Some of the articles of interest to working mothers that we’ve seen around the web recently…
- The Boston Globe reports that — with kids spending so much time indoors — pediatricians have been writing prescriptions for active time outside.
- Kate Tuttle, writing for Dame Magazine, talks about being an “accidental housewife” and a feminist.
- Renegade Mothering has a set of guidelines for drama-free mom relationships, including: “I understand that ‘on time’ means ‘not as late as I usually am.'”
- USA Today shares some apps and websites that can help keep kids’ brains in learning mode this summer [warning: auto-play video above article].
- Ever see a film and think something along the lines of, “[Actress] is way too young to be playing mom to [actress of similar age]”? Vulture has gathered several examples of the impossibly-young movie mom.
- Nostalgia time! Remember Raffi? Of course you remember Raffi (even if you don’t want to). “Baby Beluga”? “Down By the Bay”? Raffi talks about his new children’s album in this interview with NPR (in which he barks like a dog and namechecks Tom Waits).

Raffi! I have been playing his music for my 3 month old since she was born. I hope someday she loves him as much as I did when I was a kid.
Does anyone have any suggestions for kid-friendly music that won’t drive parents nuts? So far, in addition to Raffi, I have played her Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, and Sesame Street songs from musician guest stars like R.E.M. singing “Furry Happy Monsters.”

Yes! One strategy is trying bands/artists who originally made music for adults, like Laurie Berkner (http://youtu.be/tQVNX4L2aRo), Dan Zanes (http://youtu.be/ed1eVHmck88), and They Might Be Giants (http://youtu.be/vs_D8dC0uwc). Will see if I can think of some more.
There’s these too, which I think I will check out: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/family/2011/11/good_hip_hops_songs_for_kids_a_list_.single.html

How do you all share photos of your little one with family members scattered around the country? Personally, I am dealing with a group of people who are not terribly tech savvy, some of whom use iPhones and some of whom use Android phones. I set up a Flickr group, but relatives have been having trouble joining, I think because a lot of them set up a Yahoo ID long ago, can’t remember the log-in information, etc. Does anyone use something else that works well?

I swear by my Smugmug website. I also use it as backup storage for all my photos, should my hard drive ever go kaput. I love the personalization, the difference privacy options, the easy publishing to Facebook, and that my family can buy prints of whatever I have online. I also think the print quality is much better than Shutterfly (which I used to use).

My android let me set up a group of phone #s and email addresses and I send the “picture of the day” to all 4 grandparents and uncle… Not tech savvy at all but super easy for everyone

FYI Kat – something is going on with the number of comments. I am seeing “No Comments” on all the posts, both on their individual post pages and on the main page. As this page was loading, I saw “5 Comments” but once it was complete loading it was back to “No Comments”
Using Chrome for Android, in case it matters.
