I just spent the end tire day shopping for jeans for my newly minted 9 year old. She’s not a 7/8, not a 10/12. Size 8 bootcut jeans were too small and size 10s were too big. She didn’t like flares or straight. She wanted skinny jeans but nothing fit her (rock solid soccer) thighs and waist. Abercrombie has a 9/10 but she didn’t like any of the styles. Jcrew had one pair that fit but she didn’t like that they had no stretch and to keep her booty from showing she needed a belt (which she wears, but doesn’t want to be
wearing always).
We ended up buying super stretchy jeans in a size 12, and she couldn’t believe it since the rest of her clothes are all so much smaller. I wasn’t expecting to start doling our life wisdom of ignoring sizing and just trying stuff on at age 9 and 2 weeks but here we are!

I have a 9 yo and agree that there’s a size gap between the 7/8 sizes and the 10/12 jeans. But looking around, there also seems to be a growth spurt that make girls shoot up to the 10/12 size pretty soon after they start having this issue. My 9 yo daughter’s soccer team has two tiers–girls that have already sprouted and girls that haven’t.
We ended up going with a looser cut of jeans from Oah Kosh that are *just* long enough in a 7/8. Fortunately the style this season is for jeans to be a bit cropped so I’ll get a bit of time. Hopefully these will hold us through the school year and she can sprout over the summer in shorts and I can get 10/12s next year. If she sprouts sooner, I’ll be getting her a new winter wardrobe. Blah.

There’s definitely a size gap at this age! My daughter is 8, and I foresee this becoming a problem in the future. I think she could do a size 8 in the waist for a good long while, but length is going to be an issue.

After a really busy couple months with travel, visiting grandparents and fall/Halloween festivities every single weekend, we have nothing at all on the agenda this weekend (a playdate got canceled due to illness). Planning to do some baking, but other favorite low key things to do at home with a 5 year old?

I know I may have to repost this during the weekday, but really, what do people DO with toddlers during the winter?
First snow of the season here and we have a 15 month old. We played in the snow, had hot chocolate, went out to breakfast, took a nap, played with every single toy we had… and then it was 3 pm.
I’m going to need more of a game plan or it’s going to be a loooong winter.

Haha, I took mine to the grocery store today to kill an hour or so.

Pre-covid we did lots of museums, play spaces and the library. In this icky cold and flu season, I’d probably skip many of those germ factories and just set up lots of playdates. The parents sip coffee and chat. The kids play. It consumes most of a weekend morning.

More screen time. Take kid with you to run errands. Do chores while they toddle around after you. Kids museums and playplaces are germy, but I’ve never found the library to be much of an illness risk. A library trip and reading the books you got is a good way to kill a couple hours. Baking if you have the tolerance for cleaning up the mess. And early bedtimes! At that age my kid went to bed before 6 pm in winter, so once you make it to 3 pm you don’t really have that much of the day left.
Ymmv but I have a hard enough time arranging drop off play dates for my 4 year old where the kids actually entertain each other and the parents don’t have to stick around, and I can’t imagine having weekly play dates for a 15 month old. I don’t think play dates for kids under 3 are really a thing in my area unless the moms are already good friends.

You’re right: I bet the weekday crowd will have more ideas. But I have twin 21 month olds and it really is a slog. Yesterday we all got a stomach bug so today we’re moving in slow motion (I’ve yet to get dressed if I even decide to do that today) and it’s honestly kind of nice. They also took a three hour nap instead of one hour so that’s eating up a lot of our day. We might go to target and then it’s dinner and bedtime at 6. The older kiddo watches a lot of tv and we play games after dinner but it’s just a hard season.

Errands, bookstore, library, dance party while watching old Wiggles videos. More errands.
