I’ve always found slides more comfortable than flip-flops. Here’s a fun pair for summer that allows you to dip your toe into the logo trend.
These lightweight slides are ready for the boardwalk. Like any slide, they have an open rounded toe and open back for slipping on and off. The textured leather upper features Coach’s signature “C” logo. The neutral colors — charcoal/black, multi (which has a white upper), and tan — will go from beach to urban errands.
These slides are $95 at Zappos. They come in whole sizes 5–11.

I just had our top candidate (truly a standout) accept an offer for a position that has been shockingly hard to fill. It’s an admin type job and also something that I think will fill in so many gaps in our department. I am so glad with how it worked out.
I am also so psyched that my little one can get vaccinated before we go to Disney this year!
Yay Friday!

A good admin is worth the wait! Great to hear!

For the mom who was asking about Moderna side effects in trial kids, we just got the unblinding call and MY KID GOT THE VACCINE!!! Happy tears over here. 4 years old, no side effects at all. She did have significant side effects (fever, fatigue, irritability) to her first MMR as a baby, for whatever that’s worth.

I thought this Boston doctor did a great Twitter thread comparing the pediatric vaccine data between Moderna and Pfizer, including side effects: https://twitter.com/roby_bhatt/status/1538571950389436419

That’s great news! My kid has gotten a fever after most vaccines, pretty much exactly how her ped has predicted. Hoping to get an afternoon appt, ideally on a Friday, so she has the night/weekend to recover just in case.

Checking in from first morning of potty training. My kid cried all morning and begged us to put his diaper back on. He peed in the corner one time but otherwise held it. He was so relieved when we put a pull up on him for nap time and immediately used it. Any tips for this afternoon??
Anon says
Resistance to using the toilet (which is different than showing interest but not always getting to the toilet in time) is generally a sign the child isn’t ready. Depending on the personality of your child you might be able to “break” them of their resistance so to speak, but if you have a stubborn child who digs their heels in, it can make the potty training process horrible and drawn out (ask me how I know). If your child is under 3 or even a young 3, I would just wait and try again in a few months.

If you have to go forward (I know people who did because of day care requirements, etc.) buy the Hanna Anderson training unders. They are very thick. My kiddo messed them on more than one occasion without any damage to clothes. Tell your kid they are cloth diapers. Let him go in them. Get two buckets of water and teach him to put the soiled underpants in a bucket of water and then how to clean them.
Is it more work than some magical one weekend and solved internet trend? Yes. But parenting is.
Anonymous says
FWIW, my kiddo resisted like that, but it was out of fear, not stubborness. She knew she had to go but was scared what would happen without a diaper. I’d try to be reassuring but firm.
Anon says
I’m the first Anon who said my kid was stubborn and it was definitely stubborness driven by fear for us as well. I think that’s common and happens in other contexts too (e.g., some very picky eating is driven by fear of new textures, etc.) I think fear actually makes it a harder thing to push past. To continue the food analogy, kids who are really terrified of new foods will starve themselves rather than eat, and that was definitely the case for my kid with potty training. but YMMV.

Update from OP — we backed off considerably for the rest of the weekend and did a combination of some naked time at home and some time in pull ups, and continued talking about the potty and trying to sit on it every hour or so. He peed in the potty 1 time, but otherwise only went in the pull-ups. I think it was a good foundation but we’ll try again in a few weeks.

Anyone around today?
Is anyone having luck getting under 5 vaccine appointments? My state DOH told me they expect to authorize vaccination to begin “at the end of this week or early next week” which is so frustrating — why do they need more than a week after the CDC ruling to make their own decision!? It’s not like they didn’t have time to prepare for this. I’m hearing the same thing from friends in other states, that the local vaccine infrastructure has basically been so dismantled at this point that there’s no one left to vaccinate the little kids. I can get an appointment tomorrow at a children’s hospital 4 hours away and am debating going, but this is bananas.
CCLA says
Over here in LA area, I see appointments at local Walgreens starting Saturday 6/25, but not CVS as of this morning. Walgreens in my area had only Pfizer (I do appreciate that they list which vaccine is available alongside the appt availability – we have decided that if it’s reasonably feasible, we want to try to find Moderna for our youngest). I called an independent pharmacy that a mom mentioned in our local fb group, and they are expecting both Pfizer and Moderna to come in late tomorrow, so I made a Weds appointment. They were super flexible and helpful on the phone – so I guess my rec is check local parent groups and/or call independent pharmacies!
Anon says
Yeah Walgreens let me book a Pfizer appointment online for Saturday (I think that’s a national policy) but when I called our local Walgreens, they said they probably wouldn’t have the vaccine by then and would have to bump us to next week. Something about our state not authorizing the orders early enough so the vaccine supply went to other states (no, I’m not in Florida). And I have a preference for Moderna too. Unfortunately no small pharmacies in my area vaccinate – just the big retail chains and the state run sites. I’m hoping our county health dept will have more info tomorrow. If they can’t tell me anything definite I’ll probably just do the 4 hour drive on Wednesday. Bleh.
Anon says
Agreed, Walgreens is the only one out of the major pharmacies to have anything up and running. CVS and Rite aid have nothing yet. Walgreens are mostly caring Pfizer with very few expectations (I found one with Moderna an hour away).
It ends up there’s a pediatrician about 50 minutes away who was on the ball and started pre-booking appointments last Wednesday. Since they are offering Moderna, I snatched an appointment for Friday. That way, if my kid has any side effects after dose 2, we’ll have the weekend.
Anonymous says
Nope, I’m also waiting for my state Dept. of Health Services to review CDC’s clinical guidance. My kid is <3, so Walgreens isn't an option. All local pediatricians and the local health department have to wait for the state DHS to update their own guidance before they can even schedule appointments. This is super frustrating.
EDAnon says
Here it is only Walgreens. Public Health still says it’s not authorized (maybe they’re waiting on the state?). The peds office was like “Lots of people are asking but we don’t know anything. Try public health.” I booked at Walgreens for next week.
Anon says
In Maryland, near DC, and there are quite a few options – Walgreens, many pediatricians offices, and a few independent pharmacies. DC is also doing city-run vaccine clinics. So glad to have reached this point!

Omg just wait a week.

I’m taking my four-year old on a flight for the first time ever next month. I’m really excited! But I also have no idea what to bring. The flight will be in the middle of the day and about 3 hours long. Any suggestions on airport security, IDs, whether I need some kind of special seat, and just things to general have / expect with a little kid?
Anon says
Airport security: It’s too late now, but I recommend TSA Precheck. Even if you don’t fly a ton it’s not a huge cost (something like $100 for 5 years) and very worth it.
ID: My kid has a passport we always bring, but I believe children under age 18 don’t need ID for domestic travel.
Seat: You won’t need any special seat for the plane itself. We are comfortable with a backless booster for rental car travel, so we just carry that on board and put it in underneath the seat in front of my kid, but I know it depends on size and behavior of your kid. If you bring a real carseast with you, your options are (in order of increasing risk of loss/damage and decreasing order of convenience) 1) use it on the plane, 2) gate check it, 3) regular check. All are free of charge.
For entertainment, we just use screens.
4 year olds honestly aren’t that little anymore ;) It’s so much easier than traveling with babies/toddlers. It will be fine!
NYCer says
If OP has TSA precheck, her 4 year old will be included (all kids under 12 are automatically included with parents).
Beyond that, OP go with unlimited screen time and snacks, and it will be fine!

I got a really nerdy fanny pack for traveling with kids and loved it. Front zip nicely stored my phone, our tickets, and my ID for quick reference; main part of the pack held wallet, masks, hand sanitizer, chapstick. It’s not huge, but definitely enough for the things I would normally have to keep digging out. My 4yo has gotten so much easier to travel with recently (no planes yet this year, but even last year at 3.5 he was pretty good). I’d get them as involved as possible, and depending on their abilities/interests of course. Maybe they can pack their own toys (you checking it of course) in their own backpack, packing own water bottle, and they can pull their own (small) suitcase. I’d just buy them their own seat. Bring sanitizing wipes for the plane seats/trays because kids just touch everythingggg. Bring some paper towels — every time we’ve had some kind of spill on a plane they hand you those little drink napkins, not very helpful. Before an airplane trip last summer we played “airplane” at home, pretending/practicing seat belts, putting your backpack under the seat, loud overhead announcements, escalators, etc. and that seemed to help. The Crayola Color Wonder kits are great for travel. Kid headphones for watching a show. And YMMV but for whatever reason, my kids love having their matching “travel pillows” and it seems to help them settle for bed quickly on vacation (nothing fancy, just a small, pretty flat pillow that doesn’t take up much room, got it from JoAnn fabrics). On a trip last year at 3.5, some new-to-him hand-me-down plastic animals entertained him for half the flight, so I’d bring some kind of “surprise” gift for the flight, but certainly nothing fancy. I do remember that, despite all the snacks I brought, still wishing I’d grabbed more in part because I got hungry myself! Hope some of this is helpful to your situation. Have fun!

Sanitizing wipes for the armrests, hands, etc., tons of snacks, empty bottle for water to fill past security, and a couple things for entertainment. My kiddo is six, and on planes we just let her have unlimited iPad time. It’s just so much easier and lighter than carrying around tons of activities. The last time we flew her backpack contained: water bottle, iPad, note pad, one coloring book, pencil bag with a handful of pencils/markers/crayons, one popper/fidget thing, her favorite little Anna/Elsa dolls, and a small stuffie for nighttime on vacation. Those were her activities for both the plane and the entire trip (about 3 days at a relative’s house). She had her own chap stick in the front pouch. I carried a gallon ziploc with tons of pre-packaged snacks in my backpack.

My 4 year old just wants her tablet on the plane. We stopped packing a big bag of toys and stuff a long time ago, probably around age 2. For international travel, we typically buy a couple new books that relate to the destination and surprise her with them on the the plane but that’s really more for us than her. She would be completely content with just the tablet.
