After dealing with sunglasses strewn about the house all summer, I’ve finally gotten myself in gear to find an organizing solution. I ordered this last week and it arrived a few days ago. My husband and I installed it on the inside of my front hall closet, and I love it! We finally have a single place to keep all of our sunglasses right near the door that doesn’t take up any extra space and is functional.
One of the reviewers on Amazon said that she uses it to keep masks, and I think that’s also a great idea. Just be sure you order the “Grey Large” or “Pink Large” styles, as the others are for hanging glasses and wouldn’t work for masks.
The organizer is $11.99 at Amazon. Wall-Mounted Sunglasses Organizer

What's the going rate for bar mitzvah checks these days? says
I have a couple of extended family members who have bar/bat mitzvahs coming up. My and my friends’ kids are all much younger, so these are my first since I was closer in age to the kids. Could anyone weigh in on what the appropriate amount for a financially-secure, grown-up relative to send to these awesome kids?
Anon says
There are huge regional differences. Where are you?
anonamama says
Thought this would be worth sharing. I once read, in a local Moms group, someone say, for baptism, graduation, wedding, “milestone’ type events, just $100. Clean and easy. Can’t go wrong.

Jews usually do multiples of 18 bc 18 symbolizes life. As a kid when i was a guest if i was bringing a gift card it would usually be for $36 or maybe $54. My parents hated giving money and instead bought gifts.
Anonymous says
In Jewish culture you typically give money gifts in multiples of 18 because it’s considered auspicious. $108 is my go-to bar mitzvah gift but I’m in the Midwest and don’t run in crazy rich circles. More is definitely common in NYC.
anne-on says
+1 – something given in multiples of 8 around the $100 range is the default in the tri-state area. I’ve also seen a lot of check paired with a physical gift that is ‘en vouge’ for teenagers – anything from a purse (coach’/kate spade used to be the brands of choice in this age group) to ‘adult’ jewelry. I’ll date myself but the tiffany’s bracelets/charms were hands down the most requested items when my friends were bat mitzvahed. The Hermes H bracelets (I know, I know) are SUPER popular in our HCOL area for sweet 16/bat mitzvah/graduation gifts.
Anonymous says
Man, in my circles in the 90s the average was definitely $18 unless for a close relative. I guess $18 in 1993 is a lot more now though!
Anonymous says
It sounded like they are fairly close relatives though? I agree you don’t do $108 for every random kid whose bat mitzvah you get invited to, but I don’t think it’s uncommon to give a niece or nephew or cousin that amount.
Anonymous says
Chiming in late. I went to a zillion bar/bat mitzvahs in 1995-1997. Fairfield County CT. I generally did $56 + a small gift. For my BFF I did a Tiffany necklace.
My family was not Jewish. We were probably on the average side of gifts, but I seriously went to 25++ of these things and it was what they could reasonably do.

Have any of you been through the NYC Private Kindergarten process? Obviously they process is different and weird this year but if you have any advice…I’ll take it. Particularly on these friggin essays and also what to wear to the parent interview?
NYCer says
We did it a few years ago (my daughter is in 1st grade now). It was fine. Does your child go to a preschool in NYC right now? Generally, the preschools have someone who helps with exmissions. If you are nervous about the process, definitely get some insight and advice from that person.
I wore work clothes to the interview. I can’t remember exactly what, most likely a dress and black tights with ankle boots since the weather was cold.
Anon says
What’s the difference between size 4 vs 4T or 5 vs 5T? I’m assuming it’s something to do with the length vs width but is there really a huge difference? Buying a zip up sweatshirt for my toddler but would ideally like to get two seasons out of it.
Anonymous says
I think it’s really brand dependent; I haven’t noticed an overall difference in cut or sizing between things marked T or not.
Anon says
In my experience they are a little wider and a little longer; not huge, but definitely noticeable. I’d say a 4 is just a bit smaller than a 5T (and maybe wider?)
Anon says
At least in bottoms, the T usually is cut to include a diaper I think. I found that they were about equivalent in size, with the non-T clothes cut a little slimmer as well because they assume the toddler belly is gone. Oh how I miss the toddler clothes. The “big girl” clothes are just so grown up!
Anonymous says
IMO the T sizes had more belly room (like maternity wear). Initially, in bottoms, it may also accommodate a diaper or pull-up. I had tall kids who were thin but both had baby bellies, one for a long time. They needed the T sizes but a kid who is more straight up and down probably doesn’t need the T. Smaller kindergarteners may wear a 5 (supposed to track years) but my kids were so tall that they wore 5Ts while still being more toddler-shaped.
Anonymous says
Yeah my 2 year old is in 5T and I’m not sure what we will do when she outgrows it since the slim-fit sizes are unlikely to fit. She still wears a diaper and has a big toddler belly.
Anon says
My kid was like yours. She just turned 3 (still has her adorable toddler belly, although it gets smaller every month) and is in 6-7, borderline 8. We stick to brands that are cut wider (gap, hanna) and look for regular (not slim fit) girls clothes.
Anonymous says
Wow. My kid was in size 7-8 in sixth grade!
Anonymous says
Wow! I have a 93% kid for height and 80% for weight. She’s the tallest girl in her grade. She’s newly 7 and a 6x. 7/8 stuff is crazy long on her.

Oooo even before the description I was thinking this would be great for the hall closet. I have a net bag in there for dirty masks but haven’t quite worked out where everyone’s clean masks should go. Usinig half for sunglasses and half for masks could be great.
CCLA says
We use one of those pottery barn command center pieces with hooks, I think intended for keys or jackets but we use one for keys and the rest for masks. Everyone gets a hook where a few clean masks are hung.
anne-on says
I posted earlier about cabidor but I LOVE ours in our hall closet. Lots of adjustable shelves so it can be wallets/sunglasses/water bottles/masks/etc. My husband likes to store his sunglasses in the case, so the normal sleeves aren’t a good option for us.
EB0220 says
Can anyone recommend nightgowns that are of similar quality to Boden? We LOVE Boden PJs because they are so soft and last forever, but the print options are slim this year. Has anyone found nightgowns that are similar? I was thinking of trying Primary.

My husband is taking the day off to do yard work. It is blissfully quiet indoors. I knew he talked loudly and had a lot of meetings, but now I realize just how loud he is all day long. Even the dog is quiet–usually his calls inspire her to bark. I miss my office.

how does children’s place quality compare to carters? i am looking for something that is not nec best quality at all, but since children’s place is less expensive i did not know if the quality is much worse?
Clementine says
Similar. Lots of shirts with weird slogans, but stuff like their solid color school uniform pants are great and on par with Carter’s stuff. Husband thinks the fabric seems less prone to pilling, FWIW.
DLC says
I feel like Children’s Place used to be really durable, but in the last 5 years or so they’ve become more skewed towards fast fashion. I have Children’s Place things that my oldest (8 yr old) kid wore that still have lots of life in them, even though we got them second hand, but the stuff I’ve bought recently starts to look tired really quickly.
Carter’s I’ve found to hold up more consistently.
rosie says
I think it’s comparable. I actually like CP stuff a lot and they have cute PJ prints if you ignore the super-gendered ones (but annoying to have to go through boys and girls separately), but seems like a lot of their shirts are pretty gendered/weird slogans like Clementine said. You can get some good deals there and the rewards program is easy.
AwayEmily says
I don’t think it’s awful, but honestly I find Target much better than Carters, Old Navy, or Childrens Place. I get pretty much all my basics from Target now.
Anonymous says
I don’t shop at Carter’s or CP but I think Old Navy quality is great. I like it more than Target and even Primary, especially when you factor in price.
anon says
I have always had issues with Old Navy fading and pilling. :( The styles are so cute, but I don’t feel like the quality is great.
AwayEmily says
Same. I still buy a lot from ON because they are the cutest of the bunch (I feel like they have such good color palettes for girls — nice jewel tones rather than the pastels & neons of Carters) but the quality is very meh.
anon says
I’m a big fan of Target for shirts that don’t have excessively girly or macho slogans.
Anon says
thanks all. i’m literally only trying to buy a navy zip up sweatshirt. i refuse to buy shirts with slogans or lots of glittery graphics
Anonymous says
H &M is great for solid color basics.
Anonymous says
+1 – the H&M basics hold up great. (for a fast growing only child). One of the places i can consistently find non-logo hoodies.
I prefer carters to CP.
Anonymous says
We have this one in gray, and I am very impressed with the quality.

OP: My experience is that CP is the same quality-wise as Carter’s. Both were better about 5+ years ago, though. :(
anon says
Another kids’ clothing question: My 6YO is into dresses, not t-shirts. Will not wear them. I’d like to find some warmer fall ones. Maybe it’s too early, but I’m striking out at Carter’s and Target. (Her size always seems to be out of stock.) She will wear Primary leggings but says the dresses are “too boring.” Sigh. She is the opposite of me in that way. I love a good solid. :)
Anonymous says
try princess awesome or svaha? They don’t have sweater dresses but I think they have long sleeve ones.
Or try boden for sweater dresses – they have good sales pretty frequently
Anon Lawyer says
Gap Kids and Gap Factory had some sweater dresses if that might appeal.
NYCer says
+1. Gap and Old Navy both have lots of dresses with longs sleeves.
Anon says
look at zara or hanna anderson. we actually live in a warm climate and have found some of the zara dresses to be too warm for us, but would probably be perfect for you. i think old navy has some as well
Anon says
I’ve had good luck on Amazon with Spotted Zebra and some other brands for long sleeve dresses.
Anon says
Hanna has long sleeve dresses. You could also try gap for sweater dresses.
Redux says
Lots of fun patterned long sleeve dresses at H&M!
DLC says
Will your kid wear a short sleeved dress layered over a long sleeve shirt or turtleneck? We do this a lot to get more mileage out of the summer dresses.
