I would suggest that a robe a size up from your pre-preg size would be more versatile than a maternity robe. It would fit better postpartum and would still likely be large enough for most of pregnancy.
Anonymous says
I wouldn’t even size up, because that will make the robe too big across the shoulders. I wore my pre-pregnancy robe throughout pregnancy and afterwards.
TheElms says
I think this really depends how you carry. My current robe is not going to fit much longer and I’m only 6 months pregnant. If I want a robe to actually close properly over my belly for the rest of my pregnancy I think I need a maternity one. I’m short though and seemingly carrying an enormous baby, so YMMV. This seems like a good option for a Christmas present. I wouldn’t normally spend the money on it, but it would be nice to have.
Anonymous says
I am petite and had a basketball belly and was still able to wear my non-maternity terrycloth bathrobe the whole time, but this robe would be a cute way to show off a bump. I definitely would not have wanted a non-maternity robe in a larger size.
Anon says
I think this depends how you react to pregnancy. I grew a bunch up top (from an A cup to something very big), which slowly went down again as I weaned. My pre-preg size for everything stopped fitting by 2nd tri, but not because of my belly. I needed to size up in my robe, as well as non-maternity blazers.
FP says
I own this robe and can confirm it’s just so stretchy and easy that I wore the same size for most of my pregnancy and after. I gained 50 lbs and so at the end of the pregnancy it was more open on the bottom but it’s long enough and stretchy enough that it worked. I have lost all of the weight and still use it regularly, 3 years post-baby.
Kiwi Crate reco? says
Thinking about holiday gifts for K-age son from grandparents. I think he’d love a Kiwi Crate subscription (he’s super into building and science/STEM stuff) but would love firsthand accounts. Any other similar subscriptions you all like? Thanks!
Anonymous says
We had a couple of single Kiwi Crates. They are pretty good, but I wouldn’t subscribe. If you are busy or a particular kit just doesn’t have a lot of appeal, the kits can pile up and create guilt (we have had this happen with non-subscription science and craft kits received as birthday and holiday gifts). Some kids may require assistance. And most kids will be reluctant to let go of what they make, so your house will quickly fill up with the completed projects.
Spirograph says
Yes, our kits (Little Passports, which the kids and I really like, it’s just a time thing) pile up and create guilt. That said, I’ve found Kiwi Crates are really good quality. My sister and I do the Maker Kits together and I feel like they’re worth the price, they don’t feel cheap at all. Whether or not I successfully execute my artistic vision is something else, of course…
Anonymous says
Not a subscription, but Snap Circuits is perfect for this age.
Anonymous says
Hmm…I agree with the caveat that my kids are 5 and 8 and only really do snap circuits well together OR with an adult and the 5 year old.
Anon says
Not a subscription, but Learning Resources would be ideal for this. So many options for fun science/coding/engineering toys that would be perfectly age appropriate for him.
AwayEmily says
We like the Kiwi Crates. Agreed that the crafts do tend to clutter up the house after awhile but we just gently “retire” the old things after a few months (tbh they usually break by then anyway). We keep them stored away as a “treat” — they are also great to do with grandparents, babysitters, etc. In an ideal world I’d, like, buy a “science with kids” book and get all the stuff for the experiments and do it that way (less waste), but that’s just not going to happen, so Kiwi Crate is a great solution. Oh, and we always send photos of the creation process to the grandparents who gave it to us, and they love it.
A says
Agreed–we really like the Kiwi Crate for our 7 year old and just ordered a subscription of the Koala Crate for our 3 year old. Looking ahead at another long Covid winter, having something to do on a Saturday afternoon that includes all of the pieces is a big win.
anon says
Kiwi Crates (plus creations) add up to taking up a fair amount of space if you don’t have a ton of storage space. My experience with them was that a kindergartener needs a fair amount of grownup help with the kits. I also don’t love that the kits are prescriptive (build an x) rather than open-ended. That said, they can be fun.
I’d much prefer something like LittleBits that is more open-ended and that has to be taken apart to build something new.

I know we’ve had several book recc threads, but would love to start a new one. My question is about the kindergarten-early elementary age years. My six year old is tearing through Dragon Masters series and would love some idea of what we should read next (together– he can’t read independently yet, just started K). I despise Magic Treehouse but have really enjoyed Dragon Masters, and both series seem at a good level for him. He and his four-year-old sister both like Princess in Black, but we’ve finished those as well. Any suggestions?
Anon says
The Hilo series of graphic novels has been a huge hit for our kids and for gifts for 5-9 year olds
octagon says
We’ve enjoyed Zoey and Sassafras. Also the questioneers series (the chapter books), though you’ll need to read them. I’ve also had good luck recently googling for “readalikes” when we find something kiddo likes.
Anonymous says
+1!
EDAnon says
My 5yo is super into Zoey and Sassafras (and he’s a boy, if that matters).
anon says
Other series that were popular with our Dragon Masters loving kids:
Kingdom of Wrenly
The Last Firehawk
Mia Mayhem
Dory Fantasmagory
My 5 yo has also become obsesses with the My Weird School series. It’s meant for slightly older kids, but she finds it hilarious. Be warned that some of it is a bit inappropriate.
We just got the series Dragon Girls from the library, but haven’t started it yet.
Mary Moo Cow says
My Pre-K girl loves the Mercy Watson series; my 6 year old is okay on the Deckawoo Drive series (she reads on a beginning-of-second grade level and can read them almost by herself, to give you a sense of difficulty if you’re looking for something that can be read together and alone.) Both love the old school Amelia Bedelia series. 6 year old’s friends at school are checking the Neverland Girls out of the library. I recently emailed the school librarian for suggestions, since she has access to my daughter’s reading level score from her teacher and got some good suggestions. The local librarians have also been helpful when I just give them a few haphazard “she likes…”.
AwayEmily says
There can never be too many book threads! My kids are almost-6 and almost-4 so we are also always on the hunt for things both will enjoy. So far the biggest hits have been Mercy Watson, Princess in Black, and Sophie Mouse. Series that the kindergartener enjoys but are too much for the 3yo include Zoey and Sassafrass, Jasmine Green Rescues, My Father’s Dragon, and the original American Girl series.
Our library has tons of series — I usually grab one or two each time we go and we test them out to see if it’s worth getting more. I never quite know what will resonate and what she’ll reject.
Jeffiner says
After Princess in Black, my daughter moved onto the Bad Guys and currently loves the 5 Worlds series. She really likes the Little People, Big Dreams biographies as well.
She is also really into the Warrior Cats graphic novels, but those are a bit dark, like “kill that kitten to prove your loyalty to the clan.” My husband calls it Game of Thrones for kids.
Her classmates love Dogman, so we got one of those books. Its terrible. It is by far the worst book we’ve ever read, and we have the complete Warrior Cats series. No Dogman!
SBJ says
The Rabbit & Bear series! My K kid loves them and I enjoy reading them. A little poop humor but also some really great life lessons delivered in a great way (everyone makes mistakes and that’s ok, treat others with kindness, etc.). The other series my K kid likes that’s not mentioned above is Owl Diaries, which I don’t particularly enjoy but seems to inspire independent reading. A short (4 book) graphic novel series my kids liked is Mad Scientist Academy and I liked those, too, as they were surprisingly educational while also being a lot of fun.
Anonymous says
I’m late, but a random library discovery that my K boy really likes (as a read-aloud) is the Danny Dragonbreath series. It’s silly, but cute, and has all the Boy Things throughout the series — knights, pirates, ninjas, etc etc. Danny’s an average guy hero, and his sidekicks are a sarcastic and smart girl, and a nerdy boy. The author, Ursula Vernon, has a Hamster Princess series as well. I’m only a couple chapters in with my 7 y.o. daughter so can’t comment too much other than to say she can read most of it, herself and it’s not terrible.
Anon says
following up on the above – are any of the subscription boxes any good for a 3.5 year old?
Mrs. Jones says
Little Passports is cute
Anon says
Maybe a little young for 3.5 (I think we started at just after 4? ) but Mel Science kits have been an awesome way to show my kid cool reactions and get her excited about the way tiny-things-you-can’t-see things interact to make the world we see work. It made me remember some chemistry too which I enjoyed in high school and college. You can make it as easy or complicated as you want but I really appreciated that the chemical reactions are there and somewhat explained if you want to nerd out.

A few pints of Jeni’s ice cream. We’ve done this before and it’s a huge hit.

same. somebody here (maybe anon.) recommended it to me a few months ago and i gifted it to my friend. big hit!
only hitch was i had to enlist a second friend to pickup the ice cream and deliver it in Arlington…. delivery didn’t work out for some reason i forget why.

My 6 year old wants a locket for Christmas. Any ideas where I can find one? Ideally about $25 limit but I’d go up to $50 for a nice one.
AIMS says
If you want a cheaper one, JCrew Factory has a heart shaped one that looks classic and it’s around $15 right now.

Check out etsy! You can filter for vintage, too. Some that I glanced at looked pretty well-made and sturdy — might have better luck that route for at 6yo! I want this one: Vintage Turquoise Bee Locket – how cute!

12 year old boy present help! My 12 year old doesn’t want anything other than a PS5 (which is proving impossible to find but I will keep trying). We give lots of gifts at Christmas, we like it, any great creative ideas? He likes lacrosse, golf (has the gear for both), Magic the Gathering (has a zillion cards, it’s what he spends allowance on), and video games. I’m really up for any fun ideas, more random the better.
MegJoAmyBeth says
Oh! Also into history.
Spirograph says
I hate to suggest this because they can be so addictive, but does he like computer-based sandbox style games? Sid Meier’s games have a historical flavor that might appeal. That kind of combines the history and video games. Or if he likes board games at all, 12 is a good age to start playing strategy games like Risk and Axis & Allies.
And if he might be into books, *I* like history Cross Sections picture books. Maybe one of those about a historical period he’s particularly interested in?
MegJoAmyBeth says
Thank you! Some great ideas I never would have come up with on my own!

Chess set & some strategy books?

For anyone else with kids in school who were not in school last year (or zoom school), did they regress back to seeming shaky on basic math facts? I feel like my kids are fine with reading and read voluntarily over the pandemic, but they cannot do math now. Which would be fine if school met them where they were and worked forward, but they are expected to totally be on grade level despite not having real math lessons with a live teacher (or even an interactive one — just links to Khan Academy videos). I don’t see getting off the struggle bus anytime soon.
Anon says
Yes, my kids are on grade level, but we supplemented heavily because zoom school was entirely insufficient. I bought a homeschool curriculum (Singapore math) and went through it with my then 2nd grader and pre-Ker.
Anonanonanon says
No math issues, but my son can’t write anywhere near what I would consider to be grade level. His handwriting regressed a bunch, he isn’t started sentences with a capital letter, isn’t ending them with periods, isn’t capitalizing “I,” is confusing your and you’re, etc. He’s in 6th grade. His teacher said that’s the biggest area his class lost ground in. I’m having the opposite problem: the school is kind of just shrugging about it. I don’t want him to be the person everyone snarks about because they’re an adult in the workplace who can’t get “your” and “you’re” right.
Anonymous says
+1 with writing issues.
Anon says
+2. Writing is a major issue. They were assigned a bunch of writing last year, but got almost no feedback. Apparently that doesn’t lead to on grade level learning.
After beginning of the year assessments our 3rd grade teachers canceled science and social studies this year to use that time for writing, phonics and spelling. The whole grade was wildly behind.

I’m 6.5 weeks pregnant. A few days ago I had some spotting occur during a bowel movement. I freaked out a little because it seemed like a lot of blood, but it really wasn’t. The next day, next bowel movement, same thing happened (although it was less this time). I’m now on day four and its getting less volume and brightness each time. I’d be feeling a little calmer about this, but I had been having some mild morning sickness, weird sense of smell, and breast tenderness in week 5 that has now gone away. Anybody gone through this? I know there’s not much I can do at this point but hope it works out, but some anonymous encouragement would be great.
Anonymous says
Are you sure the spotting is coming from your V? I ask as someone who has had hemorrhoids and suspected a minor an*l fissure during pregnancy. If it only happens during a BM it makes me think something unrelated to pregnancy.
Re the pregnancy, could you try another pregnancy test to see if HCG levels are still high enough to test positive? Sending good vibes your way!
OP says
Thanks. I’m sure its from my V. Something I didn’t notice about myself until now but I always wipe there first and look at it before moving on :P
Anonanonanon says
I was going to ask the same thing. Around 16 weeks I had bright blood in the toilet and freaked out and it… wasn’t from my v.
Anon says
Is it only during BM that you spot? Could be a hemorrhoid or tear. Pregnancy did a number on my digestion. I pretty much had to drink a glass of prune juice a day until after the 4th trimester.
Anonymous says
Ask for a ultrasound. It’s early enough to see a heartbeat at 6.5 weeks. I’d be more concerned about symptoms going away. My symptoms were always roaring from 6-9 weeks. Like one day of no symptoms isn’t concerning, but a few days in a row. My OBs actually wanted me to say I was feeling yucky in the first Tri.
Anon says
Different anecdote: I had no morning sickness at all, just some very mild nausea around Week 5 that tapered off by the start of Week 6, and my son is the absolute best.
Anon Lawyer says
I had some bleeding around week 10 that just resolved with no issues. I am told it’s a lot more common than we often think. Is it brown blood or red blood for you? I think either can be fine but brown is more likely to be old blood that was shed from an irritated cervix or something like that.
It is true that consistent symptoms in the first trimester are a good sign but it’s not at all definitive not to have them. I remember feeling a bit nauseous really soon after my positive test and then it going away for a couple of weeks after that. I freaked out but it worked out fine.
Anon says
Call your doc. They can do an ultrasound and/or do a blood draw over 2-3 days and monitor HCG levels. Good luck!
Anon says
Agree with this. They’ll probably do a blood draw and then another in a few days to see which direction the HCG is going. Early bleeding is very common so not on its own cause for alarm, but good to get some advice and support from your doc. Good luck.
anon says
Sending you an internet hug. It’s all probably fine, but still feels so scary. Hopefully, you’re just moving past some initial symptoms! I had a high-risk pregnancy with my first but felt physically fine, so I can relate to this uneasiness about symptoms and lack thereof! Good luck and I hope you can take some time to relax tonight if at all possible.
Anon says
I agree with calling your doc and asking for a progesterone draw, if you haven’t had one yet. Low progesterone is surprisingly common during pregnancy (spotting is often a symptom) and getting on a supplement early can help reduce the risk of m/c
tmi anon says
Hi, I had this from a low-lying placenta both times. When I would bear down, a little bit of placenta tissue would press against the cervix and cause a small bleed. Definitely make sure you are not at all constipated to minimize any bearing down, that’s step one.
Second, get an ultrasound (it will be tv at this point) and they can check placenta location. If that is all good, it could be the cervix itself is irritated. They can cauterize it chemically (I had that done for my second pregnancy) or potentially even stitch it (they do this more w/ multiples I think).
Hugs, I know how scary this is!! It happened to me around 9w both times and freaked me out, but as the placenta moved with the baby’s growth, the bleeding totally stopped. Since it is just when you bear down, I think it is likely placenta or cervix – not that you are losing the pregnancy – but once you get it checked out you will feel SO much better!!
Anon says
This is super late but I had blood on the toilet paper every time I pooped for a couple weeks in my first trimester. It was definitely from my V. I asked my doctor and she said there’s pressure on the cervix when you poop and the cervix is really sensitive and bleeds easily in early pregnancy. She seemed to think it was pretty normal and did not require any kind of ultrasound or follow up. I had a healthy full term baby.
