Two white printed hooded baby towels

My youngest declared he was getting too big for his hooded towels (sniff). If you still have a little one, these organic cotton hooded towels are a great choice.

These soft towels are fluffy on one side and loop-knit terry on the other so your baby gets dry fast. At 29” x 29”, they’re large enough to wrap your baby and are great for everyday or even outdoor use. They’d also make a great addition to a baby shower gift basket — just add a few other essentials like washcloths, diapers, and wipes.

A set of two Burt’s Bees Baby hooded towels is available at Amazon (you can also buy just one) and comes in several options.

Psst: Looking for info about nursing clothes for working moms or tips for pumping at the office? We’ve got them both…

Threads about Mayhem yesterday made me realize how close we are to summer break. A few years ago or so, someone posted their daily list for their kids who were home all day. I remember it included some chores, some outside time, some activities before kids could turn on the tv. Anyone have that handy or want to share a daily list for their kids?

My kids will be 10 and 7.5 this summer, and we’re doing about half of the summer at home with parents working from home and half day camps. I’d like to make a daily schedule with stuff to do before tv so they can check the list and not pester us every 5 minutes.

Anyone have happy ending stories about kids who – to be blunt – don’t really show talent for anything in the extracurricular realm? My kid is terrible at ball sports and has a generally non-sporty friend group, but in the last few months a lot of her friends have found non-sports passions and achieved significant success in those areas, e.g., a violinist joining a selective ensemble, a friend making a competition dance team, a friend getting cast as the lead in a community play. She also doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of natural aptitude for the arts (she tried out for a play and didn’t even get cast, despite having taken several theater classes and preparing hard for the audition) although it’s less obvious than it is with sports. I know it’s too early to worry she won’t find anything to do, but the last few months have just been kind of hard with so many kids we know finding something they love and seeing the results of their hard work and that not happening for her, despite her also trying and working hard.

She’s also reaching the stage where she’s showing less interest in things she’s not good at. For a few years in early elementary school she was a happy joiner who’d do anything and didn’t care that she was terrible, but now she wants to quit things where she’s obviously bad which is… most things. I assume this is normal, but I worry a little bit about her dropping out of activities completely.

Debating between two elementary schools. Our district is a lottery system based on a randomly assigned number. DS got into my last choice “safety” school (School A). It was the only one I didn’t visit. I only added it because a fellow parent as kid’s preschool send their older kids and loved it.

We got an offer from my 3rd choice school (School B). It rated slightly better academically but logistically it’s over the river and through the woods to get there. We’re eligible for bussing to School B, but not for School A. However, it’ll take about 30 minutes to get home from School B taking the (MTA) bus + 15 min walk vs 15 mins on the subway from School A. I feel like I should choose the slightly better school, but with an 1hr+ commute for both DH & me, I just don’t want to. Thoughts, wise hive?

Crowd poll on bedtimes: how old are your kids and when do they sleep?

I’ll start:
They need to be out the door for school by 7:30am.
Almost 7 1st grader: ideally asleep by 8, we wake then at 7am
Almost 9 3rd grader: we try for 8:30 but protests until 9. We wake them at 6:55.
11.5 y/o 5th grader: between 9:30-10, I wake them at 7:10.

On the weekends, bedtimes are the same-ish, but youngest wakes up 6:30-7, middle around 7:30-8, and oldest would sleep to noon if we let her. She also stays up a bit later on weekends.

FWIW middle school starts 45 min later for my oldest. She’s more than ready!

my almost 7 year old’s bday is coming up and when asked what she wants for her bday she said “a phone.” she obviously isn’t getting one, but it makes me sad that this is what her immediate response was. i asked her what she would do with it and she said call people. i reminded her that she is always welcome to call someone with my phone. i used to ask for barbies or some toy or whatever. though my kids rarely see commercials or catalogues, so i guess idk how they would even know what toys to ask for.

how about tips for getting elementary schoolers to sleep later? while i do appreciate that i am no longer dragging my screaming children out of bed at 6:45am and that they wake up on their own, they’ve started waking up at 6 (or a little before) and these are kids who used to wake up. more at like 7/7:15. i’d love for them to sleep until at least 6:30. last night we had a major dance party/obstacle course before bed, put them to bed half hour later and they were still up at like 5:59.

Can I just say that I am all for kids having independence to get around, but I have serious doubts about electric scooters for kids. The preteens in my neighborhood are flying around fairly busy streets on these, often with no helmets, and it’s terrifying how many near misses I’ve seen. Can we go back to walking or bikes or self-propelled scooters please.

Without going into it, I just feel so defeated this AM. I know it’s my anxiety, May madness, a not-ideal AM with kids (solo parenting), and a few other things. It doesn’t help that work is also demanding more of me than I can feel like I can give.

Any ideas for how to get a toddler to stop hitting people? She has bitten a classmate for the last two days, and has done it at least once a week for the last few weeks.

We have been reading teeth are not for biting and singing song about not bitting, but it doesn’t seem to help. She is 20 months old. Daycare hasn’t said anything concerning about it, but I’m really worried.

Any tips for helping a baby overcome an early wake up when he’s clearly still tired? He’ll often wake between 4:30 and 6:00 only to instantly and deeply fall back asleep in our arms. Very cute and sweet, but not so practical on weekday mornings. Crib transfers don’t seem to work well at that hour. He’s almost six months.

Random towel/robe recommendation: you may have noticed that it is surprisingly hard to find terrycloth hooded bathrobes for toddlers/little kids — lots of fleece options, fewer terrycloth ones (especially if you are a person who avoids Amazon and doesn’t want to spend $80 on a Pottery Barn one). A reddit thread told me it was because in the US, most robes are classified as “sleepwear” and therefore need to be flame-retardant, which terrycloth isn’t.

Anyway, I have been ordering my kids’ robes from Vertbaudet, a French website that also ships to the US, and they are super high quality and reasonably priced.
