Any tips to get through end of third trimester insomnia? It’s extension season, I’m supposed to be working a lot of overtime, doing work that actually requires using my brain, and I haven’t slept in what feels like weeks. I feel like I can barely put a sentence together. I can’t take any time off, and I actually need to be billing more hours than I am. My office doesn’t have a door, so I can’t just take a nap during the day, unfortunately.

I’m a week away from my due date and the insomnia has been awful the last two weeks. I’m occasionally taking half a 25 mg tablet of Unisom at night. It’s safe to take during pregnancy from what I understand (I also took a half-tablet + B6 at night during my first trimester for nausea). The nights I do take it are the only time I can fall asleep before 4am.

+1 for unisom. Take half unless you can devote a solid 12 hours to sleep. But with half, I can get up after 8 hrs.
I had to take it for nearly the entirety of one of my pregnancies. The sleep tab is safe, but apparently the gel cap is not. (I think it’s actually a different active ingredient). Internet rumor is that it was actually developed for morning sickness but made everyone so sleepy that they sold it as a sleep aid, hence why it’s been actually tested on pregnant women.

Depending on how much pain you’re in and how hot it is where you live, I found that a brief walk at night usually helped clear my head and sleep some in my last trimester. Barring that, my doctor recommended unisom, as well. Even my Zofran usually knocked me out enough that I could get a decent(ish) night’s sleep.

Lots of COLD drinks – I would get a huge drink (limeade, coke, etc) from Sonic with all that tiny ice. Something about the coldness really helped keep my brain functioning. The 32 oz cokes weren’t great for me or baby, but it was what I had to do for a week, and it worked.
Eliminate everything else that you can – go to bed the minute you get home, order in dinner, simplify your beauty routine so you can sleep as late as possible in the morning.
If you’re already doing all that and still exhausted… I have no other advice, and will just commiserate that it is really, really hard. :/ Good luck!

Get up from your desk whenever you can – go to a person’s office to talk to them rather than calling. Take a five minute walk outside if possible.
In my sleep deprived state, I’m freshest in the morning and a zombie by mid-afternoon, so I try to do my most brain-intensive tasks before lunch.
Drink lots of water and snack throughout the day to keep your blood sugar steady. Try to eat snacks with a carb and a protein component.

On the theme of sleeping…my 11 mo old is currently being treated for her first ear infection. For the past week her sleeping has regressed horribly. Before the infection, she had just started sleeping until 6 or 6:15, which was amazing. But since she got the infection, she’s been waking at least once per night (usually 2 or 3 times), and sometimes won’t go back to sleep unless I’m holding her — which means I don’t sleep the rest of the night, of course. Will this regression pass once her infection clears? Any words of encouragement or tips/tricks to getting back to normal? I’m exhausted and have been useless at work this week.
PS – I love this necklace. I’m usually not much for accessories, but I’m really tempted by this.
PPS – I like the blog broadcast. Like anonmama said, it’s a good reminder to check out this s i t e every day. I only get one email.

Is she having errrrrrr …tummy troubles from the antibiotics? My pediatrician recommended 1/2 a capsule of Culturelle in my baby’s milk to restore her intestinal flora to a normal level.
Is she waking up at erratic times, or the same time every night? Waking up at erratic times usually means there is pain, hunger, or sleep distractions. Waking up at the same time is a bad habit. My youngest had an 18 day stomach virus that lead to serious sleep regression and now she likes to party every morning at 0315. To break this habit, I set my alarm for 0300 and I gently pat her back to wake her up a bit. Then we all go right back to sleep.

Ohh, this gives me lots to think about — thank you! The first couple days I heard some toots coming from her rear end, but gas drops seem to have fixed that. She’s been waking between 4 and 4:30 each night (and in a pretty good mood, so I bet that’s the bad habit) and on other nights maybe once or twice before (so that may be pain). I’ll try Tylenol and cuddling for the earlier wakings, and setting my alarm for 4 to head off the party.
An 18 day stomach virus sounds miserable for all involved. Hope everything gets back to normal for you all soon.

So I’ve tried to comment on this post and the last one three times and my comments are disappearing into the ether. Maybe my normal name is setting it off (JJ)?
FVNC: words of encouragement that her sleep will likely go back to normal as soon as she’s feeling better. Although if it doesn’t get better after your round of antibiotics is finished – keep an eye on her. My 12-month old had to go through three rounds of antibiotics (and ended up with shots) before his last ear infection finally cleared.
Ear infections are the devil (says the mom whose son is getting tubes in his ears tomorrow).

Thanks, JJ. She’s on day 8 of antibiotics. Sounds like a re-check may be in order when we get back in town after the holiday weekend. We’ll be flying and I’m worried the air pressure will hurt her little ears (and she’ll pick up all kinds of new fun germs…yay!).

Thanks! If it’s any consolation, we had a 3 hour flight when my son was 10 months and had double ear infections. He didn’t seem in pain or acting like it hurt him. Just in case, I gave him a bottle during take off and landing.

Sucking and chewing helps release pressure, so nurse, bottle, or chewy foods/treats help at take off and landing.
