After a long hot summer, I’m ready for some fall florals.

I always check Boden first when I’m in the mood for bold, unique prints. This dress is filled with golden blooms grounded on a navy background. The midi-length dress is made from easy-care, wrinkle-resistant ponte fabric. The short puff sleeves are a fun, summery detail.

Once the weather cools, add a jacket and tights.

Boden’s Puff-Sleeve Ponte Shirtdress is $190 and comes in sizes 0 to 20/22 as well as petite and long.

How do you handle what I would call performative crying? My rising 2nd grader is falling apart at every little thing these days. I think it started because he was exhausted after sports camps and didn’t have the emotional capacity to handle disappointment/ frustration. But it’s become a pattern. Just last night he broke down in tears because he hated what I made for dinner and then again when I told him we didn’t have time for a second bedtime book. It feels like he’s wailing to get his way. I’ve been pretty low-sympathy in these situations, and have told him he’s too old (nearly 8!) to be crying about pasta. I’ve also tried to explain that it’s okay to cry in other situations. But we can’t seem to break the cycle. Has anything worked for you? And am I being too harsh?

An activity for my high schooler is already back in session even though school doesn’t begin until next week. Last night, he came home from said activity in a terrible mood and looking to pick a fight with everyone in the house. Even though he said the activity went great. It’s just our family and everything we do to p ! s s him off that’s the problem. I just love these seasonal transitions! /s

I’m trying to give him some grace, but it was a rough night.

Repeat post from two days ago in hopes to gain more visibility. Does anyone have experience with the Skylight calendars? I’m particularly interested in their meal planning app that comes with the subscription. We only have one kiddo, but there are a lot of overlapping activities and events even in a household of three.

We have three week days off (August 20, 21, and 24) between when summer camps end and when school starts, and I don’t have childcare set up for those days yet. Last year I took off work and we did some fun outings. This year I was planning to do the same, but my work has been ramping up and I have some intense project deadlines right around then. DH can help some but he can’t take all three days off of work. What do you think we should do? There are a few babysitters we could ask. Or DH and I could split the time and work from home. I could just put my foot down at work and take the PTO, and hopefully everyone can deal. But I’m feeling guilty about it. I have bigger negative feelings wrapped up in this project anyway and I’m trying to separate those from the practical decision.

WWYD? I’ve been feeling burned out lately. Busy job, lots of solo parenting, one of my two year old twins doesn’t sleep much so I’m tired, endless house chores, etc.

My husband is off the whole last week of August, but I’m not. He’s offered to stay home with the kids (they’re off daycare three days that week too) while I go to my mom’s house an hour away for two days. I can work remotely while I’m there.
His mom and sister will be around to help him out while I’m gone.

On the one hand, I would like a break from the kids, but on the other hand I feel guilty.

Would you go?

I didn’t have to parent during the pandemic, but I’m pandemic parenting now! Daycare has been closed for air quality 10 of the last 13 days, and they only make the call a few hours at a time.

My employer is being incredibly understanding, no complaints about them. But I’m starting to freak out feeling like everything is falling apart. And at the same time, how am I so unproductive with all this extra time?

Could those who went through this before give me some moral support?

back to school logistical question! my son is starting 5th grade and I plan to let him start walking to and fro school by himself this year and giving him a house key (for context we live in NYC). but sometimes he goes to a friend’s house after school or to shoot hoops or whatever, and I’d want to know where he is. But, I don’t want to give him a phone/watch yet. Anyone come up with a good system for this? required to come home and check in first? creative ideas I haven’t thought up?

Different bedtime question. For those of you with older kids, when and how did the switch happen, if it did, from putting them to bed to you going to bed first? Last night, I was effectively ready for bed at 8:30. My late elementary schoolers have been staying up until closer to 10. We reviewed what happens at bedtime (lights off, dog crated, etc), I set a timer to remind them to head upstairs at 9:15, and I went to bed. It was great. I believe they followed instructions, and I got my sleep. I also feel bad, like I’m ending the bedtime traditions of having young kids.

Holy crap. I cannot imagine a 6:30 bedtime. During the day care years, that’s around when we were getting home!

My oldest is going to be starting kindergarten in a year. My kids (including future K’er) go to bed at 6:30 PM and have since they were basically 6 months old. This timing works well with our daycare schedule and their sleep needs, but I’m realizing that might be too tough a bedtime to pull off in elementary school. The elementary day ends earlier than daycare, but should I expect that K kid will have evening activities or need that time for worksheets or other things? I know their sleep needs may change a lot in the next year regardless of any active effort from us. But we’ve tried in the past to move this kid even back to a 7 PM bedtime (and have thought they were ready in the past!) and it has been a hot mess every time so just trying to be realistic on working towards what we might need over a long timeline if needed.

Just want to put in a plug for the micro-adventure on the weekend or in the evenings – we can’t afford a real vacation this year (bought a townhouse/have zero PTO) but getting out for a beach day 1.5 hours away made it feel like summer. The memory of my toddler’s delight when the waves hit his feet will stay with me forever. It’s sometimes tempting to say the traffic or the hassle isn’t worth it but the payoff for modest outings can be surprisingly large!
