I love wearing merino in the winter under my sweaters or blazers — it keeps me warm without being stifling, and given the fabric’s odor-resistant properties, it saves me a bit of laundry.
You can actually wear merino in the summer too! This wool tee from Icebreaker has the same comfort, breathability, and odor-resistance as its winter counterpart. Merino is great at regulating body temperature so you won’t overheat even as temps rise. This tee even has little details like offset shoulder seams to prevent chafing.
Icebreaker’s Merino Tech Lite II T-Shirt is $80 and comes in seven colors and sizes XS–XL.

Can any moms of kids recommend any great sleepaway camps? I asked on the main page also but figured I’d ask here. We’re non-religious Midwesterners and no one does it near us. My son is almost 12, not into competitive sports at ALL, and smart/nerdy in that D&D way.

I responded to you on the main page, but look at university-run camps that are more academically oriented. I was similar to your kid, and did several of those camps and it was a great experience for me. Living independently in college dorms is super fun for young teens, and if you’re not sporty or outdoorsy this is much better than traditional camp (which I would have hated).

Specifically I can vouch for Purdue’s GERI camps (https://www.education.purdue.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/GER2I-2023-Summer-Residential-Camp-Brochure_accessible.pdf) but there are many similar programs at other large universities.

+1. A few years ago I would have recommended CTY, but that program imploded last year and I would never send a kid there now. If he’s into arts or music, Interlochen is also fantastic for that age group.
Anon says
Wait what happened to CTY?!

Last year they cancelled nearly all of their in-person classes at the last minute because of staffing issues. Like days before the session was supposed to start. My daughter tried an on-line course and it was terrible.

As a Midwesterner, I recommend looking at some of the options in northern Minnesota – specifically, the Concordia Language Villages might attract a more nerdy group than other camps, and while still active (hiking and canoeing based) Camp Widjiwagan has a cult following among my friends, who tend towards the nerdy side.

+1 I attended a Concordia Language Camp as a kid. I’d highly recommend. They have some pretty niche languages available. I was not very sporty and thought it was fun.

Space camp might be fun for him. I went in Huntsville, AL when I was a kid (for one week at a time). Not sure how it compares price wise to other sleepaway camps these days, but I am guessing it may be more expensive.

+1 to Space Camp but I definitely think it’s pricey compared to other options. So much fun though! Also they have parent child camps, so I’m selfishly not sending my kid there alone because I want to go too.

My daughter went to space camp in Huntsville before the pandemic hit. Surprisingly, I found it less expensive than a lot of other camps ($1,000/week as opposed to up to $2,000/week). It was fun but the experience was diminished a bit by the fact that a lot of groups go together and then a couple of solo campers are put with the group. She did not enjoy being one of two girls thrown in with a boy scout troop that all knew each other. More fun when all the kids are strangers.

ActionQuest in the Virgin Islands?
Anon says
Omg I want to do this
Spirograph says
I did ActionQuest as a HS graduation gift from my parents, and it was awesome! I will say, I felt a little out place and out of my element as a quintessential midwestern suburbanite. Most of the other kids were from NYC or other big coastal cities and with the exception of one girl from Wisconsin, they all felt very rich and worldly to me. Literally that was the first time I’d heard of sushi. But it was a great experience, overall
Anon says
Yeah I was going to say this looks cool but I feel like it skews superrrr wealthy.
Anon says
Sounds like a good learning experience – it’s important to rub shoulders with all kinds of people in life.

I already cannot find winter sweaters to wear because they all contain at least 5% wool or cashmere and are unbearably itchy. Now wool is coming for my summer clothes too?

Is anyone due this winter in a cold climate? I have an unused, very nice Finnish infant snowsuit that I never got to use which I’m happy to send to someone. Link to follow
