Some of the articles of interest to working mothers that we’ve seen around the web recently…

  • ProPublica created a guide for those experiencing pregnancy loss in states with abortion bans, to help them know what to expect and how to advocate for themselves.
  • The Marshall Project shared the stories of pregnant women who were given routine medications during childbirth, such as morphine, and later reported to child welfare authorities for positive drug tests.
  • The Washington Post [gift link] observed that “many doulas, midwifes, nurses and obstetricians are explicitly preparing Black women to speak up loudly for themselves in the delivery room.” Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as white women.
  • AP News reported that a new report from the Pew Research Center indicated that half of American teenagers say they are online “constantly” — and the most popular platform is YouTube.
  • Meanwhile, The Cut answered a reader’s question about how to make sure her 9-year-old uses YouTube safely.
  • ProPublica reported that UnitedHealth is “aggressively targeting the treatment of thousands of children with autism across the country in an effort to cut costs.” (Note: The treatment, applied behavior analysis (ABA) is controversial, and many autistic adults say it is traumatic.)
  • Disability Scoop noted that University of New Orleans researchers are using machine learning to analyze the behavioral patterns of autistic kids — to ultimately help kids and parents.
  • Bloomberg shared that Ulta is selling mystery balls containing tiny replicas (not actually usable) of some of the company’s most popular products, including butt polish and wake-up eye gel — and young girls are “obsessed.”
  • Your Laugh of the Week comes from Points in Case, with “A Nonjudgmental and Nonthreatening Pediatric Dental Questionnaire.”
