A colorful puzzle picturing a farm, on top of a green mat

One of my extended family’s holiday traditions is doing an enormous puzzle together over a few days. When it’s time to carve the turkey, we can get that puzzle out of the way and still keep our progress with a puzzle roll-up mat like this one.

This 48″ x 36″ inch mat is designed to fit up to a 3,000-piece puzzle. Simply assemble your puzzle on the mat at your own pace, roll it up, and put it away until next time.

Masterpieces’ roll-up mat is $19.99 at Nordstrom.

Is anyone willing to share updates or outcomes on something they asked for advice about here? Small or large, whether you took the advice or not.

I’ve been thinking lately about how kids can have such different needs, and how so much of parenting is about figuring out what works for your specific kid and family. The “many different ways to parent well” comment yesterday also stuck with me. I know some people share updates already, but I thought it would be interesting to see how some advice was implemented or not for different kids/situations.

One of the superstars in my profession just started a webinar by debating the developmental effects of legos– including showing off his daughter’s impressive build. :)

Related to the coat question below–where are you buying really warm hats and mittens/ gloves for your kids? I’m thinking of the kind of winter accessories you find at a ski shop, with fleece lining for extra warmth etc. I find this stuff easy to find if I’m on the mountain, but we won’t be skiing until February and it gets cold here soon!

Recommendations for a lightweight “nap mat”? For those who don’t know (I didn’t), a nap mat is not a mat; it’s basically a sleeping bag that doesn’t zip closed. The options I’ve seen are all cozy and warm. LO’s room at daycare is warm and LO runs warm generally; the teachers say he gets too hot during his nap and wakes up sweaty and cranky. He needs to sleep in a nap mat per daycare policies, so I can’t just send in sheets or a walking sleep sack. I asked around for recommendations but the other parents seem to have the same problem.

As an aside, finding new PJs this time of year is hard for a hot sleeper! I’m waiting for a kyte baby sale. Unfortunately they don’t have nap mats though.

Anyone have advice on how to best support a friend whose family is going through something awful where there’s no end in sight and no practical advice that could possibly improve the situation? In this case they’re from a war-torn area and their friends and family are constantly suffering and even getting killed. They talk about it a lot (understandably!) and I say I’m so sorry over and over again but that feels so insufficient and I don’t know what else to say. I feel like I’ve been a good friend to people going through hard things like breakups and job loss, but this feels different because there’s no way any of us can change the situation and no guarantee that things will be better with time.

Before trying to have a baby, did your doctor (or for those of you with male partners, your partner’s doctor) discuss preconception health at all? Curious how often anyone got advice on starting a prenatal, managing occupational risks, and stuff like that. My doctor said to start a prenatal and my husband’s doctor said nothing. Any other choices we made, we did on our own. What was your experience?

My kids were watching Lady and the Tramp and there’s a scene where the dogs’ owners put their newborn baby into a bassinet and cover him with a blanket. My 10yo yells “Oh no! They’re putting a BLANKET in there!” and my 4yo looks at me and asks urgently “Mama, is the baby gonna DIE??”

Clearly the “safe sleep” messaging that is plastered all over our city’s public transit is having an effect…

I’m sure this has been discussed here before, but is it still worth buying Lands’ End winter coats for kids or has the quality declined with the restructuring enough that it’s not worth it? The kids like the style of them but the ones we’ve had up to now are hand me downs and probably manufactured a decade ago.
