Something on your mind? Chat about it here. This flat by TOMS must have been around for a while now, but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it before. It’s a bestseller at Zappos, and it has that perfect, casual, “not trying too hard but still stylish and put-together” look. I like the gently pointed toe, and the price is great as well — it’s $75–$84, depending on color. It’s also available at Amazon and Nordstrom. TOMS Jutti Flat Psst: Sephora’s Beauty Insider Event starts today! Those with Insider status get 10% off with code YAYINSIDER; with VIB status, 15% off (YAYVIB); and with Rouge status, 15% off (YAYROUGE). The sale ends on April 23. Ugh. I think we need to use a suppository on my kid this weekend. I posted earlier this week or last week that she had started withholding. We gave her half a dose of Miralax yesterday (nothing), and will do so again today, but she hasn’t gone since Saturday. She has been saying, “don’t come out, poopy!” I feel like she’s going to be traumatized. Any advice?

Look up magnesium citrate….. it’s prob an active ingredient in Miralax but maybe stronger. A friend used it on their 5yo when nothing else worked. Good luck!
CPA Lady says
Agree w anon– You may need some kind of actual laxative to make her go. That is not what Miralax does. This is where magnesium citrate or a suppository would come in. I personally have never used a suppository on my kid because (TMI alert) my parents used them on me and I hated it and felt very violated by the experience.
Is there some reason you gave her a half dose of Miralax rather than a full one? Miralax is not a stimulant laxative, it’s a stool softener that draws water into the bowel. It doesn’t make you go (unless you take so much you get the trots), it makes it easier and less painful to go. It’s not like a laxative where you give one dose and boom problem solved, it’s something you use for a while while the child learns not to withhold. You may need to do a laxative for the initial clean out, and then miralax to keep it easy to go long enough for her to trust that it won’t hurt.
I know I probably sound like a lunatic broken record, but I dealt with this issue with my daughter for a solid 18+ months of pure hell and I really blame myself for not being aggressive enough. I kept on trying to do the bare minimum half dose thing and it really dragged out a problem that resolved very quickly once I got aggressive with treating it.

Thanks. Those are my concerns with the suppository as well – that she’ll be traumatized and feel violated. But she also needs to go! She is very uncomfortable, in her words. I agree that at this point we probably need to use a laxative to get to zero, and then start using Miralax as an every day item.
As for the half dose…the nurse at our doctor’s office told us we could give her Miralax in accordance with the directions on the box, but we gave her a half dose to start because we didn’t know how her body would react.

Prunes! They even have chocolate covered ones. And they’re delicious.

We did a lot of smoothies with prunes when our toddler had an issue. Tried to use pear juice for the liquid too, which normally I am against. But desperate times, desperate measures!

Don’t remember if you checked with your daycare/preschool but sometimes kids go when they are there.
DH was convinced one of our twins was constipated but he just goes every second day at daycare. His brother will only go at home and goes every day.
Pears, peaches, plums, prunes have always worked for my kids. Try a smoothie with some magnesium and peaches and probiotic yoghurt.
Anon in NYC says
Yeah, unfortunately she’s withholding at school too. I think we’ll have to pick up some magnesium citrate too.
Anon says
Our ped’s office told us to avoid all dairy including yogurt for constipation. Probiotics/yogurt are for diarrhea issues and can exacerbate constipation.
