole family matching!
