Whoa: I do not think Freya had a nursing bra the last time I looked at nursing bras, because I definitely would have tried it. (My favorite underwire nursing bra was the reader-recommended Elomi.) Ladies, we haven’t talked nursing bras for a while — any new favorites beyond old favorites like Bravado and Elomi? The pictured bra is $70, and available in sizes 30DD-38G. I’m still pregnant (39 weeks!) but have had nursing bras since ~33 weeks and I ****love**** my Coobie bra. even more than the Bravado. The sizing is very general – in fact the bras only come in two sizes – so it’s been good as things continue to change. I ended up ordering more and sizing up because I was borderline on size, and right now it’s the only bra I wear.
MSJ says
Yep, I only had one proper nursing bra (an Elle McPherson soft cup one that was pricey but only ok) . The rest were all coobies. My size kept fluctuating throughout pregnancy and nursing that coobies becane the most comfortable, convenient and affordable option. And the liners are great back up milk absorbers. I admit that an underwire one would have given me a better shape, but the coobies worked fine.

I am 34 weeks and so tempted to go get nursing bras, but know I should wait to make sure I know what size I am going to be. My normal bras are getting tight though. What to do, what to do.
Lyssa says
This might not work for everyone (I’m pretty small), but I wound up getting a package of those extenders (the 2-3 inch things that hook into your bra hooks to make the band longer – I think that you can usually find them in the lingerie section or craft/sewing section of department stores) and wearing them on my bras as I got bigger. Obviously, it’s not a perfect solution if your cups are running over, but it was cheap and made them a lot more comfortable for longer.
HSAL says
I’m almost 37 weeks, and I bought a few new regular bras a couple months ago in a 36G. Recently they started getting tight in the band as my rib cage expanded, and I ordered some of the extenders for pretty cheap on Amazon. Definitely try that first if it’s tightness and not spillage. My only complaint on these is that it makes the straps more likely to slip off my shoulders, even after tightening them. I’ve bought one soft cup nursing bra just to have (36 J/K from Bravado, on sale at Zulily) but I’m not going to buy any more until shortly before I go back to work. I plan on nursing tanks only for as much of maternity leave as possible.

I just got a whole bunch of very inexpensive cotton bralettes in a larger size and wore them to death. Way more comfortable for me in late pregnancy than underwire. I also preferred them for nursing.

I’ll go ahead and talk you out of buying a nursing bra before your milk comes in: I went from a 34A/B pre-preg, to a 36C during pregnancy, to a 32DDD by the time I went back to work 6 months after my daughter was born. I definitely had cantaloupe-sized knockers for a month or two when my milk came in (and an oversupply problem), and I just lived in Target nursing tanks.

I hate to sound like I’m really pushing the Coobies, but I was in your shoes a few weeks ago and that was the perfect solution for me. they pull over your head, only come in regular or large, and kind of grow with you. I measured myself at a 36D which was on the high end of regular, but ended up liking the large better. They are great for pregnancy because of the flexible sizing and the fact that the bottom band does not roll (don’t know about you, but I don’t have ANY flat space between my br**sts and belly at this point.) They’re only about $25 online so it’s not a huge investment. And then you’ll have something for nursing immediately after birth!

Help! I need someone to talk me through sleep training. My baby is a year old and wakes up 2-4 times a night and its killing me. She used to sleep through the night until 4 months, so I know its possible. Part of the issue is that she still nurses at night. I have tried giving her a bottle instead of nursing and have tried to have my husband give her a bottle but she cries bloody murder. We have been trying the Weissbluth approach, but I might be too bleary-eyed to know what I am doing anymore. I feeling like I am failing and just need someone to tell me what to do. Adult supervision!
CHJ says
Oh lady, you need sleep! We went through this right around 1 year too, where DS’s sleeping seemed to be getting worse, not better. I know it gets a bad rap, but I highly recommend Dr. Ferber’s book. He has a whole section on weaning from night nursing that worked really well for us. DS was a diehard night nurser, too, but even he got the hang of the sleep thing in a relatively short amount of time.
Good luck and hang in there! You and your baby will both feel a million times better once everyone is sleeping.

Hi DC Mom! I’m not an expert, but I’ve read tons of sleep stuff. First, I will say you should ask your pediatrician if ok to night wean. At 1 year old, my guess is yes, but if you ask it’ll be good so then you know from a medical perspective your daughter does not NEED the bottle at night. The older they get, I think full extinction is the best approach b/c your presence may make them more upset as they get older and more aware of what’s going on. However you know your baby best! It’s very important to be consistent with sleep training so you and your husband should talk and have a plan, and then stick with it for at least a week!
Anon says
I know someone who hired a night nurse and went on “vacation” (stayed at a hotel with her husband) for a few days. Sometimes the sleep deprivation is too much. You could also book a hotel for you for two nights and have husband put her down and feed her in the middle of the night.
Natasha says
Having my husband put the baby to bed with a routine (brush teeth, story, song, down) was key for us getting baby to sleep through the night. Granted, we didn’t sleep train until 14 months, but it worked wonderfully for us when we were ready.
RDC says
OMG I have no idea but right there with you. DS is 9.5 months and used to be a great sleeper but is getting worse and worse. DH is traveling this week – usually he’s more successful at getting DS back to bed so this week has been brutal … and it’s only Tuesday.
Sleep Deprived says
My 5 month old has been sleeping terribly for the past 6 weeks. He wakes up every 30-45 min for the first two hours after bedtime and cries uncontrollably. He’ll refuse the bottle and breast but once he has calmed down he will quickly drink 2-3 oz ans go back to sleep. This repeats about 3 times until he is finally asleep for 4-5 hours. Then he will wake up crying and want milk and go back to sleep. What’s with the uncontrollable crying within the few hours right after bedtime? We have tried offering him bottle and breast repeatedly throughout the day but he is not interested. He cries when I try to nurse him but will take a bottle and drink 1-2 oz here and there. What gives? How do I get him back to the breast? And how can I get him to drink more throughout the day so he doesnt scream at night? (And is he even hungry or is there something else that could be going on?). Its been 6 weeks and hasnt resolved on its own. My husband and I are so tired all the time now.
Anon S says
Sleep Deprived, are you familiar with the 4 month sleep regression? Sounds like that’s what your little one went through. Are you practicing paced bottle feeding? For a breast fed baby, it’s good to practice paced bottle feeding so they don’t start preferring the bottle over a breast. There are you tube videos out there on how to do it. What time is bedtime? Could be that he’s overtired. I highly doubt he’s hungry at night, it sounds like he has an eat to sleep association. Perhaps you could first consult with your ped to make sure that you can drop some feeds at night. He’ll make up for it during the day.
What’s his nap routine like?
anne-on says
Just curious – has he nursed well before? My son had a mild tongue tie that allowed him to nurse moderately well, but at about 4-5 months when he hit a growth spurt he wasn’t able to get enough milk and strongly preferred bottles. Might be worth checking with your pediatrician about, my lactation consultant didn’t catch it and it became an issue requiring feeding/speech therapy when we figured it out around 2.
Anon says
Whenever my kids were like this it was teething. Basically they were hungry and woke up wanting to nurse but when they nursed in made their gums sore. Try Advil about a half hour before nursing to sleep I. The evenings to see if that helps a bit. It could also be that he needs a quiet place to eat in the daytime. Around 6 months many babies become much more engaged with the world around them. Mine would only nurse if they were alone in the nursery with me, anywhere else or anyone else being there was much too exciting.
Anon S says
Hi moms! I’ve been exclusively breast feeding my 5 month old thus far, but I want to get some formula for backup for when I go back to work next month. What formula do you moms out there use and what made you pick it? Thanks!
Meg Murry says
Our daycare provided formula for free (part of USDA meal reimbursement) so we started with that, and luckily, baby drank it.
MSJ says
I used Baby’s Only Dairy (organic) and found the best price to be from Swansons online. My sister did some pretty exhaustive research so I ended up deferring to her. There are some great options in Europe (holl /hipp) but it’s too difficult to get in the US.
anon says
We use Target (both the one that is more like Enfamil or the one that is more like Similac). We are happy with the nutrition information and aren’t that picky about organic, etc.
KJ says
Regular formula made my baby barf and barf and barf and barf so we used Nutramigen which is better for babies with a dairy sensitivity. It’s expensive, though, so I wouldn’t start there.
Jen says
And Nutramigen smells like old cheese and vomit. We had the baby on it for ~3 months as a supplement because she couldn’t tolerate milk or soy protein. THANK GOODNESS she outgrew it at ~5 months.
My old insurance company did not cover it, but after January i had new coverage and they did cover it. Thank goodness because it’s super expensive and I had been planning to breast feed (which I did, but couldn’t do exclusively). Around 7 months we switched to enfamil/ store brands thereof as a supplment to breast milk. Month 10.5-11.5 was exclusively formula, and then at 11.5 months we started add in cow milk.
VKJ says
Ask your ped to give you samples! I explored formula for the same reason, and called for their recommendation. I talked to the nurse and sent my husband by to pick up the boxes of formula they offered. The one we sampled and stuck with I believe was Similac for Supplementing. We didn’t use if for long but I liked that the purpose was in conjunction with br**st milk. Good luck!
CHJ says
We used Earth’s Best Organic. I wanted something organic, and that’s what the Whole Foods near my house carried at the time. DS seemed to do well with it, so we just used the one brand until he was done with bottles.
Anon S says
Has anyone used the honest company’s formula?
KJ says
I have this bra and wear it routinely, even though I stopped nursing over 5 months ago. I think it’s relatively pretty for a nursing bra and comfy too.
Quail says
I know that this is a small (hehe) complaint but I have not found many nursing bra options for my a/b cups. I have two small bravados but that seemed to be it as far as clip-down bras, and I didn’t find any underwire. I also have a few coobies – but I just want to wear a normal-ish bra while I have cleavage (for the first time in my life…)and still be able to pump/nurse. oh well. Only a few more months.
anona says
You can also just get a few regular demi-cup or soft-cup bras, and either slide the strap off your shoulder or just kind of fold the cup down out of the way when you need to nurse or pump. It eventually ruins the bra, but I’ve never really had any trouble with pumping or nursing in a regular bra.
Natasha says
This exact Freya is my absolute favorite nursing bra. I don’t want t wear any others since I tried it on and have since bought another one. It’s super comfortable and supportive, but I think it helps that I was properly fitted at Nordstrom (32F, yikes) and all my other bras are 34DD, 36D, etc. I guess I didn’t know how bras are supposed to fit and feel, with most of the support from the band. It felt tight at first, but once I got used to it, it’s so much better an more flattering.
