sports practices until 9pm on a weeknight are not appropriate for 3rd graders in an area where school starts at 7:30am. end rant. and this is for rec level.

On the open water theme of the day: As a person born and raised in a Great Lakes state, I object in the strongest terms to renaming Lake Ontario on the grounds that HOMES is a great pneumonic. Say nothing of the fact that renaming major bodies of water to suit your ego and nurse grudges is petty and idiotic.

Low stakes advice requested! I’m getting more piercings tomorrow. Nothing crazy, just more lobes. I am debating between one and two more lobes per ear. Any thoughts? I am a boring millennial with only one lone piercing per year, not super fashionable, wfh in a casual industry in the PNW so basically still live in leggings and zoom tops. I’ve wanted this for a long time, so it’s finally happening.

Just a PSA for women. I had to get a hysteroscopy today for a uterine polyp and endometrial biopsy. I have a high pain tolerance and had unmedicated births. I would rate this as a 8/10 on the pain scale and I started going into shock and almost passed out afterwards. Our office offers nitrous oxide and I was a dummy and didn’t do it. I should’ve had it, and had my husband take me. TLDR – if you have to get one of these it’s EXTREMLY painful and take all the sedation you can get.

Spinoff of the ocean swimming question. Do you, as an adult, feel safe on open water alone? With the empty nest years approaching I would like to do more paddleboarding on lakes and rivers and to learn to surf, but my husband is not interested in joining me. The beaches near us and in our usual vacation spot have no lifeguards. I know plenty of people do these sports alone, but on the other hand I have heard some scary stories. I suppose I’d feel safer if I had cell service on my Apple watch and could call for help in an emergency?

When did you start letting your kids swim in the ocean without you in the water?

We took a short beach weekend trip this last weekend, and I was surprised at how young some of the kids were who didn’t have parents in the water. My kids are 2 and 5 months, so I’m obviously not at that stage yet. But I guess I’m wondering if I’ll come sooner than I thought.

Small win for me. I’m the poster that has had DH on business travel for a month. Of course today is a packed day on all fronts, before I leave tomorrow for a weekend away. Me and DH messaging this AM (he is back this weekend):

DH: Can you buy DDs [thing for activity that he’s taking her to on Sunday, which is something he did growing up and I’m not as familiar with gear-wise]
Me: I think the first class without will be fine, plus I don’t really know what to look for and don’t have time to research today.
DH: I’ll handle it
[3 minutes later]
DH: Done
Me: Thanks!

And I thanked him and went on my way. This is huge for me, usually I’d tie myself in knots, or overexplain how busy today is, or been like “Okay fine I’ll take the 10 minutes to research and add to cart” and be annoyed about it, but I just…didn’t.

My 5-year-old is going to start Kindergarten in a week and still grips her pencil with a fist. She’s decently adept writing and coloring like that but of course I know she needs to switch. I try and try to get her to correct her grip and she mostly growls like a bear at me when I do that. In some moments she will give it a shot when I explain that in school she will be required to switch but she really hates it and get frustrated easily and then gives up on it. We’ve also tried the little pencil grips and she also hates those. In general, she has great fine motor skills and is incredibly strong and athletic. I’m wondering if I should see if Kindergarten helps her switch to the right grip, or if I should continue to harague her, or if a couple of OT sessions with someone other than me explaining it would help. Or all of the above?

The Rainbow Fish is a little messed up, isn’t it? I don’t remember the message being “give parts of yourself away, even if you don’t want to, to anyone who asks.” I just remember the pretty foil art!

My pet peeve of the day- we’re at the beach and it drives me insane when we haul our stuff out to the beach to play but others have already put out stuff to reserve prime shoreline space, and then it’s just us surrounded by empty chairs for four hours. One group has started putting up utility flags around their empty chairs to make sure no one gets too close. Would add that their stuff sits on the beach for a solid 8 hours, but they’ve generally spent about two hours per day actually there.
