I know a lot of moms who throw this kind of diaper changing clutch under their stroller, or in their backseat, and go — it’s great because it isn’t bulky, but gets the job done when you need it to. I like this gray trellis print the best, but all of them are pretty great. The pictured one is $17.49 at Amazon. JJ Cole Diaper Changing ClutchSales of note for 9.10.24

I am expecting my first this December and we are trying to figure out baby clothes. I am stumped on the question on what a newborn is supposed to wear as an outer layer on the coldest days when s/he will have to be outside (for example to come home from the hospital, get to doctor, get to Christmas meal, etc.). We live in the Chicago area, so I expect it to be pretty cold on at least some of these days. Should I be looking for a snowsuit? A fleecy thing? Super-bunting? Other? I am great at dressing myself, but not sure I trust my baby-comfort-dar. Thanks so much!!
Kate says
We used this and it worked well. And it’s adorable. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/52109?productId=874355
ELL says
Someone just gave us this. It is the softest thing I’ve ever touched. And it runs large. Love it, though we haven’t used it yet.
Anon says
Can you put this on the baby if you’re putting the baby in the carseat?
KJ says
I wouldn’t. I think it’s too fluffy to be safe, but I’m also really paranoid about that.
Mamma says
My little guy was born in December, too. We mostly dressed him in fleecy sleeper type things, and wrapped him in a blanket and put socks on his hands if we were out.
Someone gave us something really similar to the thing that Kate pointed to, but it was too big and he didn’t really grow into it until spring.
Carrie M says
If the baby is going to be in a car, you can’t have anything too bulky on the baby’s body because the car seat won’t be strapped in tightly enough. If you’re going to be walking/taking public transit, then I don’t think it matters as much how tightly the baby is strapped in. Though I would recommend still strapping the baby in if you’re putting the car seat on a stroller. Accidents happen!
Our baby was born last winter. She pretty much lived in one piece footed zip-ups (cotton or fleece). If we were taking her out in the car, I would add a warmer hat and a fleece hoodie, then put a warm blanket on top of her. We didn’t really have her outside for any extended period until it was a bit warmer. But even then, I did the same thing: hat, one piece, fleece, blanket.
FWIW, I didn’t really start “dressing” her until she was a few months old. Usually I just changed her from one footed one piece to another. If we were having visitors, then I would put her in a cute outfit, but that never seemed to last long.
Mamma Mia says
We pretty much did that, too. He would kind of wear one sleeper until he spit up or leaked on it, but if that was an hour or two full days and nights, it didn’t really matter.
Anonyc says
Had a January baby during a pretty cold winter (not The Polar Vortex, but close). I used a lot of fleece onesies (and Carter’s is having a fleece sale right now, btw), a one-piece fleece outer coverall like the link previously provided, lots of hats, and a sherpa-y bunting for the carrier (like this–http://jjcolecollections.com/urban-bundleme–but shop around because they are often on sale if you’re not committed to the trendiest/coolest colors). I also used my baby carrier a lot–would have her in the Ergo wearing the fleece suit and a warm hat and then would zip my husband’s jacket, which I co-opted, around her; this was especially warm and we did a lot of walking around that way.
At night, in our freezing apartment, she’d wear fleece sleepers–sometimes with onesies and socks underneath–plus a fleece Halo sleepsack and often a tight cotton cap. Those sleepsacks are great; I have my 6-month-old in it now even though it’s not all that cold out. Newborns have so little body fat that they get cold rather easily.
Anon says
I am so glad you asked this question. I am also due in December and as a FTM, I have all of the same questions.
Sarabeth says
Similar weather here; we did fleece sleepers exclusively, plus a snowsuit if we were going on a walk outside. No snowsuits in the carseat, though, and if you get a carseat cover, get one that just covers the top of the carseat, over the straps (ie, it doesn’t come between the baby and the carseat at all).
R says
Chicago area here. I bought the Jolly Jumper Sneak a Peek Cover, which is a fleece blanket that fits around your car seat. (It’s on Amazon for $30.) I actually didn’t have her in a coat all winter – since we carried the car seat from car to daycare to house to wherever, the Jumper plus a warm hat (and an extra blanket to cover her face when it was super super cold) was enough to keep her warm and cozy, and keep her car seat straps snug.
greenie says
We got prams for baby to wear outside and then did lots of layers because baby would go back from hot to cold very quickly. We never used a “snowsuit” or one of those carseat covers because of the bulkiness. I prefered a blanket over the carseat so I knew baby was buckled in correctly.

Due in June, you guys!!
Last time, I had some weirdness regarding my last period (several months before I conceived), so I got to go to the doc and get an ultrasound the day I called, but this time I have to wait until the end of the month – boo!
My husband is taking the little guy shopping for a “big brother” shirt today, and I’m planning to call my parents on facetime with him wearing it, and see how long it takes them to notice. :)
Work is slow and very, very few people are here. So hard to focus!!! Last time, I worked somewhere different and told them right away, but this time I’m trying to hold off until my end-of-year review, out of hopes that it won’t impact a raise. But that seems so far away, so I had to tell someone!
Pogo says
aw congrats!! I know it will be so hard for me not to tell anyone.
Spirograph says
Congratulations!
We put a “big brother” shirt on my son before my mom came to visit… it seriously took her like 45 minutes, and my husband saying “So, do you like his shirt?” Whereupon she said, “oh I saw it, but I wasn’t sure if it was just a hand-me-down.”
Mamma Mia says
Yeah, I’m wondering how well it will work. We’re planning to visit my husband’s parents in a month, so we were hoping to wait until then to tell them in person. But we have plans with his aunt and uncle (who we are close to) to go to a “beer pairing dinner” this weekend. He thinks that I can just drink a little and they won’t notice, but I’m not sure. (I’m fine with drinking a small amount, but I’m not sure whether that will work well over multiple courses.) So we might tell them early and hope that they can stay mum.
FVNC says
Congratulations! Your parents will be so thrilled, even if you have to help them figure out the big news.

Thank you. He is moving out today. He said lots of sh!tty things, the latest was, “ironic that today is 10-10” because we got engaged on 10-10, 4 years ago.
To (former) preg 3L says
GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! So proud.
Also, I think it’s a good thing that today is 10/10. It will forever recast that day as one of the beginning of something that will bring you happiness and peace, instead of being a reminder of something that brought you unhappiness, judgment, and cruelty. You just reclaimed 10/10 for yourself and your daughter. Rock on!

YAY for progress. Ignore the rest.

I’m happy for you. I know it’s hard, but ignore the terrible things he’s saying. Think of them as further evidence to back up your decision.

Good for you! I’m so relieved to hear he is not refusing to leave. What a relief it will be to come home with baby to a peaceful home. Thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way!

Good for you!! Just remember that anything he says at this point is further confirmation that you made the right decision for yourself and for your daughter.
Carrie M - Carters Sale says
I’m sure Kat will do her sales roundup, but I just saw Carters is doing up to 60% off fleece / cozy items. I like their fleece zip up PJs, and they’re on sale now for $10. I also used their fleece sleep bags when my daughter was a newborn.
ETA – I size up for their PJs. My 7mo is slightly above average in height (65%ile I think). The 12mo PJs fit her well, with a little room to grow.
Anon says
Would you get the 3M size for a newborn? Not sure how small they run. Also, can you swaddle the baby with one of the fleece zip up PJs or are they better for day time use during the winter?
JJ says
Carter’s newborn onesies are fairly small. So I would err on the side of 3M. We’ve swaddled our kids with the onesies with no issues. But we’ve also used the Carter’s and Halo fleece sleep sacks with the onesies, as well. Halo makes sleep swaddle sacks that were lifesavers.
Also, a great lifehack that I learned was that if the footed onesies were a tad too big, you can put socks on over the onesie and that will hold the feet in place.
pockets says
I had a small-ish baby and I used newborn for the first month or so, so I would actually err on the side of newborn but not cut any tags off until after the baby is born (this was after I made my mom return all the newborn outfits she bought because I thought I’d have a huge baby, and then called her from the hospital saying, MOM!!! BUY ALL THE NEWBORN!!!). Baby bodies are all scrunched up for a while after birth and the 3M size looked really silly.
Also, this is my protip on zippers vs. snaps: snaps until you’re no longer changing diapers in the middle of the night (first 2 months?) and then zippers after that. I refuse to buy any one-pieces that snap.
Carrie M says
Curious why snaps worked better for you in the beginning? I hated trying to snap up PJs at 3am in the dark. I am team zipper all the way!
pockets says
I found it easier to unsnap the bottom, pull up the legs part and change the diaper rather than unzip and wrangle legs out of PJ and then change.
Actually, come to thing of it, I think I mostly used gowns + onesie + swaddle for the first 2 months.
It’s amazing how much extra space there is in my brain for these thoughts and opinions.
mascot says
Along those lines, I wished that zippers could be opened from the bottom. I always felt bad having to basically undress my child out of warm snuggly pjs. Team gown all the way
JJ says
Halo actually makes onesies that zipped from bottom. They were only for fairly small sizes (I think they topped out at 6 months), but they were awesome.
anon says
I agree about having some newborn clothes with the tags on and the receipt handy. My baby arrived early quite unexpectedly and the only newborn sized clothes we had for a few days were the ones my sister picked up at Target on her way to the hospital.

Question for all you law ladies who have transitioned in-house – is 12 weeks fully paid maternity leave standard in corporate? I’m looking at an offer where the pay is pretty great (still a pay-cut but not as bad as I thought), 4 weeks vacation, standard health benefits (incl. short-term disability), retirement, etc. but maternity leave is only 8 weeks fully paid. I’m wondering if this is something I should have negotiated further, or if the higher salary makes up for it? Thanks all.
In-House says
I’m in-house and our maternity leave is 8 weeks paid (and then can take another 4 unpaid, or more as approved by manager).
eh230 says
Yeah, I don’t think 12 weeks paid is standard in the corporate world. I am in-house and have a one-year old and four-year old. I was at a firm with the four-year old and received 12 weeks paid leave (8 weeks from short-term disability and 4 weeks parental leave). In-house, I received 8 weeks paid leave (all short-term disability). I only would have gotten 6 weeks for a vaginal birth. I took an extras 3 weeks vacation. It it helps, I am at a very large private company.
JJ says
Most companies that I know of don’t have a paid maternity leave policy. It’s usually what you have in vacation, plus short-term disability (which often pays a percentage of your salary for 6-8 weeks). The rest of your FMLA period would be unpaid.
Pogo says
Agreed, this is what I’ve seen. I’ve never worked anywhere with full paid maternity leave, so 8 weeks fully paid sounds amazing.
ETA – curious if anyone knows, does FMLA encompass short term disability and/or vacation? For example, I get 12 weeks on short term disability, but could I also take unpaid FMLA on top of that, or is that now how it works? (I understand the point of FMLA is to allow workers with absolutely no leave benefits the ability to take time off, and I should be happy I get the partially paid STD, but just curious)
Meg Murry says
Everywhere I’ve worked, FMLA and STD ran concurrently. So you could take up to 12 weeks for the birth of the baby – with 6 weeks paid at some amount for STD, then the rest is unpaid FMLA (or you could use vacation time to be paid).
One confusing thing to watch for: one company where I worked offered longer paid times for STD – for instance, after 1 year you got 4 weeks paid STD and 4 weeks at 50%, after 5 years 6 weeks 100% paid STD and 6 weeks 50%, etc. The catch, though, is that’s only for STD lengths approved by your doctor/insurance company. So maternity is still only 6 week for uncomplicated v*gina or 8 weeks for a c-section – the remainder of the 12 weeks is still unpaid FMLA. If you had a different procedure that had a longer STD standard insurance period (say, you could get paid for that time off, but you didn’t get any extra time beyond what the doctor and insurance company set – you could only take unpaid FMLA after that.
Spirograph says
Yes, mine also ran concurrently; I asked about this specifically in hopes that I could take 18 weeks off rather than only the 12 FMLA protects, but no such luck. I work for a large corporation (although not in a legal capacity) and we get no paid maternity benefits. Company does pay for STD insurance, so I got 6 weeks at 60% pay for recovery after delivery, but the rest of my leave was unpaid. I saved my sick leave and PTO to use after I came back to work, and I’m very glad I did.
FVNC says
I’m in-house for very large company. Pregnancy leave was covered under STD: 100% pay for all medically necessary leave up to 6 months. Unless otherwise specified by a doctor, “medically necessary” leave meant 6 weeks for conventional birth and 8 weeks for c-section. Vacation time could also be applied. STD and FLMA ran concurrently. Women at my company take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. I took about 3.5, some of which was unpaid and technically unprotected (since I exceeded the 12 week FMLA leave).
I think 3 months paid leave and 4 weeks vacation is actually pretty generous, comparatively speaking (sadly).
KJ says
I’m a fed and we get nothing (no paid maternity leave or STD), so that sounds pretty good to me!
In House Counsel says
I’m in house at a large international company and pregnant w/ my 2nd. I received 8 weeks full paid thru STD (would’ve been 6 if I didn’t have a c-section) for my first and then cobbled together some additional weeks using PTO to get to almost 12 weeks. 12 weeks paid sounds pretty generous for the corporate world based on what other friends in-house have as well.
