I may have to pull the trigger on these shoes from Everlane — I keep thinking about them. They’re totally outside my usual wheelhouse, but I kind of like that — like, they’re so ugly they’re cool. What do you think of the trend, particularly with fashionable flats? Are you all for anything that’s comfortable and stylish, or do you prefer a sleeker, more classic version of fashion? I don’t like these sneakers at all. Maybe it’s the white, lug-ish sole. I’m a huge fan of slip-on sneakers and thing they can look really cool. I think the Vince Blair slip-ons are a much better choice.
Philanthropy Girl says
I don’t have particular feelings about these shoes – although they look like the’d make my already large feet look enormous. But I’m also a big fan of slip-on sneakers. I’ve had great luck with Sketchers being both comfortable and durable.
Meg Murry says
Yeah, I’m not really a fan of the white chunky sole and edges that is on a lot of casual shoes like this. Especially if the rest of the shoe is dark colored. I don’t hate it, but I don’t want to buy it either. It seems like a lot of companies that make multiple colors of shoes either do white soles and edges or black soles and edges, and I’m not a huge fan.

Happy Friday ladies! Question about babies and bad dreams. At what age do babies start to have bad dreams / nightmares? DS is 8 months and in the last couple of weeks has had two episodes of what appear to be nightmares. It happens about 45 minutes after we put him to bed. He screams – I mean, really screams, not at all like his normal crying or fussing – and when we go in he is not awake but is clearly terrified. He has his eyes closed and is still limp like he’s sleeping; even when we pick him up he doesn’t really wake but continues to cry. It takes some time (5 minutes?) for him to wake up and begin to calm down. It’s really upsetting to see and I’m a little worried – is this normal at this age? Have others experienced this or have tips? Also plan to mention it to his ped but we don’t go in for another month.
mascot says
We had a couple of episodes like that when DS was little (under 2 yrs). I don’t know if they qualified for night terrors, but they were pretty much as you described. We never could figure out a pattern or trigger so we just dealt with them as they came and tried not to worry. There are so many normal, yet freaky to watch, developmental changes that happen in babies and a lot of them are the result of immature nervous systems/brains.
Philanthropy Girl says
We never had anything that extreme, but my little one had a few crying episodes around that age as well where he wasn’t awake. I’m certain I read that they can have nightmares at that age and even younger. I think what you’re doing is appropriate – calm and cuddle him until he’s settled and not afraid any more, and then put him back to bed.
I would probably try to make sure he isn’t exposed to things that could frighten him during his waking hours -like an older sibling watching intense TV or frightening images in a book. Other than that, talk to your ped to be certain, but it sounds like a normal developmental stage he will probably outgrow.

That is the crazy thing – I can’t figure out what scary things he could be dreaming about! The only TV he watches is golf with dad. Maybe he’s secretly terrified of our (large but goofy) dog who’s always trying to lick his face?

Not sure why my name didn’t show up, but that was me.

Is your little one hitting some big milestone? We had “night terrors” around the time my kiddo started crawling and when she started pulling herself up to stand. My ped recommended not waking her up (she might wake up disoriented and be even more scared), just helping her back to a comfy position and rubbing her back a lot, and remembering that it’s scarier for the parents than for the kiddo who is asleep and not aware of the fear.
Anonymous says
Thanks – that’s helpful. He has been working on crawling (no forward progress yet though) so maybe that’s it.

I have a pair of Crocs brand slip ons that look a lot like this that I love. They aren’t super stylish, but they are non obtusive and super comfy. I wear them to the playground most weekends.

Toms makes shoes a lot like these, in both leather and canvas. I bought the black canvas ones and love them. Wear them all the time. Whether they’re stylish or not….

Random b**b question — after bf-ing for a year, my girls were completely limp and frankly I was used to them being that way. All the sudden in the last month they’ve become fuller again. Does this happen? Are they regenerating so to speak? Or am I over-looking the obvious that I might be pregnant again (not impossible, but I thought unlikely). Any other explanations?
TK says
Hasn’t happened with mine – C before preg, G+ during nursing, now a quite sad and deflated B+, with no fullness even during monthly cycle. Stopped b-feeding 8 months ago. So you might be preggo. Alternatively, maybe this is just something that happens and there’s still hope that mine will eventually regain some of their former glory.
CHJ says
Mine have definitely gotten less “deflated”, about six months post-weaning. I’ve lost some weight and I’ve been doing some plank-intensive workout videos, so maybe it’s that or maybe it’s the skin regaining some elasticity?
Meg Murry says
I agree that being pregnant is a possibility, probably the first one that came to my mind. Other thoughts – you’ve gained some weight and they’ve filled back out a little? Or maybe you are a little fuller from PMS? You bought new bras or pulled some out from the back of the drawer and they just look perkier with more support?
But yes, I’d take a test tomorrow morning just to rule that in or out.

I’m traveling overseas for business for eight days. Any suggestions on making the separation easier on my one-year-old (and me)? He will be at home with his father and (very familiar) grandparents.
I’m most wondering about pumping. I’ll be traveling to a time zone eight hours ahead of me. I’m planning to adjust my pumping schedule to local time. Does that make sense? I don’t want to get up at night to pump. (And any hints for places to pump at Heathrow?)
MSJ says
I just flew via Heathrow and they have fabulous baby changing rooms that also have comfy nursing chairs. They aren’t as common as standard bathrooms but I did pass quite a few. I didn’t check for power cords, but definitely remember a converter if you have an electric pump.
And others may be more suited to comment on this, but at this age you may want to prepare yourself for the possibility of him weaning during your absence.
I am preparing for a few short business trips this fall (1-2 nights) and am not looking forward to the separation from my one-year olds either. I’m sure it will be easier for them than me but I look forward to any advice you get!
Samantha says
Maybe this is just me, but given that baby is one year old, I would totally take the opportunity to wean

Yes, I was going to say the same. At a minimum, if there isnt an allergy, have someone give him a sippy of cows milk at the times he usually nurses and see how it goes. You’ll still want to pump for your own comfort and in case he is still all for nursign when you come back, but this would be a good time to taper off.
I think pumping only during the day should be fine, as long as it doesn’t mean you skip pumping for 16 hours straight or anything like that. You may want to travel with a hand pump so that if you get uncomfortable and can’t pump right away you can at least releave the worst of it in a few minutes in any private space.
For me, when I traveled I liked my husband to send me quick pics of the kids from time to time – easy enough to do on a smart phone and made me feel better.
ELL says
It’s a good suggestion, and I’m totally open to being done with nursing when I return. But I know others have mentioned having hormonal and emotional instability when they weaned, and I didn’t want to risk that in the midst of a very stressful trip. I am solidly ambivalent about continuing nursing. I’ll just see what happens.
