A woman wearing dark blue jeans and a cream-colored turtleneck

It’s turtleneck time! If your collection of cold-weather basics needs a refresh, this ribbed version would be at the top of my list.

Made from soft, U.S. grown, Supima cotton with a touch of stretch, this slim fitting turtleneck works under everything from weekend sweats to your Monday morning suit jacket. I like to wear my turtlenecks under my ever-growing collection of crewneck wool sweaters for a pop of contrasting color and an extra layer of warmth.

Everlane’s Luxe Rib Turtleneck is $48 and comes in sizes XXS-XXL. It’s available in half-dozen go-with-anything colors.

When did your baby get their first hair cut? We have a little boy, under 16 mos. He doesn’t have a ton of hair yet but there are wisps of hair peeking over the tops of his ears and he has one pretty good curly lock at the back of his neck that would probably be over his collar if he ever wore collared shirts.

DH has a military background and still keeps his own hair military-appropriate. It twitches him out to see hair over the top of LO’s ears. He has suggested/threatened to cut the baby’s hair himself.

I told him that the baby is not in the military and we will not be maintaining his hair to uniform standards. LO does not sit still even to eat. I’m worried about the danger of putting scissors near his face (we do not own safety scissors, not that you should cut hair with dull scissors anyway). I want a professional to do it. And I would prefer to wait until he needs it. They change so quickly at this age, maybe in a few months he will sit still for more than half a second. I told DH I will agree to do it before LO has a mullet. Reasonable or no, should we just take the baby to the kid’s haircut place now?

Asking another divorce question on behalf of a friend: what would you do if your marriage had essentially cooled to one of coparents and roommates, and had been that way for a long time? Friend’s spouse had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol for some years that caused a lot of damage (emotional only, not physical), but they have been working through that for the past year or so and the spouse is now sober. Things in their day to day life are a lot better but my friend says she’s lost all romantic affection for her spouse and isn’t sure she’ll get it back (or wants to?) Kids are preschool/early elementary.

To me this seems like a job for couples counseling but my friend wasn’t sure that counseling could somehow reignite her attraction for her spouse

What, if any, action would you take upon hearing after the fact that people in KKK hoods were out and about in your small city? I don’t know who it was. I know it’s not a funny joke or appropriate for Halloween, but I don’t know whether they were motivated by egregious willful ignorance or explicit ideology…

Would you consider yourself confident in your parenting decisions, insecure, or somewhere in between? I see such a wide range in my personal life (and online), probably a bit more insecurity (“I feel like I’m failing all the time”).

trying to figure out how to handle HW with my 3rd graders. my general philosophy is we do what the teacher says, so thus far:
K – no HW

1st grade – weekly HW assigned on Monday, due on Fridays, collected by teachers and some kind of incentive if turn it in, thus making it mandatory (like classroom dollars or points or whatever. i think they are not allowed to count HW to their grades where we live). once my kids got used to having HW, it wasn’t a fight and they usually got all of their work done for the week on M/T.

2nd grade – weekly HW assigned Mondays, due on Fridays. Some teachers collected it and made it required, others did not. Once my kids realized it was optional in their class, doing it became a big fight and so DH & I decided, if they don’t need the extra practice and their teachers fully say it’s optional, then it’s optional and they never did HW and still did quite well in school

3rd grade – VERY mixed messages from the teachers (there is one teacher for math/science and another for english/social studies). They have ELA HW that is handed out on a Monday that covers a two week period, that is the way to learn their spelling words, so they do that, and while the teacher sort of says its required, she also forgets to collect it half the time and there is no carrot or stick if you do/dont turn it in. The math teacher assigns daily HW, but also doesn’t collect it half the time and no carrot/stick if you do/don’t turn it in. One of my kids has had it in her backpack for the past 3 weeks, but has forgotten to hand it in. I honestly left my parent teacher conference confused. The teachers’ message is kind of that it is “required,” but then their actions don’t really fit that.

Do I make them do it or not? I do think now that they are getting older it is good to develop a habit, and my twins generally are rule followers and wouldn’t want to forget their HW when they were in 1st grade, but if the teachers are so lackadaisical about it, the message is very confusing. Thoughts?

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TO ALL MY FELLOW TEXAS CMOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a kid’s spa/boutique experience in Chicago? Something like the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, but I have no desire to go all the way to Disney.

Tricks and tips to changing kids (5 and 3) after swim class? They are so wet it’s impossible to get their long pants on in a tiny changing room that’s super gross. During the warmer months we’d just go in the car in our swimsuits but now that’s not an option in NY.

Do I need a super absorbent towel to dry them off better?

Our elderly cat has started going #1 outside the box. We’re taking her to the vet on Friday, but any suggestions to help in the meantime? I had success once when I saw her about to go by picking her up and carrying her to the box, but we can’t do that all the time of course.
