Sure a drink in a tall, clear glass looks pretty, but that cold drink will be tepid in about an hour on a hot day.
I have a few insulated tumblers, and this one from Yeti will be a fine addition to my collection. This 20 oz., double-walled, vacuum-insulated tumbler will keep your drink hot or cold for hours. It features a splash-proof and spill-resistant lid for adventures on the go. It also comes in a rainbow of colors so you’ll find the perfect one.
Yeti’s Rambler Tumbler is $35 at REI and also available at Amazon.

I did not get the Yeti hype at all, but I went on a boat trip last month where everyone got their own Yeti for the week, and I immediately became a convert. I now have two, one for hot drinks and one for cold. I love that I can set them on wood and not have to worry about water or heat damage.

The lids are great too, with the magnetized slider.

i carry mine around with me 24/7. it’s about 3 years old and follows me everywhere.

Controversial, but I have some cheap, no-name water bottles that keep my water colder, and longer, than the Yetis I coveted.

I love my yeti ramblers because they work really well, can be used for hot or cold, have the slider lid and they are dishwasher safe (and clean well in the dishwasher). I have a couple of corkcicles I rarely use (but comparable in performance) because they are hand-wash only.
Back when my commute was a little more varied, the contigo snap and seal tumblers are truly leak-proof for throwing in a bag (unlike the yetis), clean reasonably well in the dishwasher (no mold yet) and can take a beating (10 years of rolling through a garage and dropped out of bags and once, down a flight a stairs and while they look a little rough, the functionality is all still there).

I’ve thrown my contigo in my bag many times. No incidents so far. I don’t even have the snap and seal; I have the west loop with the button. So maybe I am lucky that nothing has ever hit the button. But I love those tumblers.

I never felt like the button ones got truly clean (lots of crevices). For me, the snap and seal ones have a lot fewer places for mold to hide (and are more open for dishwasher cleaning).

Continuing the theme from the morning about how life gets easier once kids are 5ish, we’re finally having a dropoff playdate this weekend and I could not be more excited!! My kid looooves play dates and wants them all the time, but I’m a socially awkward introvert who really dreads hours of small talk with a mom I don’t know. I expect the kids (almost 5) to play with minimal supervision, but of course I’ll be around if someone gets hurt or there’s a conflict they can’t resolve. Is there anything I should ask the mom when she drops her kid off?

I always ask about any allergies and whether they can have snacks or drinks (if I don’t already know). My kid never wants to eat anything until another kid is there. DD’s (4) bestie is across the street and they run (supervised to cross the street from our front porches) between the houses. It’s really opened up a lot of freetime because half the time my kid is over there. They are looser with the sweets than we are, so sometimes kiddo is not hungry for dinner because she filled up on say chocolate cake, but it’s a small price to pay for what is essentially a quasi babysitting co-op.

Oh that sounds lovely. My daughter’s friends are all through her daycare and not in our neighborhood so it takes a fair amount of adult effort to get them together. I’m definitely looking forward to her starting elementary school and making more friends in our neighborhood so she can have that kind of relationship.

I ask about allergies and if snacks are ok. I also volunteer that we don’t have any guns, smokers, or pets. I’m hoping to normalize the “do you have any guns at home” question. I’ve prepped my kids for what to do if they come across a gun, too. We are in a deep blue city, and no one has ever answered yes so far, but I’d still like us all to be prepared.

I have always asked about guns. Deeeeeeep blue city but you know what? All kinds of people have guns. Glad I asked.
Anon says
How do you usually ask? And if they have guns do you not send kiddo?
This is a conversation I need to learn to have.
Anon says
Yeah, I’m the OP of this thread and we always ask about guns and pools. Kids can get killed so quickly by a gun or drowning, that I think it’s worth asking about those things even if I’ll be in the home. I didn’t ask when the kids were 2 and not leaving my line of sight, but since about age 3.5 or so the kids are often in a different room even when I’m present at the play date, so it’s important to know this info.
I don’t volunteer info though. I figure if they care they can ask. No one has asked.

FWIW we are in a deeeeeeeep blue town in MA. We have a gun. It’s for sport (targets).
We’ve actually never been asked, but would fully volunteer that the gun itself is in a locked case and the ammo is stored in a locked gun safe separate from the shotgun.
We don’t hide that my husband belongs to an area gun club, and he grew up in a state known for its firearms. He is also an Eagle Scout and has taken all state mandated safety courses and has had an interview with our town’s chief of police before getting his license.
