May post again Monday for a wider audience, but… Anyone have a fun idea to replace our elementary school PTO’s casino night? It’s just gotten kind of …. repetitive and attendance has dwindled. I’m not on our PTO but my neighbor is and asked me for ideas.
I’m going mountain biking with my father tomorrow and it’s one of the first times I’ve felt good about taking significant time (half a day) to myself on a weekend. With my son in daycare, I’ve long felt that I need to maximize the weekend time with him, but I’m realizing that I do get a lot of time with him on weekdays too (it adds up) and that it’s also important to spend time with my father while he’s still active and well. It wasn’t mom guilt exactly, but more like anxiety to not “miss a moment.” It’s nice to have this mindset shift. Wish me luck and hope everyone has a great weekend!
Looking for a magical trip to take with a 20 month old. I’m thinking I need a hotel room with a balcony or terrace and a view to appreciate, breakfast on site and a casual dinner option, room to run around in nature/a garden, a pool, and a really good playground. With a vision of crack of dawn breakfast and playground, a more mama focused activity of some sort in the morning, nap, pool, mayhem, dinner. Does anyone have a specific recommendation? Will be next June.
Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for fall break? (October 9-12) Kids are 7 and 4.5. Has anyone been? Would you recommend it?
This is a main page question but the main page scares me. Any tips for working with a micromanager? My boss gives me good reviews so it’s presumably not that she thinks I’m incompetent, but will insert herself into everything. Yesterday it was into how we told some people to confer on a date and get back to us. I have 17 years of experience!
For a variety of reasons, I don’t want to look for a new job. Is this just the price of admission?
Is there such a thing as a nice looking play set for the front yard? Our back yard has a pool and then a wooded area sloping down to a creek. The front yard is about 3/4 of an acre and is flat, open space. One side yard is an option (the other side is the driveway), but cicada killer wasps nest there in July so that seems like a bad idea (and I don’t want to kill the wasps because they’re natural pest control).
This is a few years down the road for us, but I’m starting to daydream about having a little castle or fort or something out front. Probably not a traditional swing set. I guess we could have something custom built to match the house but I shudder to think what that would cost. We don’t have an HOA but I also don’t want to be an eyesore. Thoughts?
Fun (or ridiculous?) Friday question! Going to the wedding of DH’s coworker this fall. It’s in November, upper Midwest, and…outside on one of the Great Lakes. Wedding website says formal attire. What on Earth do I wear??? Bedazzled puffer???

I’m halfway through Astronaut! by Dana Aristide, and a third of the way through The Revolutionists. My 9 year old has blasted through the first 4 Spy x Family manga in the last two weeks, and working his way more slowly through the 2nd Impossible Creatures book.
Help me think through travel plans for next summer. It would be me, my husband, kids 14 and 12. We’ve been to London and around North America, but not traveled widely.
(A) My parents are taking a European cruise for my mom’s milestone birthday – Venice, Monenego, a couple sites in Greece, Croatia. They’re like us to join but aren’t expecting it (my siblings are definite nos). I get along with my parents but we’re not really close, and I feel somewhat bad about that, plus we’ve traveled a lot with my in-laws but not them (my in-laws pay and offer a lot – it’s not always my first choice). On one hand, the cruise sounds lovely, and my kids love cruises, but on the other, I worry that if I’m going to see these places, I want to not be bound by cruise limitations, and I’m worried the cruise (Royal Caribbean, smaller and no water slide) won’t be as kid-friendly as others we’ve taken (though my kids are in that in-between stage where it’s hard to find things to entertain them now). But on the other other hand, I tend to drag my feet on stuff like this and wind up doing nothing.
(B)Alternatively, my husband found a good deal on an Italian trip, which also sounds great. We’d have the freedom to see Rome and other places, rather than being locked into the cruise itinerary. But we obviously wouldn’t go as many places, and don’t know our way around. And I’d feel pretty bad skipping the cruise but still going yo Italy, you know?
(C) We’ve taken some big trips recently, and I kind of want to save the money and just do a low-key Florida beach trip. I sort of wonder if the kids are getting spoiled (my family never went anywhere more exotic than the Jersey shore). But maybe I’m just being cheap, and I’m stuck on the fact that there won’t be too many more opportunities to take the kids somewhere amazing. Plus I’ve been mourning the loss of my kids being little lately, and I’m concerned my ideal of the beach (playing in the sand and waves) just isn’t what can happen anymore.
