Labor Day is just around the corner and that means one more long weekend getaway before the end of summer.
I’ve been on the hunt for a weekender and this expandable travel bag from Longchamp might find its way into my cart. A zip insert allows this durable nylon bag to grow or shrink to fit your needs. It also has a removable crossbody strap, interior pocket (really wish Longchamp would add more interior pockets to their totes), and water resistant lining. As with all of Longchamps Le Pliage bags, it folds flat.
This travel bag is $255 for cognac (just a few left) or $265 for black at Nordstrom.

calling any ballet parents says
Maybe late so may have to post Monday – has anyone had a kid do the nutcracker? I’m debating whether to encourage DD to try out. It sounds like a great experience, but it also sounds like a huge commitment. She’s 8, FWIW!

Personally I wouldn’t stop a kid who really wanted to do it, but I wouldn’t encourage it. By my view is why add lots of extra time commitments unless it’s something that’s important to your kid, and I know others here feel differently and see more intrinsic value in activities.

If this is a professional production, before she auditions you need to understand that a huge part of casting is not just who is the best dancer or takes direction and corrections best, but who is the right height for which costume and who creates the desired look in combination with other dancers. She could be the best eight-year-old dancer in the entire school, but if she’s short for her age and not tall enough for the lamb costume she’s out of luck. You also need to be very certain you understand the rehearsal and performance commitments. Our Nutcracker does several performances at a venue that’s 2 – 3 hours away depending on traffic, and requires rehearsals during school time. It is a massive commitment for students and parents alike.

Oh, and I definitely wouldn’t encourage her to audition. I’d only let her audition if she is absolutely set on it entirely of her own accord. But if she’s totally into it and you can swing the time commitment, it could be a magical experience.

I would imagine there’s tons of politics too, if it’s anything like ice show casting.
OP says
Oh yes, they explicitly say it’s by height. She’s in the ballet school attached to the ballet, so she should get a part though. Rehearsals aren’t during school (mostly Saturdays, which are free for us) but there will be performances on school nights… we’re only 15-20 minutes max from the theater, so that part’s pretty easy.
But agh, we have one Saturday this fall when we’re planning to travel and I’m realizing she probably has to choose between that and Nutcracker. And that’s tough!
Anon says
I didn’t think missing one Saturday is a big deal if you’re not at the dress rehearsal or performance stage. I wouldn’t ask permission, I’d just go. They’re not going to kick her out of the show for it. Would be a different story if you were planning to miss every third rehearsal or something.

I would ask other parents about this. It really depends on the company.

Whether enrollment in the school guarantees a part will vary. Our company only allows kids from its own school to audition, and there are still plenty of disappointed kids who don’t get cast.

I think it depends on the city/your kiddo. I did Nutcracker for years in my mid-size city. It occupied every weekend from September – December (like most of Sat/Sun), we did 20 plus performances in our city, plus travel performances and appearances at malls, etc. It was a lot of commitment but I had friends that did it and there was lots of carpooling. I loved it. We had so much freedom/responsibility (that I can’t believe looking back on it) but it was and is a very fond childhood memory. I wasn’t a star or anything but performed several different of the children’s roles. I echo other comments that it is political (particularly the bigger roles) but it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.

+1 location matters a lot. Nutcracker in a small Midwest city and New York City Ballet Nutcracker are not comparable.
