It’s mid-November — and while it may feel weeks away, the holidays have a habit of catching me off guard, especially if my gifting includes Advent calendars.
There are so many fun options this year beyond the usual chocolates. Here’s an Advent calendar that includes 24 pairs of colorful socks. Patterns range from stripes to snowmen to flaming burgers. These socks fit men’s shoe sizes 8–12 and have reinforced heels and toes so they’ll last through the holidays and beyond.
Happy Socks’ 24-Pack Crew Socks Advent Calendar is $260 at Nordstrom.

I’m starting to think about presents for my kids. I have a 10 yo who is a voracious reader and a 7 yo who is just becoming an independent reader. Would a kids Kindle Paperwhite be a good gift? It looks like we could check out ebooks from our library in addition to whatever comes with the Kindle kids subscription. Any experiences?

Yes, this sounds like a great gift! My 2nd grader asked for and is getting a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas; each of my older kids already has one (but we’re also going to get a new one for my daughter, who’s currently using the first one I bought for myself 11 years ago). They read on them nearly every night while winding down at bedtime. I think all the newer ones have “warm” color and dark mode option, but if not, you definitely want those if it’s likely the kids will read at night. We didn’t get the kids bundle, don’t have a kids subscription and don’t miss it, there’s plenty of content available from the library (which is exclusively where I source kids’ ebooks). I just have “family library” accounts set up for each of them within my Amazon account. The kid accounts keep stats and my kids are very proud of their hundreds of hours of reading.
Our library uses the Libby app, which I like, and for which I have an account anyway for *my* Kindle Paperwhite. The library ebook selection is good and graphic novels render well on the paperwhites. My biggest gripe, which is very minor, is that it takes about 10 clicks to get a book to my kids’ Kindles. I have to check out the book on Libby & send to Kindle, go to my Amazon account’s “manage content & devices” select the book, and then check each kid’s account that I want to add it to. I can do it all from my phone in a few minutes so it’s obviously still much faster than a trip to the library, but I wish Amazon didn’t bury the menu. You can have multiple accounts on the same family share an ebook license — for example, both my Kindle kids like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and I can just add a single check-out to both of their accounts.
Note that if you don’t get the kids bundle, you should still get a cover/case to go with the Kindles. There are lots of fun after-market options, but make sure you get the right size for your “generation” of Kindle because they’ve changed slightly a couple times.

I vote no; my 10 year old won’t read ebooks. If they have an iPad they can read bios there if they are interested.
That said, it’s a novelty if you are looking for a gift.
My kids are getting an instant printing camera.
