Something on your mind? Chat about it here. But first, our reccs for professional maternity wear and beyond…
Pictured above:
Liz Lange® for Target® Maternity Sleeveless Ponte Dress – Black ($29.99 @ Target) / Maternity Coral floral tunic ($39 @ Dorothy Perkins (but take 25% off sitewide through 5/18 with code DPFW25)) / Gentle Souls Osaka Park, $119 at 6pm (also available in mustard; was $195) / Burnout stripe T-shirt infinity scarf (on sale for $14.99 @ Gap) /
Majestic Paris for Neiman Marcus, Linen and Silk Blend Blazer ($285 @ Neiman Marcus)
Happy Friday! I’ve had great luck with Gentle Souls being low heels if you’re pregnant or building up your “heel” muscles again (the pictured pumps have a 2.5″ heel with a hidden platform of .5″, making it a 2″ heel), and this burnout stripe scarf from Gap looks great for pregnancy, nursing, and beyond. The linen and silk sweater blazer is pricey, but looks like an amazing investment piece for just about every stage (including beyond nursing) — I’d wear it over sheath dresses, with jeans and trousers, and more. What’s on your mind this week, ladies? Anyone have fun plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend?

Is there a reason that “recs” is spelled with to CCs all the time on this site (i.e. “reccs”)? I’ve jsut never seen it spelled that way. Random I know, but it bugs me!
Kat G says
you know, I think I’ve always spelled it like that to differentiate it from a “rec room,” but considering that the word itself only has one C, maybe I’ll change it. Just one of those things, like how I’ve always used “biz” in notes instead of “business.”

I’m getting close to labor again and curious — what positions did you guys actually use for pushing? I had an epidural with my first so I was sort of stuck to the traditional one. Also, any good tips to bring on labor? :)

I pushed on all 4s and didn’t tear at all! I’ve hears s3x, spicy food, and long walks help bring on labor — the first one worked for me!
Lorelai Gilmore says
Try acupuncture. It worked for me.

I’m getting close too! The first time I was semi-reclined, with an epidural.
I’ve been reading about changing positions while laboring down, with an epidural. This article has some interesting ideas: http://doulanursemidwife.blogspot.com/2010/08/beauty-of-laboring-down-using.html
As long as you’re supported on the bed, you should be able to move around somewhat, even with a full epidural.
No tips for bringing on labor. But good luck!

Completely anecdotal, but I had a pedicure in the morning at 36w2d with my first and was in labor by evening. (I really didn’t WANT to be in labor at that point since my husband was out of town, but that’s another story.) Supposedly there are trigger points in the feet that can help bring on labor, but a licensed massage therapist would be a better choice than a random nail salon. :) I have also heard spicy food, walking, s3x, castor oil, raspberry leaf tea, nipple stimulation…

Loved the article about “it gets better”. Working full time with a one year old and two year old, I feel like it HAS to get better…at some point….because this point in life is so wearing.

Honestly, this is why I’m so afraid of the idea of a second baby. How do you decide to go for #2? I’m thinking of getting an IUD (just had #1 three months ago).
Lorelai Gilmore says
Preg 3L : how are you? I have been worried about you ever since that thread back in April.

Thank you; I’m alright. Just finished law school! Not spending much time in front of a computer these days (til bar prep starts, of course).
Diana Barry says
Ditto, hope you are doing OK.

Getting ready for #2…(due this summer)…it took some time but we just felt “ready”. I know that sounds cliche, but I think there really is a time that you will feel like your family isn’t complete yet and it is time to grow again.
That being said, I am definitely scared for work/life balance once #2 gets here!

Agreed — for a long time I just couldn’t wrap my head around Doing it Again — the pregnancy and labor and newborn thing. We probably would have been one and done had it not been really really important to us that our son have a sibling. Between that priority and my ticking biological clock, the earliest I could talk myself into trying again was when my son was around 2.
Lorelai Gilmore says
I have two. When my oldest turned two, it definitely started to be easier – so then we had a second baby and it got complicated again. No question but that two is much harder than one. I highly recommend spacing them out a little bit, especially if you’re trying to work while mothering. (If I were a SAHM, I can see wanting to do it all at once.)
2 in July says
This is what scares me. We have a 1.5 year old and I’m due in July. I’m trusting things will work out with the second and I/we will fall into a new routine. In full disclosure, we weren’t trying for the second. We’d had problems conceiving our first and (incorrectly) assumed we’d have those same issues. Granted, it’s a HUGE blessing to have no issues conceiving this time. But I would have preferred to have the kids spaced out a bit. Now, I’m in a relatively new position and trying to build a client-base. Difficult to do while pregnant and I’m not looking forward to doing it with a toddler and a new-born.
I keep telling myself, people do this every day. And, I remind myself how much easier things have gotten just in the last few months with my daughter. (Here we go again…)
EB0220 says
On a reasonably light note, I have two questions as I am pondering what to buy for my second baby (coming this summer): Can anyone recommend a baby monitor with multiple cameras?
EB0220 says
Oops! I only had one question!
Diana Barry says
We have a Motorola one with 2 cameras – you can look for it on Amazon. I think it was around $150? It is really good, although I don’t like the music it comes with (bad quality). The best thing is that you can talk to the kids to tell them to get back in their beds. :)

Breadfeeding and weight loss question:
I am breastfeeding and I love it. I’m also about 3-4 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight and overall, I’m happy with how I look. BUT, I’d love to lose that last little bit of weight and perhaps a bit more (~8lbs total). I’ve been tracking all my food, staying between 1400 – 1600 calories, sticking to a mostly plant based diet and exercising regularly (mostly walks because that’s what the baby likes). I’ve been doing this for weeks and weeks with no results. Is this weight going to stick around until I wean? I don’t think there’s anything else I can do. Exercise harder? — I was a runner in my former life and ran ~40 miles per week — is that the difference? I’m eating way less now that I’m not exercising as much.
