Any advice for gently resetting mealtime in your house? I have a 4 year old & a 2 year old and since the holidays things have been a mess.
A lot of this is on my husband & I for way too often letting the kids snack on whatever so they’re not hungry at meals & then doing a lot of short order cooking to make sure they eat something before bed. My 4 year old is a very picky eater but both kids have (unsurprisingly) become more picky over the last few months. My husband doesn’t see this as nearly as much of a problem as I do but is happy-ish to go along with trying to get things back on track. Admittedly the backsliding has been because this is a busy season for us & this has been an easy ball to drop.
I care a lot more about the “culture” of eating, e.g. wanting family meals to be happy experiences & don’t want to overly police what anyone is eating. But … we can’t carry on like this. Help!
Can I get a sanity check for a 4 year old’s birthday party that I am hosting, if folks don’t mind. I’m expecting about 15 kids (most age 3 or 4 but a few older and younger siblings) and a parent or sometimes 2 per kid. Party is at our house this weekend 10:30am-Noonish. I’m going to have bagels, cream cheese, fruit, coffee and seltzers (ostensibly for the grownups but I will get enough for kids to eat too) and then pirates booty, fruit bars, juice boxes, mini water bottles and we’ll do cake around 11:30 or so. I have plates, napkins, cutlery (cups will come with the coffee). I had thought about getting a few quiches as well. Do I need anything else? Anything I’m forgetting?
The loose plan is a craft table upstairs so we can keep an eye on it and then free play in the very large basement for the kids. And grownups can generally hang out on the main level. We have a big house but I’m sure it will still feel full, loud and chaotic, but that is what a birthday party is supposed to be.
Any recommendations for pajamas for a toddler that aren’t skin tight? The U.S. regulations requiring that are so dumb and I’d be willing to pay more for something imported. We really prefer zip styles (rather than sweats and a shirt) but can’t find a decent option that isn’t too snug. Sizing up just results in super long arms and legs so doesn’t work well. Any brand recs?
Anyone else have a tough time determining whether your kid is sick enough for sick days? Mine says her stomach and throat hurt and I let her stay home but now she seems fine. I’ve heard the only if you’re actually vomiting rule and maybe I should be following that . . . .
Where should I buy a new couch? Thanks in advance.
We went to visit my son’s new school today and I feel quietly optimistic. It felt so calm, the classrooms have doors versus open plan, so fewer distractions. We heard 6 different languages at drop off. There is a proper outdoor space and the head teacher wants them outside playing versus our current head who is obsessed with preserving the carpets. There is no such thing as a perfect school but I just feel like this is going to be so much better. He doesn’t start til after Easter but they’ve invited us back for an afternoon with his new class before Easter break.
An unsolicited book recommendation: The Girls Survive series. My 8 year old recently discovered them at the library and apparently there are 35 of them! They are a bit shorter/easier to read than the I Survived series, which she has sped through. Some stories are the same (like the Titanic) but she just finished one about the Hartford Circus Fire, which I had never heard of. Since book rec requests pop up occasionally, I wanted to post this one while it was top of mind.
Oh boy, my almost 4yo had a tantrum to end all tantrums on the way out the door this morning and I lost my cool. We gave ourselves some breathing room and hugged it out, but man does my heart feel guilty. I am arriving to work emotionally exhausted before my day even begins. Anyone else ever felt this way? How do you move past it?
My SIL, who has no children, texted me a detailed itinerary of what I should do with my kids for today’s snow day.
I miss the perfect parent I was before I had children.
