Organizing Thursday: Avery Low Bookrack

This bookshelf is just like the ones in my kids’ old preschool.
Unlike a standard bookshelf where you can only see the spine, this bookshelf displays the entire cover, making it easier for younger kids to choose their own books. You can fill it with old favorites along with new ones for them to discover. This bookshelf is also Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning that it emits fewer chemicals, keeping your indoor air cleaner.
The Avery Low Bookrack is $249 at Pottery Barn Kids.

I know it’s late in the day, but my 12 yo just got home from school. She had a Spanish test today. I happened to notice that she’d written on her arm. She saw I saw and tried to hide it. I was suspicious so I demanded to see it. It’s a bunch of Spanish words. She swears she wrote them on her arm after the test. I do not believe her. Wwyd?
In case it matters, it’s a high school credit class and will go on her transcript for colleges.
I just shipped a whole bunch of my second grader’s toddler and little kid books to our baby nephew. I’ve never been overly attached to or sentimental about stuff, but man, it feels so nice to be able to pass things on to a family member rather than just dumping at goodwill or the library.
A slight variation on the “tracking” discussion: I fill out a spreadsheet about each kid’s day. Yes, I am extra, but also for various reasons I need to have better info than my memory can supply.
I’m hoping these notes might become helpful someday for getting diagnoses/supports for my likely neurodivergent kid. Parents who have been through or are in that process, is there anything you would recommend tracking?
I’ve been thinking about the poster from Thanksgiving whose husband had extreme financial anxiety about the holidays. How’s it going, friend? Thinking of you!
My 4 year old really, really wants to paint some cut out cardboard and has been asking to for days. I do not have the bandwidth to deal with paint chaos, especially with her 2 year old brother. I usually love a messy kid activity (baking together, slime, kinetic sand etc) and I don’t know what it is about paint, but it gets to me. I don’t know if I’m asking for advice or encouragement or what your ugh activity is, but please share!
My whole household has had the flu in the last week (Flu A). I’d heard that this year’s vaccine wasn’t a great match but I was amazed at how well it worked at shortening the duration. My kids were all back to normal after 48 hours. I seem to be taking a little longer, but am now on Day 3 and feeling much better.
Definitely high fevers, though — we all hit 104 at one point or another. Thank goodness for ibuprofen.
Posted late in the day yesterday, so wanted to continue the discussion…what do you track during the year and how? I track my billable work hours, and roughly track my vacation days as well as the number of days kids are sick/snow days/ice days/etrc. I do track books I read and chapter books I read out loud to the kids. And, not really an end-of-year thing, but I do keep a spreadsheet with Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and wedding/baby shower gifts so I can avoid repeating gifts and can remember what dollar amount we settled on for things like “second cousin’s wedding.”
Others responded that they track books read, trips, high/lows of the year, and goals.
What do you like tracking? What have you tracked but decided isn’t worth it? What do you use to track – digital, paper journals, etc.? Do you track throughout the year or do a summary at the end?
Any recommendations for a stainless steel with silicone straw cup with handles that would be suitable to send to daycare for cows milk? Trying to reduce microplastics and it’s hard to find one with these attributes AND decent reviews. Also needs to be dishwasher safe.
Many of you are bakers- my husband loves peanut butter blossom cookies and has requested them for his upcoming birthday.
I used to make them with Skippy or Jif peanut butter, but this year we switched to natural peanut butter. You know, the kind that’s just peanuts and you have to stir it.
Will the cookies turn out ok if I use that, or should I go buy some skippy?
We got a bookcase like this for my toddler’s room for Hanukkah and he loves it!
Does anyone have one of the Melissa and Doug vending machine toys? Thoughts?
