Winter has not been kind to my hair. Post-shower, I spritz in a light leave-in conditioner like this one to restore lustre and minimize breakage.
This leave-in conditioner from TRESemmé hydrates, detangles, and controls frizz for a smooth finish without weighing hair down. The lightweight formula leaves hair soft and ready to style — just add your favorite heat protectant.
This TRESemmé conditioner is $5.99 at Target.

May repost tomorrow because it’s late, but for those of you who’ve dealt with a bullying sort of situation, how do you handle it without making it worse for the bullied kid? I feel like bullies feed on the reaction so I fear that escalating it to the teacher is just going to make things worse for my kid. But I feel like something needs to be done at this point. Early elementary age.
My 4 year old is going to have two fillings and a crown in the back of their mouth! I’m so shocked and kind of embarrassed – we don’t really do juice or lots of sweets (nor does he have a sweet tooth). I literally never had cavities until after I had my first kid. And he’s also been extra….spicy…lately which may also be because he’s in pain. SMH.
Anyone been through this before with small(er) kids? Please advise what it’s like/what to prep for. I know it’s all pretty standard, but looking for some others with this experience.
We have a birthday party soon where we’re supposed to bring homemade gifts. I think a card would probably be fine, but my daughter is very close to the birthday child and wants to do more than that. I bought one of those paint-your-own mugs at Michael’s and was going to have my daughter paint it, which I feel like fulfills the spirit of the request even though technically I bought the mug and paint. Any suggestions for some small homemade(ish) things we could put inside the mug? Not expensive or time-consuming, I’m thinking something like candy but whatever the homemade equivalent of that, just as another fun little surprise. The kid is turning 8.
reposting…Q for those with employer-based childcare.
Our plan has been to put 1 y/o at my employer’s center since 5 y/o is heading to K in August. We’ve made the decision to switch him out starting next month (why? he’s in a big room with 15 kids, and a b*tchy teacher saying things like ‘i hope he doesn’t act like his older brother’ and chiding him on whether he’s going to be a crier at dropoff) while 5 y/o finishes out at current center.
So, if you use employer-based childcare, how do you handle remote work/sick days for you; and vice versa, sick days for LO. It’s about a 30 min drive from home and my role tends to be external with meetings/etc around town. thanks, hive!

Can you all talk to me about what you do if you are about to have a “fight” in front of your child? By fight, I mean a stern and polite discussion about something, like scheduling or something. This is just an example – we do not fight over scheduling. What we do is stop ourselves and talk about it later. I am struggling with whether this is the right choice? Is it better to have a polite but “fighty” conversation that ends in nice words and hugs in front of a child? I think I feel more comfortable doing it in private. What do you all do? We have a toddler.
How much would you push band and orchestra? Neither DH nor I ever played a musical instrument or had any music education beyond elementary school music class. I sort of regret it, he very much does not. The time has come to decide if our third grader will start band and/or orchestra next year. You can join with no previous musical experience. They meet during the school day (alternating days) during a designated period. If you don’t go to band then you have a study hall. Our kid is doing very well in school and homework is still pretty minimal, so she doesn’t need a study hall. I think we should strongly encourage or even require one of band and orchestra at least for next year. If she hates it, then I’d be open to her quitting but I want her to at least try it. DH thinks it should be entirely up to her. Most of her friends are doing band or orchestra, some are doing both. But they’ve also mostly been taking private music lessons for years so I think part of her hesitation about it stems from that.
Another lunchbox question–how do you pack daycare lunch for a baby? My older kids’ daycare served lunch, so we never packed anything until they were 3 and in preschool, at which point we used Bentgo Kids boxes. Trying to avoid buying more plastic, so are Lunchbots (small or medium?) the way to go?
We may not be able to find wraparound care for afterchool for the upcoming school year (the waitlist got very long). My kids will be in 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades. Tips from those who have managed this situation before? I work remote and have some flexibility but there will be days when I won’t be able to do much. It’s basically the timeframe from 3:30-5pm. My 10 year old is very responsible. The 6 year old likes more engagement. The soon to be 8 year old is also pretty self sufficient.
A positive Monday outcome – I was dreading my husband’s nephew visiting as I spend all week with college students and didn’t particularly want one in my home, but it’s been lovely! He’s a great kid, my 7 year old is obsessed with him. And the real bonus – he got tired of my son’s piano repertoire (chopsticks… just chopsticks) so has resolved to teach him a new song every day. He can now play a passable version of Yellow Submarine and I think Hey Jude is next.
Warning, excessive detail about lunchboxes to follow…
I know people ask a lot about lunchboxes on here…for years we were loyal plastic Bentgo users but after one of them broke for the fourth time last year I switched to stainless steel. And now, after a year of having both Planetbox stainless steel lunchboxes (the big kids) and Lunchbots stainless steel lunchboxes (the adults and the toddler) I can officially say I like Lunchbots better.
Good things about the Lunchbots: Lunchbots is a bit cheaper ($39 as opposed to $50) and fits inside a standard sized insulated lunchbox. Planetboxes are heavier and need their own specially-sized insulated lunchbox that you have to buy from them, and I find that an extremely annoying money-grab. The little containers that go inside (for dips, etc) are slightly cheaper from Lunchbots. I also like that there are more compartments in the Lunchbots (we have the “large cinco” for the toddler and it has 5, compared to 4 on the Planetbox).
Good things about the Planetbox: the compartments are separated from each other really well, so you won’t have any leakage between compartments. There is also a compartment that fits a cheese stick, which the cinco doesn’t have (tho if you get the 3-compartment Lunchbots then a cheese stick does fit). And the Planetbox lid is attached on a hinge, so less likely to get lost (tho my kids say it’s annoying that it takes up so much room on the table).
Finally, a plug for the “small protein packer” Lunchbots for adults. I use it when I have to eat breakfast at work and it is the perfect size for a hard-boiled egg, veggies and hummus, and crackers. I feel so accomplished and healthy when I use it.
Any recommendations for a baby sunscreen that’s as non-toxic (and unscented) as possible? Daycare requires it and I need to get something soon!
I’m completing my post bacc to become a teacher after a decade in a different career. Will be teaching middle school social studies. Out of curiosity – what do you like about your kids’ education? What do you dislike about it? What’s good and what could be improved?
The tooth fairy forgot to visit our house last night and all h*ll broke loose this morning….fortunately when kids were downstairs eating breakfast i managed to find the note and $ left by the tooth fairy, but omg the pressure of being the magic maker in the family!
