Every year, I plant a small container garden on my balcony. But my interest in caring for it wanes as the temperatures rise.
This self-watering planter might take one plant-care chore off my plate. This modern lightweight planter works both indoors and out — water your green babies from the bottom so they draw water up. It comes in five sizes and eight colors so you can find the right one for your plant and decor.
This self-watering planter from Room Essentials starts at $3 for a two-pack of 4” planters and goes up to $30 for a 20” one.

Word of warning that the plastic on this pot is very thin, and if your climate is anything like mine, will dry out immediately. Even with the self-watering feature.

I have a patio plant – a gardenia- in one of these in the Boston area and it does great. Same for when I bring it inside in the winter.

We are going to Legoland (NY) this weekend! Wish us luck. Will report back whether two full days there is too much or just right.

Have fun! I’m the person who recently went to Florida and posted about it and my kid still talks about how much fun it was.

Have fun!! If it turns out one day is enough, there’s probably a fair bit around there – ice cream shops open for the season? Storm King sculpture park?

Keep us posted! I’m about to book us a trip there for June, and was thinking of two nights (maybe travel + one half day and one full day).

Ugh left work early and got kid at daycare for a ped appointment and we got here and apparently the pediatrician is not scheduled to work today. They said they left a voicemail last week which I didn’t get. I think that’s due to an issue with my phone (long story) but I feel like it’s at least partly their fault because I logged into the patient portal today and it still showed the appointment. I asked why they didn’t cancel it and they said “we wanted to reschedule, not cancel.” Wtf.. if the doctor is not working that day you shouldn’t indicare we have an appointment with that doctor.

Do you go on your elementary kids’ field trips? On one hand, I’d love to spend a beautiful spring afternoon with my daughter. On the other, the idea of being thrown into supervising a group of kids I don’t know very well stresses me out. I remember my own mom doing it a handful of times. Just curious whether others do this, too.
Anon says
No because my daughter doesn’t behave well when I’m there. I don’t volunteer in her class for the same reason.
Boston Legal Eagle says
I signed up as a volunteer for my kid’s field day this year. It’s 3 hours at the end of May. TBD how it goes! I’m trying to do more with the school though, and it’ll at least be a change of pace from my day office job.

I do when it’s something I can fit into my schedule. My kids like it.
NYCer says
+1. I do when I can. I have always been happy to do it.
Spirograph says
Yes, when I can! If you’re going somewhere like a zoo museum where the class will split up, usually you’re asked to supervise a very small group, like only 3-4 kids. The teachers typically do a good job making groups where the kids get along and you don’t end up with the 4 most rambunctious ones all together. It’s pretty chill, you’re just there to do a bit of herding and sure the kids can find the bathroom and get back to the meeting spot on time.
I’ve typically had the option to either ride the bus with the kids or drive ourselves and I prefer to drive myself. The one time I rode the bus, it broke down and that was super fun with a whole bunch of kindergarteners.

Nope. My daughter doesn’t want me there. I was the same way as a kid, so I totally get it and let her have her space. On the rare occasion when I do chaperone for the sake of doing my part, I don’t take her group.
Anonymous says
I don’t. My kid’s classmates are all wonderful kids, but they all (my kid included) act like banshees on field trips and I can’t handle it. I think there are lots of other moms who are better suited to chaperone. If you want to, for it!

When did you take your kid to their first movie at a theater? My husband wants to take our 3.75-year old to see the Mario movie and I don’t think it will be fun. What do you all think?
Anon says
Definitely wouldn’t take a kid that young to that movie. My 5yo got a little bored towards the end (and usually he has a great movie attention span). It was decent but I didn’t *love* it like everyone else…and it took a while to get to the video game world so a toddler might be bored by the first 15-20 min. I think 7+ is better.
Per your question, we took both my 6 and 4yo to the Paw Patrol movie as their first trip. They both loved it.
Anonymous says
Yeah, that particular movie seems simultaneously boring and overly frenetic. I would pick something gentler for the first movie.
Anon says
My thoughts exactly! (I’m 7:43) Really slow start, then lots of craziness and violence and death threats. I think it’s mostly beloved by the 90s kids-now-parents.
Boston Legal Eagle says
Last summer for both kids – they were 3.75 and 6. We saw the minions movie. They both were good for the first hour, but that last half hour dragged. We did get them popcorn and candy, which of course made them happy.

We took our daughter to the movies for the first time at exactly that age and she was mesmerized. She was already watching movies at home, so we knew she could sit still that long. It was also a short-ish movie, around 90 minutes.
HSAL says
My kids all saw their first theater movie shortly after they turned 4 and did great. We took my almost 5s and 7 to Mario today and they loved it – might have been different if they were a year younger.

My daughter’s first movie was Lyle Lyle Crocodile at 4.5 (we’d read the books). It held her attention reasonably well, although I think I found it more enjoyable than she did (it’s a sweet movie!) and she got really upset at the part where Lyle gets shot with a tranquilizer dart because she thought he was dead. She started screaming DON’T DIE LYLE! WAKE UP LYLE! But I was able to calm her down quickly and the theater was nearly empty so we didn’t have to leave.
It’s interesting because it’s almost impossible to get her to sit through a whole movie at home. I think the only movie we’ve seen the full version of with her at home is Luca and that’s because she’s been to Italy and I’m learning Italian so she was VERY excited about seeing a movie set in Italy with Italian words. I think we’ve watched the first 10-15 minutes of Frozen, Moana and Toy Story probably a dozen times and never gotten her to stick with it. There’s something about the movie theater environment that does command their attention a little bit better, at least for my kid.

My two youngest’s first movie outing was going to see see the third How to Train Your Dragon movie when they were 2.75 and 5. It was fine, though the 2.75 year old sat in my lap the whole time. It was one of those $2 summer movie specials otherwise I wouldn’t have done it.
I think it really depends on your kid. If they won’t sit through a movie at home then they probably won’t sit through one in a theatre. Also I wouldn’t expect that you/your husband are going to enjoy the movie much. You might be aurprised, but manage your expectations.
