Even though these cozy socks are called “bed socks,” I probably could wear them all day long.
These cuddly ankle socks feature a ribbed texture and are made from a soft cashmere/wool blend. They come in four match-with-anything colors that are perfect for work-from-home days, weekends, and even the office. While it’d be a bit indulgent, I could wear these all day and night.
Falke’s Cashmere Blend Rib Bed Socks are $35 a pair at Zappos. They come in black, brick, off-white, and silver (really just gray) and are available in sizes 5–7.5 and 8–10.5.

I have a second grade girl who is very strong, and very interested in math. What are some ways to nurture/enrich this interest?
Her teacher thought she might like chess club, but it’s virtual so she pooh-Pooh’d it. She learned to play chess and will play at school sometimes.
Her teacher also gave us some websites with math puzzles and games and she loves those, but I don’t love all the screen time.
Her teacher told us that she and one other kid are well into 3rd grade math and she’s just continuing to feed them work.
When I say she likes math, I mean she lights up when she talks about it and asks DH and me to give her math equations in her spare time. She wanted “a math birthday party” and can’t wait for the higher grades when “math is going to get super fun.”
I think part of it is that she likes being really good at something. She must have gotten this from her dad’s side of the family because she sure didn’t get it from me ;).
Separately, she plays a million sports, and does theater and dance stuff. She’s athletic but she’s much better at math than lacrosse!

Art of Problem Solving is geared towards these kids.

I don’t understand why math screen time is bad, unless the games are lame.
Anonymous says
It’s not bad, I just don’t want more screen-based option :)

I will say that I loved math as a kid and was really good at it. Playing Math Blasters absolutely enhanced my love of math. My parents didn’t live screen time but embraced it because it really supported my love of math (and my love of being awesome at math).

Omg math blasters and number munchers were two of my absolute favorite games as a kid.
Has she tried coding at all? The logic of it might appeal to her math brain. Maybe check out code ninjas or a robotics club. There are little robotics kits at craft stores, target etc if you want a do-at-home thing.

In addition to chess, my similar aged math-loving daughter loves the board games Mastermind, Labyrinth, Battleship, and Settlers of Catan (adult version), Ticket to Ride (adult version), Clue (kids version), and Dragonwood. Sleeping Queens was also a hit for a while.
She also absolutely loves Sudoku and does several puzzles before bed at night. We also keep a Sudoku book in the car.
Snap circuits are also a hit.

Ah! Op here, and this is a great list. She is doing Sudoku in school when she finishes her work and it’s one of the games she plays on her iPad.
She loves ticket to ride and sleeping queens (so does my 6 y/o!). I didn’t know there was a kid version of clue- we just play adult clue together and it’s her fave board game. I will get right on battleship!
I think she’d like Catan too but it’s hard to play with her bc we have a bunch of mother kids that are too young and it isn’t a great 3 player game.

Have you been to the Museum of Math in NYC? That sounds like something she would love if you’re considering a trip to that area any time soon.
Anonymous says
NO!! And now it’s on my list for our next nyc trip. Thank you!
She plays tennis and loved the tennis musurim in Newport. This is going to blow her mind.

I LOVE this. It also sounds like me at that age. Like others, sudoku is good. There are also a number of fiction books for that age group that have a bit of a math theme, like The Westing Game and Phantom Tollbooth if I recall correctly. I think my parents got me any sort of similar book and lots of logic puzzle books. I also played a lot with tangrams and my soma cube (I actually made the soma cube with my elementary school class out of little blocks and still have it on my desk at work). I also found music and baking to work some of my math interest as a child as well – particularly when I wanted to change a recipe around.

We taught her fractions couple weeks ago because she was baking and we needed to redouble the recipe. This is a good reminder to keep letting her practice.

Would she enjoy rock climbing? Each indoor route is basically a puzzle for your body to solve. My engineer husband loves to climb, especially when there are new routes at his gym. He just stares at the holds for several minutes, working out in his head how he’s going to finish the route before he ever touches the wall.

What a great idea! I don’t know if we can fit another sport activity in but this might be something to try out this summer. Her summer camp has rock climbing and she loved it and was quite good at it apparently.

Logic problem workbooks! I loved these as a kid. Also, have you talked with her teacher / school about the possibility of her going up a year in math? My kids have done this and it’s helped keep them a bit more challenged.
sweatpants? says
Posting this late, but what are your favorite sweatpants for very thin kids who are of average/tall height.
EDAnon says
The best ones I found were Target Cat & Jack but my kid is too big for toddler sizes. I would love a new option. Gap stuff tends to be too big.

Vent: My daughter takes lactulose, which is a lot like Miralax (an osmotic, non-stimulant laxative) except it’s only available with a prescription. We’ve tried a lot of different constipation remedies including Miralax and nothing works for her except this. Everything I’ve found online says it’s perfectly safe to be on long term, although effectiveness may diminish over time. But my pediatrician is treating it like it’s oxycodone! She won’t give us more than 5 days worth at at time. It’s the biggest PITA. Every 5 days I have to call her doctor, beg the nurse to refill the prescription, then go to the pharmacy and pick it up. I’ve asked over and over again if they can give us a bigger quantity and they just keep saying “no, this is what the doctor is comfortable prescribing.” We’re going out of the country next week so we need more than a 5 day supply, and of course my doctor is on vacation (side vent: My kid’s doctor is always on vacation! I don’t know how it’s possible but I swear literally a third of the time I call the office she’s on vacation). I finally convinced the pharmacist to give us the refill in advance if we pay out of pocket but I felt like an addict begging for supply. It should not be this hard to get such an innocuous medication.
anonMD says
This seems crazy. I’m a physician, and we commonly prescribe a 3-month supply of lactulose for adults with cirrhosis. Can you ask the pediatrician why she can’t prescribe larger quantities?
Anonymous says
1) this is completely ridiculous and 2) my pediatrician was always on vacation and then it turned out she was pregnant and calling out sick but her staff was calling it vacation. The whole thing was weird. I hope this isn’t the case for you…I think?
Anon says
I think she’s 50ish, so very unlikely she’s pregnant but I appreciate the reminder that it could be a chronic health issue or something like that.
Anonymous says
I would find another doctor. A pediatric gastroenterologist, preferably. Or even try an online pharmacy with a zoom visit with someone who has prescribing privileges. A copy of her file from the doctor or pharmacy should help with either. Or check if it’s OTC in Canada and order 90 days from there.
Honestly it sounds like the doctor doesn’t believe your kid has a problem and is trying to make it hard enough for you that you give up. So maybe find a new pediatrician.

I am now experiencing the disappearing comments issue on the main page, not just here. I was reading through comments and refreshed the page. Suddenly a whole bunch more comments with replies to those comments appeared. The presence of the replies tells me that other people were able to read those comments before I could.
Anon says
I don’t have that issue on the main page. But everything I post over there goes straight to m0deration.
