A Royal Doulton 1815 Wine GlassesI may be a little crazy with fears of broken glass around the kitchen whilst little beings on the loose. In the past, when we’ve broken a wine glass, my husband and I have tried to divide and conquer: one of us keeps the kiddos away from the glass (if said kiddos are up, that is, in which case it’s usually Murphy’s Law that at least one of them is having a meltdown because they can’t go and lick the kitchen floor right that instant) — while the other one sweeps the floor, vacuums the floor, and finally goes over the floor with a wet paper towel and/or Lysol wipe. Fun times! We’ve done our best to sidestep the issue by switching almost entirely to unbreakable stuff, like these unbreakable glasses from Barney’s that I stumbled on during a sale many moons ago. They’re dishwasher safe, slightly fun, and hey, you get to skip the “crawling around on the floor fearing for your child’s life” portion of the evening. They’re $8-$9 at Barneys. MARC NEWSON Unbreakable Highball Glass P.S. One mother confided in me recently that her family of five eats almost entirely off paper plates. I kind of love this strategy, at least for these few years with small kids.

I’m looking for Halloween costumes for my one year old. He likely won’t want to wear anything too big, and I would rather it not be hugely bulky and warm because we’ll mostly be indoors. I’d love to get some that are more romper or pajama weight.

Where do you all find baby costumes that aren’t huge/elaborate?

Question for potty training mommas! My mom mentioned that she had a kids book for me to read about potty training when I was a toddler. Do such books exist? Suggestions? Thank you!

We are thinking of getting our 2 year old daughter a balance bike and I’d like to learn more about the type of bike we should get. Are there any resources online that you used that were helpful? Is it best to just go to a store to test some out? My fear is that we will drive all the way out to a store and will be greeted by an indifferent/unknowledgeable store clerk.

Skinny-toddler clothing help: Skinny 15-month-old needs pants for fall/ winter. His problem is that while the length is right, the waist is too big (and those fake inoperable drawstrings! they drive me nuts!). Children’s Place is ok, but they seem to have changed their 18-24m sizing recently and the waist is now too big. I am wary of going down to 12-18m in case we run into the same issue – then we have pants that are too wide and too short. Any suggestions for other brands? Looking for everyday daycare garments, not Janie & Jack fancy/ price point.

I hate PlayDoh. It is the worst.

Any ideas for an alternative that is cheap and toddler friendly (i.e. doesn’t deconstruct into a crumbly mess seemingly minutes after hitting the open air)? Recipes for homemade stuff or recos for like a modeling clay or something?

Anyone have a toddler that bites his or herself?

My newly minted two year old bites herself on the forearm when she’s mad — she’s been doing this with increasing frequency over the last week. She’ll get frustrated when we tell her no and she just bites down on her arm and look up at us, hard enough to leave marks for a few minutes at least! She’ll also pinch herself. She was/is a biter of other people, but it’s slowed down in the last few months. She pinches us (DH and me) when she’s mad and we’re holding her.

Needless to say, it’s pretty disturbing — I’m trying not to react when she does it, or just calmly say ‘don’t bite yourself’. I made the mistake of Googling and the results were scary, but not well sourced — serious anger issues, major stresses, autism. She just moved to a new classroom at daycare, so that could be it.

We have her two year checkup in a week or so, so I’ll check with the doctor then. But in the meantime I wanted to check with the hive mind (aka, not babycenter….)

Is there an equivalent to Rent the Runway for kids? I need to get my son (3 y.o.) some dress clothes for an upcoming wedding, but I cringe at the thought of spending $100+ on something that he will truly only wear once before he grows out of it. Google tells me there are a few options for little girls, but I haven’t found anything for little boys. Any ideas?

Looking for book recommendations for a 3 year old. Thanks!

Invited to a kid’s bday party and were told “no gifts.” Seems like it would be pretty obtuse to bring a gift except that these are the same people who bring a gift whenever someone invites them to a party and says “no gifts.”

So quick poll: would you bring a small gift anyway? Is there another solution I’m missing?

These are cute, but I hate eating off paper plates and drinking out of plastic cups. It’s so wasteful, but also just seems sort of depressing unless you’re at an outdoor BBQ (and even then…). I realize a sink full of dirty dishes to wash can be depressing, too, but personally I’ll take dishes to wash and an aesthetically charming set of plates and wine glasses over a garbage bag full of soggy Dixie plates and solo cups any day.
