“Digital” gloves abound these days — designed to let you play with your smartphone while you’re wearing them — but I find that I still prefer these fingerless glove/mitten combos, because they’re the easiest way to stay warm while also having nimble fingers for buckling and unbuckling strollers, carseats, and more. Another bonus: If you’re holding hands, walking with someone who refuses to wear gloves (husband, child, whomever), you can interlock fingers and “share” the mitten part of the glove. These colorful gloves are 40% off at Nordstrom — they were $28 but are now marked to $16.80. Echo Pop Top Gloves (L-2)Sales of note for 9.10.24

Silly question for y’all – I have a one year old who recently discovered how fun it is to pull toilet paper off the rolls in the bathrooms. What does one do to avoid this? Just put it on the back of the toilet for the next 5 years? I suppose she’ll learn “no” soon too, but for the time being she can make a mess really quickly!
mascot says
Don’t let her play in the bathroom unattended or keep the roll out of reach. You can keep reinforcing that this isn’t something to play with, but realistically it’s on you to keep her out of it.
hoola hoopa says
+1
Turning them around so that they roll towards the wall doesn’t prevent it completely, but it makes the spinning off a bit more work and gives you more time to nab them.
My response would be really different for a 3+ year old, but this is just part of having a 1 year old. You can’t really prevent it or teach them not to do it.
ELL says
I put it up high. Agree with others that this pretty much an impossible thing to teach a child of that age not to do.
NewMomAnon says
I put it up high. I have been getting the really big rolls, and they are too big to spin easily so you have to carefully extract a few sheets of TP at a time. This trick only works until the roll gets small enough to spin though.
There are special toilet paper dispensers that limit the number of sheets you can take out; they cost $40-$50 and I’m not sure it’s worth the investment to avoid putting your TP up high for a couple years.
OP says
OP here – thanks all! I’m really not letting her “play unattended in the bathroom” – just recently unrolling the toilet paper is her FAVORITE thing to do while I run her bath and get that set up. I’m starting with the idea of just turning it to the wall. genius. And then… adapting.

I’m going to need a new smartphone soon, and I think that the main thing that I’m really interested in is getting a good, fast, easy to use camera for pictures of my baby and toddler. Any recommendations? I’ve got an i-phone 4s now, and I think it would be easiest to stay in the i-phone family, though I’m not really a major fan. I would like to keep the cost somewhat low, and have no interest in having the newest and shiniest; really the only feature I care much about is the camera. Anyone have a smartphone camera that they love or hate?
Lyssa says
Whoops, I thought that my post yesterday on this got moderated out of existence, but I guess it eventually appeared later in the day. Sorry for the repetition!
Meg Murry says
That’s ok – I replied yesterday but I am also interested in this. I feel like all of the reviews are “OMG this is the fanciest very best ever” and then everything else is “this is complete crap” but I can’t tell. I don’t want “fanciest best ever” but I don’t want something I’m going to hate in 6 months like my current phone. I’m leaning toward buying something that was “OMG, best ever” 1 generation ago because that will still be an upgrade to me.
Right now I’m leaning toward a Samsung S5, but I’m a bit nervous because last time I got a slightly out of date Samsung (I bought an S3 right when the S4s came out) there was a big update to the S3 that made the phone super buggy, and then Samsung never did any updates after that.
Anyone else care to weigh in? For me, priorities are
1) availability of a durable case (I drop my phone pretty much daily)
2) battery life (willing to compromise a little if wireless charging is standard)
3) lots of storage space (and/or SD card)
4) price
5) not a phablet
MDMom says
I have the Galaxy S6 and part of the reason I sprung for it is I heard the camera is a significant upgrade from the S5. I never had the S5 though so I can’t say. I think the S7 will come out fairly soon so you may be able to get a cheaper S6 then. Iphones are known for having good cameras. I liked the camera on my 5S, but then it crashed for no apparent reason. But the camera was good.
PregLawyer says
I just posted on yesterday’s thread, before seeing the re-post here. I have an iphone 6 (not the giant one, just the normal-sized one) and its camera is a HUGE upgrade from the 4 and even the 5. The picture quality is really really good. Storage is pretty good. I had about 500 photos and maybe 20 30 -second videos stored on my phone before it got too full. Then I just transferred everything to my hard drive. It holds a charge all day even though I’m on it all the time for work.
Re: durability – just buy a durable case. Lots of options.

We recently got our son to transition from taking his milk in a bottle to a straw cup. He’s 22 months old. I realize it’s very late, but we tried many times before and he just wasn’t ready. Now, after making the switch so easily, two weeks in he is now refusing to drink any milk at all. It’s been three days.
Is it worth battling him to drink it? He eats lots of eggs, yogurt and cheese so I’m not too worried about his dairy intake. Is milk really that important? Or should I just keep offering it and let it go if he doesn’t want it?
Anonymous says
Let it go. Oh my gosh there are so many other things to fight about. Keep offering milk. He’ll drink it eventually.
mascot says
Agreed, don’t get too worried. Milk is an easy source of protein, fat, and calcium, but not the only source. If he’s getting that through other foods, I’d say he will be fine.
hoola hoopa says
+1 Definitely fine.
I disagree that he’ll drink it eventually if you keep offering, although you can offer if you want.
Pogo says
My nephew and niece both went from breastfeeding to just drinking water… I’ve never seen them drink anything else – no juice, no milk, nothing. Their mom is not a big milk-drinker, though, so maybe that’s part of it?
My mom was militant about milk drinking because she was convinced that by doing so I’d stave off osteoporosis later in life. I had to have a big glass of milk at dinner every day I lived at home, not even kidding.
kc esq says
Probably not worth fighting. Around that age, my kids took to “cocoa” because we read about it in a story. By cocoa, I mean I put their milk in the microwave for about 10 seconds so it’s not cold and if I’m feeling like it, shake a dash of unsweetened cocoa powder in it. They don’t really notice whether the cocoa is in there or not.
Jmm says
Thanks all for the reality check. Now to convince my husband who always battles with my toddler over food.

Get the book, “How to get your kid to eat but not too much”
Read it. Make your husband read it. Fighting over food will stop.

I’m on a quest for maternity pants. I thought I was good here because this is #2, but I busted out all my old maternity clothes and am lacking in the casual/weekend wear department.
I’m a pre preg curvy tall size 10/12. I have one pair of bootcut maternity jeans that works now but will not last another month, much less another 5 months. I have lots of dresses and will probably forgo pants altogether after things warm up in May. I have leggings and tunics that I have mainly been living on (I work from the house most times, and have a maternity suit for when I do not) but I really need some kind of jeans.
Anyone have any skinny jeans (or jeggings? not typically my style but I am giving myself a break in that I’m pregnant!) that work well for pregnant pears? I never really found great skinny jeans for my non preg self, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist… or other options?
Bonus points if available at Nordies as I have $120 in gift cards to burn…
BKDC says
Not jeggings, but I’ve been loving these: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ingrid-isabel-ponte-knit-skinny-maternity-pants/3497740
Like you, I’ve been having a hard time finding maternity pants (I’m 5′ and petite, quality maternity clothes seem non-existent. I’ve been able to scrunch or cuff the pants, which has allowed me to wear them without alteraton.

I am with you!! Also a tall size 12, and I am finding it impossible to find good maternity clothes. Nordstrom seems to be out of everything above a size 8 in maternity. Argh!

I had some gap skinny maternity jeans that I really liked (purchased last summer).

Last post of the day. Wanted to put in a plug for the Sarah Wells Annie breast pump bag. So worth the money. Its beautiful and incredibly practical. And if you buy it at buy buy baby or bed bath and beyond (online) you can use a 30% off coupon. It’s not as big as some of the reviews made it out to seem, but still worth it.

So I’ve told my story on here for a little while, but there’s been a development I don’t feel ready to share with anyone (outside of my husband, obviously) irl.
I recently gave birth to our first kiddo; however, severe post-birth complications mean I can never become pregnant again. This was devastating for us as we had always planned on a couple kids, but we are strong and are working on moving on and were starting to look at adoption options.
A family friend approached us with a offer to be a surrogate. She’s basically the perfect candidate, and one who would be doing this fully out of the goodness of her heart.
This is a game changer… We aren’t making any decisions for a few months now, but it’s a whole new option.
JJ says
I just got goose bumps reading that. How wonderful. Even for you just to know that’s an option.
Clementine says
Thank you!
Katala says
+1 on the shivers. That’s really amazing, how wonderful to give you another source of hope to complete your family when and if you decide it’s right for you.
MDMom says
That is amazing! A woman I work with was recently a surrogate for her sister. It worked out great for them. This is thinking way way ahead, but make sure you research the surrogacy laws in your state. For some reason I think you are in DC? If so, then definitely check because it is my (limited) understanding that DC, MD, and VA have different surrogacy laws and this may affect what hospital you want the surrogate to deliver at. Consult with an attorney who has experience with it. But that’s all a future concern. Congrats on having this option!
Clementine says
Right now, I’m just totally in shock. We didn’t think this was an option for financial reasons. We’re still not totally sure of the financial viability, but this would make it much more realistic.
The second part is that the person offering has a relationship with us where they were absolutely not expected to do anything like this- she is approaching us with this offer. I’m still figuring out if I will be okay with someone else having my baby, but my gut says yes…
Thanks for letting me process out loud.
MomAnon4This says
I am so happy for you even to consider it!
I had never thought of surrogacy from YOUR perspective (instead of the uterus mom) until I met a mother who’d needed a surrogate in my Moms Group (in DC – the PACE Group). At that point, I was just so happy that she had the chance to have her family, whatever it took. I hope that your experience will continue to be hopeful and positive!
And whatever it happens — it sounds like you feel relieved that there’s a new door and possibly a new hallway in your life, when before you felt options closing. I am so glad for that – even just that can be life-changing.
Good luck as you consider all your options but mostly with relaxing and hopefully enjoying your new baby and motherhood!
Clementine says
Thank you!
And honestly- I had only considered BEING a surrogate until (in a span of less than 8 hours) I went from normal post-partum mom who had a slight fever to being in the ICU being told that I needed a hysterectomy NOW or there was a good chance I would not be around tomorrow.
I know that we always say life can change in an instant, so much so that it’s a cliche, but it is so absolutely true.
CapHillAnon says
Oh wow. That is fantastic–even if you don’t end up following that path, I can imagine how good it would be to have it as an option. I’ve been following your story and sending good thoughts for continued recovery for you and your little guy.
Clementine says
We don’t know what we’ll end up doing, but exactly. Just having this open to us…
I am absolutely LOVING being a mum. Moreso than I ever realized. I miss work like crazy, but Baby Clem is just the coolest kid to be around. It’s probably good I didn’t know this when I was 21- :-)
