For summer trips with lots of walking, ordinary sandals just won’t cut it anymore. These Vionic slingbacks might get me from amusement park opening to closing in one piece.
Featuring “VIO MOTION” technology to support arches, these sandals have adjustable straps for a perfect fit, polyurethane lining to keep your feet cool, and a cushioned yet flexible footbed for all-day comfort. They come in both medium and wide widths and sizes from 5–13.
Vionic’s Reese Slingbacks are $110 at Zappos and come in four colors. (My choice is the pictured “oatmeal beige,” which looks like linen.)

Swim class dilemma says
DS is almost 4 but we haven’t done swim classes since he was a baby. We tried a session at Goldfish Swim School but he would not go in the pool without me. Parents weren’t allowed in the pool so we stood poolside the entire class. He would probably do better in a beginner class where I was in the pool with him for a few weeks, but Goldfish doesn’t allow parents in the pool for his age group. YMCA has an adult-child swim class for 3 year olds, but it is on Saturdays in the summer which is tough for us – we’re out of town a lot on the weekends. So should I enroll him in the YMCA class even though we will miss a few sessions, or should I enroll him in Goldfish which is on weeknights and hope he gets in the pool eventually?

I would wait until he’s comfortable getting in the pool alone, even if it’s not until he’s 4 or even 5. There isn’t a lot of value in lessons where the child won’t leave the parent’s arms, and older kids learn everything much faster, so it often ends up being a much less complicated process if you just wait until the kid is really ready.

Yeah, because of Covid we didn’t do swim lessons until my daughter was seven. She picked it up in after three half-hour private lessons. Versus most kids I know who started earlier…they got there, but it took a lot longer.

This. Even kids who are enthusiastic about the water don’t really learn to swim until they are at least 5 or 6 anyway. The 4-year-olds who can “swim” can just paddle frantically for a few yards with an adult in arm’s reach.

+1 When they are ready, they will pick it up relatively quickly. If they are not ready, you are paying lots of money for glorified bath time

Is your DS worried about the water or about the stranger or the atmosphere? My kid was 100% fine with water, but didn’t want to take a class from a stranger in the midst of swimming chaos. My kids would get very upset by the chaos and noise of an indoor pool. We also had issues with having a different instructor almost every week at Goldfish. The water wasn’t our problem, but other things.
Are there other options? We hired a teenager at our summer pool for private lessons and that went well. There’s also a few private swim programs near us that rent space at the county pools that are more flexible, calmer, and where you can get the same instructor every week.
