I know it’s a slow day, but here’s my tale of woe – my apartment building is doing maintenance on the garage, and has requested that all cars from my row be removed by 6 am and not back until after 6 pm. We are expecting to get 6-12 inches of snow tonight, which will mean a snow emergency tomorrow (no curb parking for a couple blocks around my building, and beyond that, only on one side of the street). There are ramps in my area, but they are (a) expensive and/or (b) not open overnight, and will be swamped with street parkers who need to move their cars for the snow emergency.
The building manager just called and said there is nothing she can do – no open spots in the garage, no flexibility to put the project on hold for the snow emergency. I think I’ll probably just pay the $30 to park overnight in a ramp nearby. The alternative would be to find someone available at 5:30 in the morning to come sit in my apartment for an hour while I drive around the neighborhood looking for parking in the early morning hours, but I just don’t have it in me today to make those arrangements.

Seriously, if there were ever a time to throw money at a problem, that time is now. Sounds horrible.

Ok, thank you for these responses. I was worried that I was overreacting, and it’s good to feel like I am instead righteously peeved. What a pain.

What would happen if you stayed in your spot? Sounds like a bunch of spots are affected, and you are thinking several steps ahead. Ime, most people won’t do that. I could see people either seeing the snow emergency status on the news and figuring that means they don’t have to move or trying to park on the street but being unable and returning to the garage. Maybe risky but unless I thought I would be towed I’d probably just let them wait until I left for work…
Super annoying any which way though.

They have been very aggressively towing people from other rows (ours is one of the last rows). Much as I don’t want to pay to park in a ramp overnight, it’s easier and cheaper than picking up my car from the impound lot with all the folks who couldn’t navigate the snow emergency rules….

Ugh, I hear you. Pay the $30, though – it will be impossible to get into or out of any parallel street parking because of the snow ‘hump’ that is left once the plows go through. I remember receiving 3 days of parking tickets one winter during law school because I literally could not move my car – snow wall from plows was 20 inches high and solid ice. I tried out my budding lawyer-arguing skills when I challenged the tickets a few months later … failed.
Tunnel says
Don’t take it personally. You can’t win in city parking court. They literally deny any challenge you give them and make you appeal it if you really want to do anything about it. It’s baloney.
