Another summer scheduling vent: our piano teacher apparently holds her studio’s recitals on Memorial Day. weekend. That’s odd, right? This year we’re missing it due to long-planned vacation but if my kid sticks with piano we’ll have to schedule around it and I know it’s a first world problem but I’m so disappointed because I love taking vacation the week of Memorial Day. 1) there are barely any camps that week, 2) we save a day of PTO and 3) it’s still kind of shoulder season in a lot of N. America and Europe, with lower prices and crowds.
Is there anyone else who finds middle aged social interactions unfulfilling?
I really enjoy my job and love talking work with colleagues. It’s super interesting. I love hanging with my kids and DH. We have a lot of fun.
But I really have not been enjoying general social gatherings with folks my age. I don’t have any patience for small talk, do not enjoy the semi competitive conversations about kid sports/academics, vacations comparisons, aging parent vents, or endless mulling of grooming and perimenopause. World affairs at the moment are insanely stressful and not fun to debate. Ugh. Maybe I need other topics? Idk.
I am not working this summer and considering keeping my boys at home with me (5 and 3) instead of daycare. It would be for two months. I’d probably get a sitter for a few hrs 2x a week so I can go to my appointments and have some down time. The idea was for me to spend more time with them before my oldest goes to K.
Is this a terrible idea? I can’t decide if this is fueled by mom guilt or what and need some input.
For the poster yesterday – my husband had a similarly ‘out of his control’ schedule for a very long time. My answer from experience is that yes, you can be annoyed but also yes, it really is almost totally out of his control. We had too many last minute misses of holidays, birthdays, funerals, performances… all of it. A lot of weddings where you have to RSVP ‘Uh, we’ll try?’.
You’re always welcome to vent on here but get ready for (in real life and on here) everyone to tell you how awful your spouse is. Which, some days, you kinda need to hear! Long-term, there are a lot of benefits but the day to day is really rugged, especially on the ‘at home’ spouse.
