It always happens: a site is having a great sale, and I find one of the few pieces that ISN’T on sale… sigh. Fortunately, this dress is pretty affordable to begin with at $129, and I like the dark brown pattern — it almost has a tweed/crosshatch effect going on, which is quite nice. I like the high neckline, the three-quarter length sleeves, and the ruched side. It is machine washable, and available in misses, petites, woman, and woman petites sizes. This looks like a great dress. I have a machine-washable Talbots jersey dress from six or seven years ago that is still in great shape. Now that I’m going back to the office (no more working in T-shirts and leggings, sigh), I’m realizing how many of my work clothes are dry clean only/not baby-friendly. I will be keeping an eye out for discounts on this one!

I’d want to see the pattern in person, but I really like this dress in theory. Nice pick!

I bought a few dresses in a similar style and was wondering if they could be appropriate for court with a blazer over them? I know I could wear them to work, depositions, mediations etc, but I’m not sure about court appearances. Granted I’ve seen people wear a wide variety of (crazy) outfits to court but I’m hoping to not look like I’m underdressed. Most of my appearances are state court in California if that helps.

I also practice in CA (primarily in federal court but occasionally in state court). As you know, people wear all sorts of inappropriate things to superior court. That said, I would not feel comfortable wearing anything but a traditional suit for an appearance. I may be overly conservative though, e.g., when I was 9 months pregnant I felt underdressed going to court wearing black maternity pants and a non-maternity black blazer that I couldn’t button.
Lyssa says
I agree with this (though not in CA). It’s probably acceptable, but I personally wouldn’t wear a non-suiting dress to court (unless I was pregnant).
MGM says
I am just back from maternity leave and not quite fitting in all my old suits so I was hoping these dresses might work in the meantime. But I think you’re right and I’d rather not feel like I’m sticking out because of my clothes. Not sure which county you practice in but I’ve noticed that Orange County is much more lax with superior court fashion than the LA County courts.
sfg says
Once I saw a female attorney appear in LA Superior in a black dress and a hot pink ruffled cardigan.
I have seen senior female partners appear in CA state court in suiting-quality separates, like a tweed-y jacket and coordinating slacks. That’s probably the furthest acceptable deviation I’ve seen.
Tunnel says
You should visit Philadelphia State Court. I once saw an attorney wearing FISHNETS. I kid you not. I would wear a dress like this with a blazer for non-judge appearances (e.g. case management conferences outside the presence of judge). If a judge is present, I wear a full suit. When pregnant, I say wear whatever fits and makes you professional.

I’ve practiced in both LA and SD and have occasionally appeared in OC and random places in the Central Valley. SD is notorious for attorneys in flip flops, so I could see how OC could be more casual than LA.

I’ve seen men that look like they slept in their suits for weeks they were so wrinkled. Also a few older women in sweaters and slacks (and these sweaters were like crazy cat lady sweaters, NOT nice quality). And there are always a few younger women that are wearing stiletto heels with too short skirts.
sfg says
Oh yeah, at my very first court appearance, across the aisle from me was a male lawyer without a jacket or tie, wrinkled shirt unbuttoned a little too far, and his pants were torn open at the seam, below the pocket.
nanny says
Nanny question – how many weeks of vacation do you give your nanny? And do you require that some or all of them are at the same time you take vacation? What about sick days?
ECR says
We used a nanny agency to find our nanny. The agency told us that two weeks of paid vacation per year is standard, with a request that at least one week of vacation overlap with the family’s vacation. They also told us that 5 personal/sick days per year is standard. This does not include the usual holidays (Thanksgiving, Xmas, etc.).
That said, I much prefer our nanny to take planned chunks of vacation than a personal day here or there. Our understanding is that we will give generous vacation and that she will try to minimize personal days, reserving them for times when she or her family is sick.
Anastasia says
We also gave our nanny two weeks with the stipulation that one week overlap our family’s vacation. She got federal holidays and the day after Thanksgiving off, plus 3 personal/sick days (and random days off if the government closed for weather, since both DH and I are feds). She was really good about only taking personal days when she really needed them and giving us plenty of notice if possible, and we were pretty flexible about coming home a little early so she could go to medical appointments here and there without counting it against her personal time. She wanted to travel to her home country with her vacation, so having a big 2 week chunk was best for her, and we coordinated a mutually agreeable time so our vacations would overlap.

I’m at 11 weeks and have lost 5-6 pounds. I’m overweight/obese already, so no one’s concerned except me. I have an anti-nausea prescription, which helps me to eat more but generally the thought of food grosses me out, and then there’s the heartburn…. still too tired to exercise? Any thoughts or experience? I did not lose weight my 1st pregnancy, but my weight was more normal then.
Meg Murry says
I lost weight my first trimester with kid #1 – mainly because I was skipping dinner to sleep and many nights, really queasy, and I think I had been getting a lot more calories from alcohol pre-pregnancy than I realized.
My doctor was mildly concerned only that he wanted to make sure I wasn’t actively trying to lose weight or prevent from gaining – but when I told him what I said above he was fine with it.
I wouldn’t be too worried if your doctor isn’t. Ask him/her at your next appointment. And try not to get too hungry – for me, nibbling all day was the only way to keep nausea at bay
sfg says
I was at a “normal” weight for my height when I got pregnant and lost weight (4-5 lbs) between my 8 and 12 week appointments. Doctor said nothing – and I was gaining by my 16 week appointment, so I assume if there was a problem, the doctor would let me know. It was really hard for me to eat much early on, and I also think I got a lot of liquid calories from wine. Also did not feel well enough to exercise more than walking (and I wasn’t walking much) until around 15 weeks. My food aversions started going away around 16 weeks.
My doctor was most concerned that I could keep down fluids and that I was managing to keep vitamins down (thank you, gummy vitamins). Hang in there!
hoola hoopa says
I lost weight (4-8 lb) in 1st tri when I was at a normal weight but higher end and could stand to lose that much had I not been pg. Doctor made sure that I wasn’t so nauseous that I couldn’t eat at all (I wasn’t) and otherwise was unconcerned. I started gaining once the nausea subsided and ended the pg with the recommended amount of weight gain.
ParalegalNC says
I also lost weight the first half of my pregnancy due to food aversions/nausea and lack of alcohol calories. I was a normal weight to start & ended up with a normal weight gain.
