My daughter started JK at a local private school this year. She is showing some signs of performance anxiety – which isn’t surprising given DH and I both had it in some form, but I want to help her manage it. She often tells me that she wasn’t able to cut along the lines/draw a triangle/whatever so she started to cry. I don’t think her teacher is particularly strict or anything, she has reported that DD is “a little stressed out” but generally doing very well. I noticed this at her weekend soccer class too – if she can’t send the ball into the goal immediately, she comes to the sidelines and sits with me because she “can’t do it”, whereas last year she happily just fumbled along with the ball. I repeatedly tell her that we are proud of her, that it’s OK not to be able to do things but it’s important to try. Advice on promoting self confidence? My parents were pretty intense with the success pressure and it took me years to get rid of my intense fear of failure, and I don’t want that for my daughter, but she seems to have it anyway.
Guys. My kindergartener found some of his schoolwork that we had recycled in the outside recycling bin, and he is heartbroken about it. We have a huge stack of pictures and projects in our kitchen that we keep. I don’t think we are ruthless about throwing things, but we can’t keep everything. It was mostly activities and coloring page type work.
He brought it up again days later asking if I threw it away because I didn’t like it or didn’t think it was good (bringing up how his teacher has an Example Board for work that is really well done). He told me I hurt his feelings. I feel about two inches tall and terrible. I’ve tried to reassure him that we love his work, we keep a lot of it, and we didn’t realize that he wanted to keep the papers that we had gotten rid of. We thanked him for telling us how he felt and asked how we can make it better (all work is now going in a brown grocery bag to keep).
Can someone reassure me that I am not a terrible parent? How do other folks handle the mounds of work that they receive? Anything else I can do to make this better?
I know there was a ton of chatter last summer about summer camps, so I’m curious for a general poll. What is the youngest you’d let your child do a week-long sleepaway summer camp? Assume neuro-typical, a desire to go, but would not go knowing any bunk mates. The children in question are twins, but different genders, so would be in a separate bunk. The camp is a very well-reviewed and highly regarded camp with a long history, but you do not know anyone personally who has sent their kids there. The camp is about 2 hours from your house (and no, we do not live in Texas, ha!).
My eleven year old has straight fine hair that gets a bit frizzy. She would love a hair styling tool and would use it a lot. But I”m noticing that some of them are heavier or harder to maneuver (she’s good for a sixth grader but something heavy would be harder). Any suggestions? budget pretty high – I think she’d use it a ton.
Chicago folks, any suggestions for things to do in the post-Christmas week (probably Dec. 29 or 30) for a mom and 9 year old daughter? We live in a neighboring state and come to the city pretty often but haven’t been at the holidays in a while. We’re having holiday tea at the Peninsula so looking for things that aren’t food-centric. I know the Christkindlmarket is closed by then, unfortunately. Seeing a show is one of our go-tos but there seems to be a bit of a lull after Christmas with several things closing on the 27th. Would appreciate any ideas!
My oldest is in public school and in third grade this year in Massachusetts so it’s our first year with our state standardized tests, the MCAS. I’m really annoyed (but also acknowledging I probably just need to accept this) that she’s doing really well in math but then took a short assessment yesterday in a form meant to mirror the MCAS format and she did terribly on it. Now she thinks she doesn’t “get” third grade math and is low key freaking out.
We overcame a lot of math anxiety last year, working all summer with a saint of a tutor/her 2nd grade teacher and she came in to this year SO happy and confident. I just hate that a standardized test is sucking that out of her. Yes -it’s early, and she’ll improve, and I probably need to just “trust the process” at this stage. I’m offering positive reinforcement at home, not freaking out and calling the teacher or doing anything remotely unhinged over this, I promise. But it was pretty hard to watch last night, and all over a stupid standardized test. Argh.
What are your MOST comfortable work pants? Like, the ones you wear when you are about to get your period, and you feel generally terrible, and you didn’t sleep well the night before?
I have lots of lovely tailored pants but sometimes I just want to maximize comfort.
