Any fun plans / ideas for 4th of July with little ones (who go to bed before the fireworks will start)? It’s baby’s first 4th of July (he’s 7 months) and I’d like to do something fun, but have no idea what that would be. Maybe just an afternoon at the pool.
Famouscait says
Slightly off topic, but are babies typically afraid of fireworks? My little guy is 8 months, and joining us for the late-night festivities…
P.S. Many thanks to the person the other day who pointed me to the single-serve formula packets to use a long flight! That is going to work perfectly.

Bring earplugs just in case!
Meg Murry says
That was me! Those sticks are the best, even if they are a little pricy. They are convenient to keep in your diaper bag as well as a backup.
As far as babies and fireworks go, I think little babies are fine with them, as long as it isn’t super loud. Its generally toddlers (2-4) that freak out about them if they are going to at all.
FVNC says
Last year we took our 8 month old to our town’s street festival. There were lots of interesting sights and sounds for her, and I think she had fun.
CHJ says
Are there any parades nearby? Babies love parades. So much to see, music playing, other kids, etc.
We’re also considering keeping our two year old up for the fireworks. Normal bedtime is 7 and fireworks are at 9. Not sure if that’s a good idea or a terrible idea!
mascot says
In case anyone needs hearing protection for kids, we found some kid size protectors in the gun section of a outdoor/sporting goods store. Works great for fireworks and noisy sprinting events.
Spirograph says
Amazon also has some. We’ve gotten a lot of use out of ours…although lately it’s hit or miss whether the 2 yr old will wear them. He slept through fireworks without them on last year.
Telling the Bosses says
So I just realized that today’s going to be the day I tell my management team I’m pregnant. I’m 15 weeks and was planning on waiting for another 2 weeks or so, but looking at the vacation schedule and such, I realized this morning that this would be my last chance to tell them all at the same time (highly, HIGHLY preferred as it would not be cool in my office to tell one before the other) until basically August.
I don’t know if I’m looking for advice or just reassurance that this won’t somehow jinx my pregnancy.
Marilla says
It will be ok! I ended up telling my manager at just under 14 weeks, earlier than I had intended, as part of a total emotional meltdown over the fact that I had been expected to fulfil two job descriptions with four different sets of management expectations over the past couple of months. Tears were involved. He kind of just stared at me like, THAT’S GOOD NEWS! Why are you crying?
So the moral of the story is, don’t be like me, but even if you are like me, it totally works out ok anyway :)
Katarina says
My advice is to just rip the bandaid off and do it, 15 weeks is pretty far into your pregnancy. There is a (very low) chance of things going wrong at any point in your pregnancy, and at some point you have to announce, because everyone will know anyway. I was extremely nervous when I announced my first pregnancy, but everyone was happy and enthusiastic. I was worried about it hurting me professionally (both the announcing and the pregnancy) but it really did not.
ETA. I announce the first time at 13 weeks, and plan to announce the second time at 12 weeks on Monday. I tend to show early, and am ready to stop hiding my bump.
Telling the Bosses says
Agh. I so want to ‘rip the bandaid off’- I’m literally waiting for big boss to open their door and I’m going to pop in and just do it.
Famouscait says
I can’t recall exactly when I told my boss, but I had a similar situation in that I realized on the spot that I had to do it, and it was earlier than I wanted. It went well. I did ask him not to tell the rest of the staff, so that bought me a little more time to become comfortable with the news. He just followed my lead and let me tell the rest of the staff myself, a few weeks later. Good luck! And, congrats!
Carrie M says
It will be fine! I was so stressed about it, but it was not a big deal at all. You’re giving them happy news. Don’t feel any pressure to discuss your leave, or returning from leave, or any of the logistics. You have plenty of time to figure that all out. Congratulations!!
waiting says
good luck, and please report back! i’m doing it next week, as i’m 11 weeks with twins and my body is an entirely new shape…
Telling the Bosses says
Update: I did it! I sort of walked in, told the big boss and then just said ‘And this is what I am thinking for leave’ and laid out the (very favorable to me) game plan.
I then just told all my coworkers (we’re not a big office) in a very casual ‘btw- having a kid’ manner. I feel so relieved!!

Any tips for dealing with morning sickness? I don’t have my first appt. for another week so prescriptions aren’t an option yet.
layered bob says
transdermal magnesium (ie magnesium that you rub on your skin) and vitamin B-6. Those two seemed to work when I couldn’t stomach even ginger tea.
Telling the Bosses says
I had to eat at least every 3 hours, including at night. This was actually terrible as the last thing I possibly wanted to look at was food, but the times I got really sick were the times that I let myself go too long without eating.
Other things that helped slightly: strong mints, ginger, eating a very boring diet of only ‘acceptable’ foods, ice cold water
anon says
If you have a Trader Joe’s in your area, they make these ginger chews (which I sucked on like a hard candy) that helped me a bit in between Zofran doses.
EB0220 says
Yes! Those things got my through my first pregnancy. And, subsequently, I could not even look at them in my second pregnancy.
waiting says
drink as much water as you can (slowly) all day long, try not to let yourself get hungry, try preggie pops (sold on amazon), and if you need to, use medication as directed. i’m on diclegis and even though my insurance doesn’t cover it, it’s worth its weight in gold. if you go this route, you really need to take as directed — it’s much more effective if taken at the right times each day (and i had a few friends that weren’t told this and found it much less effective).
OCAssociate says
Unisom and B6 before bed. Worked miracles in my second pregnancy.
TBK says
+1 This is the same as a drug that’s available in Canada but not here — anyone remember what it is? There’s a specific dosage. You can find it online I think.
Katarina says
It is available here now. Diclegis.
anon says
I have heard of people doing this combo at a time other than before bed, and I would really not recommend it — Unisom is sold as a sleep aid and it REALLY knocked me out. As it turned out, though, just plain B6 helped me as much as the combo. And eating every hour, even just a couple rice cakes.

32 weeks. Have had great pregnancy so far, and stayed very active. Weight gain on the low end of the healthy range. No previous pregnancies. S0, no risk factors for pubic symphysis dysfunction, BUT, in the last two days, feel like my pelvis is going to split apart. Walking is painful. I wear a maternity belt while exercising, but can’t wear it comfortably at work. What else? Chiropractor? Get a referral to PT? Massage? Acupuncture? Lay in bed permanently because I can’t turn over? (hm probably not that last one?)
(was) due in june says
A friend of mine is where you are in her pregnancy and was having similar issues. Her obgyn said round ligament can feel like that and suggested that she go swimming (or floating). She went over the weekend and did very, very slow laps, sometimes with a kickboard, and said it was the first time in weeks she felt better. Maybe give that a try?
Preemie Mom says
I’m a very Nervous Nellie after my experience, but if you’ve been fine so far and very active and are suddenly feeling very different, I would recommend you go to the doctor (try to get in today given the holiday weekend). I started feeling strange toward the end of my 31st week (much more tired, and noticed decreased fetal movement), but thought I was crazy for thinking something was wrong – just chalked it up to advancing pregnancy. I then ended up in the hospital at 32+1 delivering due to a placental abruption. (Heavy bleeding at 32+1 was what caused me to go in to the hospital.) From what you describe, your symptoms are nothing, and for all I know the tiredness/decreased movement were not connected to the abruption (which as I understand can happen very quickly) but it never hurts to get checked out by a professional, in my opinion. (FWIW baby is very healthy and nearing a year old.) BUT I may just be overreacting – not sure what level of pain you’re in and if it’s clearly a joint/bone thing. Regardless, I hope you feel better!
RR says
Talk to your doctor. I had a couple friends with something called SPD I think that they described like you are describing. They had to get a special support belt thing.
...j says
I had this for two pregnancies, and found the belts to be just a different kind of uncomfortable. Limiting the LGP’s helped, as did swimming, and putting my feet up while at my desk at work.
layered bob says
thanks. Managed to squeeze in a very quick midwife visit over lunch – neither of us had time to talk in depth but baby is fine and this is apparently normal pubic symphysis pain – I can try whatever I want to treat it. My building has a pool so I will try swimming!
Preemie Mom says
Glad to hear! Hope you feel better!

Can anyone comment on how Old Navy baby sizing runs? For my kid, using Carter’s as a baseline, Baby Gap runs a little large.
Thank you!
anon says
I found it a little larger than Baby Gap
OCAssociate says
Agree, it’s generally a little bigger than baby gap/Carters, but Old Navy is also really inconsistent. Sometimes various outfits in the same size range from too small to too big on the baby.
Meg Murry says
+1 Old Navy is really inconsistent in general (I’ve taken 2 pairs of the exact same jeans in the same size into the fitting room and one was loose and the other tight) and it can make a huge difference when you are talking about tiny baby clothes.
In general though I’ve found it to be on the larger side rather than smaller side
anon says
I have found them to be shorter and wider than Carters, by far.
Meg Murry says
I’m trying to help a friend put together a baby registry. She is getting a lot of hand-me-down stuff, but what can you think of that you would NOT want hand-me-down or that is new and wasn’t available just a few years ago? Off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of is a Rock and Play (wasn’t around when my kids were little), new carseat and fresh bottles.
Anything you didn’t register for but wish you would have or that someone gave you that you now suggest everyone register for?
ANP says
Pacifiers if she plans to use them
Burp rags (I mean, of course she can make use of hand-me-downs here, but even a pack of cloth diapers would be good — and inexpensive)
Rock N Play for sure
Carseat for sure
Maybe a mattress? Depends on how picky she is.
Nosefrieda or snotsucker
Teething toys if she plans on registering for them
I would say bottles are OK to reuse but she should get new n!pples for them
If she plans to br3@stfeed, n!pple cream/lanolin and reusable pads
Msj says
All excellent ideas. Would just add diapers/wipes! Can never have too many.
