my first grader just got invited to a bday party in February for a kid for a kid turning 8 in first grade. i knew that people where we live redshirt, but this is bananas!
question for the hive. kids were invited to and we RSVPed “yes” to bday party for person A. a few weeks later we then received an invitation for a bday party for person B at the same time. person A’s party is outdoors. is it rude to explain the situation to person B and say that we’d love to come, but already committed to this other party and can only come if the weather is bad? person B’s mom and I are strong acquaintances, and I think trying to become better friends (she asked me if I wanted to attend a certain school event with her, but I was out of town, so I couldn’t. our daughters are in the same class this year, but we see the family all summer at the pool.).
i posted yesterday about kiddo needing tongue tie fix and will need to do intense tongue exercises pre and post op. she is unfortunately VERY resistant to doing her speech at home. fortunately she is a delight for her practioners. i was thinking of using a rewards chart, where for every 10 times she does her speech (this will have to be 3 times a day), she will earn a dollar that can be spent at the bookstore (she is a voracious reader). for those of you with multiple kids, how do you implement rewards charts with one kid and not the other? she is a twin, and while I do strongly believe that they are two separate individuals with different needs, I am not sure at age 6 it is realistic or reasonable for one to do this and not the other. her sister also goes to speech, and has speech HW but doesn’t need the tongue tie fix. i actually don’t love the idea of reward charts bc i feel like sometimes in life you have to just do things you don’t want to, but given her personality and our current struggle to get her to do speech, i think this might work well
Spanish Immersion School Advice – I’m pretty excited my daughter won the “lottery” for our school district’s Spanish immersion school. The kindergarten class will be made up of students from: 1/3 Spanish speaking homes, 1/3 “other” primary language speaking homes, and 1/3rd English only speaking homes. Based on class size, I suspect my daughter is 1/10 of the English only students in her class. I’m pretty surprised we got in, we’re in a very large school district and the only things I’ve heard in passing from other people is that it would be so rare that we’d win a kindergarten spot.
I’m excited she’ll have the exposure to dual immersion from a cultural awareness aspect and if she continues with the program through HS she’d earn college credits for being bilingual & biliterate.
I’m curious if any moms with kids in a similar schools have any advice to help us prep? I had one colleague who’s kids in are in a similar school in a neighboring district and they recommended having my kid watch cartoons in Spanish.
Need some reassurance that this is OK – I post from time to time about my recently-turned-4-year-old.
He bit someone in his class yesterday. This has never happened before (at home or at school), and it was a result of him being startled/scared because a classmate accidentally fell on him. Fortunately, the other kid was fine. The teacher spoke to him about it, as did we, and he gets what he did was wrong, and more importantly, what the right options are in that scenario. I wouldn’t be as upset but there was another incident of him hurting a classmate a few months ago when they were playing outside (he wasn’t *trying* to hurt them, more curious of “what would happen if…”), so I’m hoping this isn’t some pattern, but just normal preschool behavior while figuring out boundaries.
He doesn’t get aggressive generally, but generally has a low frustration tolerance, which is definitely improving.
I live in DC and am thinking about possible trips in the area over the next few years with my 17 month old. What is a good age to visit Sesame place? Dutch wonderland? Any other places within a 4ish hour drive of DC that are good for toddlers or preschoolers? I figure the historic stuff in Philly will be an elementary school age trip
My cousin is supposed to start a new job this week, but she has norovirus including her DH and twin toddlers. Everyone is miserable and it sounds absolutely awful. She has grocery delivery and her elderly parents live nearby but she doesn’t want to expose them. What can I do to help?
Feeling like an absolute failure, health-wise. I am 41 and have started to notice a couple of troubling things regarding my health. I have focused so much on my career, my three kids, and basically everything but me that I have neglected to really take care of myself over the past 5 or so years. I am Doing The Thing and scheduled all of my overdue appointments (internist, OBGYN, dermatologist, dentist) even though I know at least two of those appointments are going to give me news I really do not like.
My main concern is high cholesterol and heart health. I’m guessing my LDLs are fairly high, due to both genetics and dietary choices. I don’t want to take a statin but I feel like that’s just going to be something I have to do, but before my physical in two months, I want to start incorporating some healthful habits.
I want to clean up my act regarding food (just generally better for me – more veggies, less red meat and dairy) and exercise. I feel like I’m on the go from 5:30 AM to 11:00 PM, though, and I don’t think there’s a ton of extra time in my day, so something is going to have to be put aside for a while. I have never been the type of person to appreciate the little things that build up – I’ve always been a Go Big or Go Home person (which is probably why no big lifestyle changes have ever stuck).
Would love any thoughts or tough love or experience to help me get over this hump!
Hugs to everyone in higher ed or with loved ones in higher ed. This federal funding stuff is crazy.
