I just got my first pair of Allbirds’ Tree Loungers slip-ons, and my feet are loving them!
These lightweight, breathable shoes are great for warmer weather. The flexible, cushioned sole is comfortable for all-day wear. (I’ve schlepped up and down stone streets in them.) They’re also made from renewable materials, fully machine washable, and available in a slew of colors. The stretchy fabric accommodates my wider feet.
I’m looking forward to sporting these on my summer vacation!
Allbirds’ Tree Loungers are $100. They come in whole sizes 5–11, and nine color combinations. You can also do what I did and save a little money by buying a gently used pair through their ReRun Marketplace.

So I posted Tuesday about being exposed to COVID and feeling guilty because I ruined a big trip.
It was Disney and I did get COVID (I’m fine. Mostly upset with mild symptoms.) Shout out to Disney for letting me move everything out by a few months at no cost. Plane tickets were similar – thank you past me.
So now I am actually taking a sick day rather than powering through. Thank you for being a place where I can freak out when I have to spend the rest of my life pretending I have it together.
Anon says
Glad you’re not too sick and sorry about the trip. I’m supposed to leave on a big bucket list trip two weeks from today and am already so anxious about getting a positive test that ruins it. The number of people I know recently who’ve had to cancel planned travel because they got Covid is insane.
PS. Just FYI that standard airline tickets are now changeable with no fees. So there’s no need to book higher priced “refundable” tickets for this contingency (unless you really want a cash refund instead of an airline voucher).

Happy Friday, all! Has anyone tried other Allbirds styles and liked/disliked them?
Megs says
Um, yes. I love them all except the boat shoe(skippers) which I just never seem to wear. Haven’t tried the ballet slipper. Adore the piper and unreasonable amount, although I do cut the weird back tab off (easy to do and then it doesn’t hit my heel). Probably own 10 pairs by now and most are literally getting worn out because I just wear them so much. they wash as well as claimed. Don’t let the full size only thing faze you, I’m a 71/2 and having 8s has never been an issue. They do a referral program if you want $15 off, let me know and I will post my email (have to enter yours in their system).

I’m wearing some now – I don’t know the name of the style but they are classic tie sneakers. I think they run a tad small so size up if you are on the fence. For me, they are very comfortable for the first 3/4 of the day, then they start making my toes a little sore (they were a gift and probably should have sized up).
My husband loves his.

Husband loves his multiple pairs. Did not work for my feet. My big toes/toenails point upward and the front toe box area of Allbirds are thin fabric—so you could clearly see the outline of my big toe tips through the shoe. Bothered me enough that I gave them away.

For the person asking earlier this week where our two way dual language program is. We’re in the NW Chicago suburbs, and several of our surrounding districts have a similar program as well. It’s relatively new in our district but we are beyond happy with the program and the teachers up to this point.
I know several other places have them, including Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, Albuquerque, and Miami although I’m sure there are others. Just google two way dual language for your state.
And just another plug to look deeper than the school ranking scores on Zillow. Our home school scores terribly on Zillow but our program is truly a massive benefit that isn’t captured. I don’t mind that it keeps our property values (and thus taxes) lower but so many people are missing out if they don’t look closely.

I missed this discussion earlier, but I have to say that I’m kind of disappointed that we ended up about 3 blocks away from the school boundary area for a school with a dual language program. By happenstance we ended up zoned for one of the “best” elementary schools in town (read: attended by children of university professors), but if our offers on houses a couple blocks away had been accepted, we would’ve been within the boundaries for a school with lower ranking scores but, in my opinion, a lot more to offer (and closer to our house).
Anon Lawyer says
That sounds like the kind of situation where a transfer request might be successful. In my city it likely would be.
Anon says
Yup. On my city you can’t transfer into the district with the professors kids but you can transfer out. And some people do.
Firsttimemom says
Just made it to my second trimester and announced our pregnancy to family and friends. Now that they know I realize that I haven’t done any planning at all besides getting life insurance. Should I be calling daycares? Should I be doing anything else? If not now, when? I won’t need daycare until February 2023 but not sure the timeline on these things. I’m not in a major city (I live in Rhode Island).
Anon says
Yes get on daycare lists ASAP!! In my area the good ones have yearlong waiting lists.
Anonymous says
Daycare really depends. I’m in northern VA but was coming from NYC, and when I went in 3 months pregnant, they looked at me like I was nuts! Where we live, it’s more common to look into it about 3-6 months before you need the care (not the birth). I would consider getting a will, but that’s not something that has to be done before the baby is born.
Anonymous says
Also in NOVA and several places have a year plus waiting list, although that was pre pandemic and I’m not sure how that has changed.
Anon says
I was in DC and put my first kid on a dozen daycare waitlists at 6 weeks pregnant and she didn’t get off a single one before kindergarten. We ultimately moved out of DC to be near a daycare.

OMG!
Anon says
Many people do or update estate planning before they have kids. Other than that and daycare, just enjoy yourself, maybe take a trip, and spend quality time with friends, your partner, and alone! Will be harder later.
Anon says
Congrats!
I recommend this to all my friends: If you’ve struggled with anxiety or depression in the past, I would try to find a therapist who specializes in perinatal counseling and line them up post birth. Even if you don’t have a history of it, I would consider it since it’s nice to have a neutral third party to talk to. Even the best of births and babies can be an adjustment.

What has been your experience with Functional Medicine? I’m a slightly overweight 40 year old with regular periods that got so heavy with such bad pms and cramps that I need to take off work 3 days a month. My mom didn’t get until menopause until 55, so the idea of this is perimenopause and deal with it for the next 15 years is not something I can handle. I have migraines with aura and other stroke risk factors – so hormonal birth control has never been an option for me.
I went to a functional medicine consult at the Cleveland Clinic and they ran 37 blood tests and had me do a 3 day stool analysis. Nothing popped up. They prescribed lots of expensive supplements and an elimination diet. Im doing it but I feel like they are just trying to take my money.
Can someone convince me it is worth it?

I like the idea of FM. For this issue I ended up finding a doctor who specializes in infertility (not an RE) and he did surgery to remove endometrial tissue (I had a ton). That has resolved many of my issues: heavy periods, migraines, etc. I didn’t get the surgery to alleviate those, but it has been very nice. I’m 36, had surgery when I was 33. I have made zero diet changes: I know I should probably cut carbs, caffeine and alcohol, but I have three small children and so that’s not practical right now. If you want I can give you the name of my specialist: he’s in Houston.
