Call me stuck in 2012, but I must say, I still love the combo of gray and neon yellow. I think it’s a flattering combination that, particularly in a structured piece like a blazer, lends an easy breath of color to an outfit. Here’s a suggestion: wear the blazer with a black dress and throw on a cobalt accent, either with your shoes or a necklace. The blazer is $188 at Nordstrom. Has anyone used/hired (not sure the right term) an au pair? We are seriously considering asking an au pair to join us for a year. We have the private bedroom and need childcare for 40 hours per week, and currently have a nanny. We are thinking we will need to lease a car, add the au pair to our insurance and obtain a cell phone for her. Any insight into hidden costs, companies, tips or lessons learned? Thank you!!

If you enter this string into google (substituting the appropriate letters in for the ! and &), you’ll be able to find a number of past comments from TBK about having an au pair: “s!te:corpor&ttemoms.com ‘au pair'”. I know someone asked a few weeks ago about the hidden costs of an au pair. Hope that helps!

Paging TBK: Thank you for all you have written about au pairs!! It has been so helpful and informative. You mentioned living in a smaller space: does your au pair have her own bathroom or do you or the kids share? Our au pair’s bedroom will be on a separate floor from the other bedrooms with a half-bath close by (that we envision treating as her bathroom) but for a shower, she will need to come up to the main bathroom. I’m envisioning a bit of awkwardness around this? Also, any tips for screening or discussing your family needs/style? How much assistance was your agency in finding a good fit?

Just posted a long reply on the main s!te that seems to have gotten eaten by moderation. She “shares” with the kids, but since our kids are under 2 and still in diapers that currently just means that I go in there to give them baths on the weekends. I think the showering kind of depends on her schedule and her culture. Our au pair showers at night, which I think is more common in her culture, so she’s in the shower while I’m cooking dinner and my husband hasn’t come home from work yet. If the kids are in school part of the day, or nap (and you’re okay with her being in the shower with a baby monitor nearby) she might choose to shower then.

Any of you who have successfully pumped while driving: teach me your ways! I have an hour commute and park in an open surface lot. TIA and happy new year!

I can’t get into a lot of details today, but I know I’ve posted about it here before or at the main s!te. In a nutshell:
-setup at home/in parking lot, don’t fuss with it while driving beyond turning it off
-get super comfortable with pumping at home before trying it in the car
-handsfree bra is a bare minimum requirement, Freemies are even better
-drape yourself with a backwards fleece, blanket or cardigan if you are driving with your shirt hiked up
-a towel in your lap is an excellent idea in case of drips and spills
-nursing tank is good to keep your stomach warm.
-the power supply that plugs into your car (I was going to call it a cigarette lighter, but I guess it isn’t called that anymore) is significantly more powerful than batteries for many pumps, so use that if possible
-if you need to stop the pump immediately, just yank the charger out of the socket, you can mess with everything else once you are safely parked.
-just turn off the pump and stay hooked up once you are done, you can pack everything up once you get to the parking lot
-if you have a choice, park toward the back corner of the parking lot away from where coworkers might walk in front of you
-have a spare shirt in your car, and/or jacket in your car and spare shirt in your office in case of spills. Actually, entire spare outfit in your office is never a bad idea, in case you spill milk or your lunch on your pants when pumping or discover there is spitup down the back of your shoulder once you get to work (all happened to me)
-when you get to work, just wipe all the parts with a paper towel and stick in a ziploc in your cooler along with milk until your next pumping session – no need to wash.
-if you live anywhere where it is below freezing outside, you may want to rethink pumping during your commute until spring – it’s cold to have your shirt hiked up and/or jacket open when it’s so miserable out
Also good advice here re: pumping and driving, and probably other places on the mom’s s!te as well:

I use a nursing drape to cover myself – mine is big enough to allow me to do all my maneuvering underneath without exposing anything. Before I start the car, I make sure that my pump is within reach so that I can turn it off safely. I wear dark colored bottoms and have a towel handy (one of the commenters here suggested the towel). I keep hand sanitizer in my pump bag or car to use before I disassemble myself. I don’t put on my blouse or sweater until I have arrived at my destination and packed up everything.

Hi all. My 23-month-old DD spent all weekend tantruming. Everything was a tantrum! Please tell me this too shall pass!
Spirograph says
It will pass. But then it will come back. Sorry! Commiseration here, though… My almost-3-year-old spent a good chunk of the weekend tantruming, too. He had been great until mid-December. I am trying to figure out what the X-factor is, but I’m starting to think it’s just time (although schedule disruption during the holidays certainly didn’t help.)

Travel question: we are going to the Dominican Republic at the end of February with my 6 month old (will be almost 8 months then). I will ask the ped about vaccines etc but does anyone else have any experience?
