I’m not sure this is any help, because I’m pretty sure my favorite “maternity” pants are 7+ years old, but I have a couple pair of NY and Co pants with an elastic waist that I bought way back when I first got a big-girl job. They’re some kind of knit material and heavier and warmer than any reasonably priced maternity options I’ve seen. Obviously this depends on how you’re carrying, but I just leave the waistband sitting below the bump (I’m wearing a pair today, so they still work at 36 weeks!) and I don’t find it any less comfortable than any other maternity pants. In fact, they’re kind of sweatpant-adjacent in feel, which I love. And machine-washable.

This is the closest current version I could find, but based on the reviews it looks like they’re not as thick or comfortable as my old ones…

I find that the panel on Loft pants is very tight. Some may like the increased support, but for me, it’s overly constricting. It does have a nice smooth surface, though, which makes tops glide over it better than the panels from, say, Motherhood. And the pants themselves are closer to regular pants than many cheapo poly maternity “dress” pants.

100% accurate description of Loft pants.

Oooh, I like these! I love tweed pants. I haven’t bought any maternity work pants since I’m in law school and don’t need to dress for work every day. I’ve gotten by with dresses/tights/unbuttoned blazers for conferences and clinic meetings.
On another clothing note, I went to the mall this weekend to try to find some new bras. I’m still pretty much the same size in the third trimester as in first trimester, when I went from an A to almost a B (big news around here) but the stretchy lined bralets I’ve been wearing aren’t fitting quite right. Thought I would check out Nordstrom’s nursing bra selection and was informed they only carry size DD+ in store. As for now-bras, I was pretty much relegated to the training bra department. Sigh. I’ve since ordered a coobie and a bravado from amazon. Never thought I would say this, but I’m looking forward to wearing regular underwire bras again…

Sounds like you’re about the same size as me and I loooooooved these nursing bras – cheap from Motherhood, padded to conceal nursing pads when the time comes, and no wires. You might give them a try – I ordered one and then promptly ordered another, I loved them so much. 34B worked perfectly for me, it’s sized on the smaller side, but the cups do stretch to accommodate changes when your milk comes in.

I wore underwire bras during pregnancy and while nursing with no ill effects. Might be worth a try if they are more comfortable to you.

You’re going to love your Bravado bra — I lived in mine for 15+ months postpartum and they were awesome!

Seconded!

My experience w Nordies bras is that they engage in some serious vanity sizing up. Like you, I’m a lifelong A and grew to a B during pregnancy. I went in for a fitting at N and walked out with some perfectly sized bras that were labeled D but fit like the Bs from other places. I loved those bras and would recommend going in for a fitting. You might be surprised what fits!
Another recommendation that I wish I had taken advantage of is having whatever bras you buy during pregnancy converted to nursing bras, i.e adding clips, if you plan to nurse. Apparently an easy fix and means you can wear those bras post-partum, too (as opposed to being worn for a few months only, relegated to the underwear drawer during the nursing months, and never seen from again after your size returns to “normal”… )

I increased to a fully A cup while nursing, so I hear you! I found some nursing bras online that are size small instead of cup sized and had a lot of luck with those.
ANP says
In terms of my favorite maternity trouser silhouette, skinny wins hands down — but it’s rarely work appropriate for me. So I stick to wide-leg or bootcut most of the time. Love these pants!

Around what week (or month) did you ladies make the jump over to maternity pants? I’m only 9 weeks, so definitely don’t need them yet, especially since it’s my first preg, and I have a very long torso (complimented by wide-calved stubby legs, so I’m not exactly “tall”!).
sfg says
I was in maternity jeans around 18 weeks. Have not transitioned to maternity pants for work yet (24 weeks) but pretty sure it’s just around the corner. Been wearing mostly skirts and dresses, with the 1-2 pairs of pants that somehow still fit.

Switched to wearing pretty much only dresses and elastic-waist skirts around 10 or 11 weeks, as all my work pants are quite high-waisted and the belly bands didn’t work on my bloated self. Was able to keep wearing some normal shorts and jeans until maybe 13 weeks, unbuttoned. If I wanted to wear pants, they had to be maternity pants from 14 weeks on. I have a very long torso, but apparently carried very low, and didn’t own any low-waisted pants to begin with. The “awkward stage” lasted from 14 to 26 weeks! Also, for me pencil skirts were one of the first things to be jettisoned, but I know for some of my friends they kept working long into the pregnancy.
Newly pregnant says
I’m almost 18 weeks and have gained weight but don’t really have a bump. I decided to size up in normal jeans rather than jump into maternity jeans, and those are still working for me. Plus, I figured that I’ll need them post-preg. I have still managed to wear my normal work dresses and skirts, although everything is a bit tighter. I didn’t really wear work pants before pregnancy, but I definitely can’t fit into any of those anymore. I think I’ll probably have to switch over to maternity clothes in the next few weeks.
Katala says
I was pretty bloated starting at about 8 weeks and was doing my work pants unbuttoned with an elastic belt and camis to cover. That started getting really uncomfortable around 11-12 weeks, at which point i was down to 2 pairs – one 2 sizes larger than normal and another that had an elastic waist (not maternity). I finally put on the maternity pants around 12-13 wks and haven’t gone back. They are sooo much better. I don’t care that it’s my first pregnancy and i didn’t have a real bump yet.
Dresses and skirts were working OK but it got cold and tights were uncomfortable. I have a pair of maternity tights but they’re still all huge in the belly at almost 19 weeks.
I will note that I could never stand tight waistbands so there was no just living with it for me..
CPA lady says
I was so violently ill during the first trimester that anything pressing on my stomach made me feel even worse… so super early. Way before I “needed” to. Maybe about 10-11 weeks?
Tunnel says
I cracked at about 14 weeks and am glad I did. My pants were not buttoning (the fact that I am carrying low may have contributed to it) and switching was just so much more comfortable. I have about 5-7 maternity pants and figured I didn’t mind spending a few more weeks in them given their comfort. I am not sure why some people resist it for so long!
